One News Poll

May 30th, 2010 at 6:30 pm by David Farrar

I’ve blogged at Curiablog, the results of the One News Colmar Brunton Poll.

National is below 50% for the first time, but none of the 5% drop went to Labour.

There’s a lot of lives issues at the moment – budget, mining, ETS, Kiwibank talk etc. I suspect some are pushing support one way, and some the other.

National’s loss is the gain of the party with their hand out for more (Maori), and the party with their hand on our freedom (Greens). NZ really is a basketcase.

ACT might as well fold their tent. Haven’t even got as much support as NZF with Winston dead and buried years ago. You’re just not resonating guys, when you should be. Something is very wrong there and it don’t look like its ever going to be fixed.

The Greens seems to been the main beneficeries of the Nats vacillation on mining issues. And I do not see the Govt. getting any credit for pushing the ETS scheme. While the imposition of the ETS tax may seem worthy to a few it does not go far enough for the Greens and too far for the moderates. Labour is leaving this well alone, knowing that this could well be the petard on which Nick Smith hoists the Govt.

No wonder the Labour Party are so bloody angry – Mr Irrelevant is now close to the margin of error on 6% support in preferred PM stakes – can it get worse – hell I am sure Billy English rated much higher than that.

Is there anything that Labour have not tried that might work? (like new exciting policy rather than a Cullen rerun?)

I expect a drop for Labour (and rise for the Nats ) in the next set of polling on the back of Mr Irrelevant and Gollum doing what they can to destroy Jon Key (H-fee 3 coming up?)

This is only going to get worse for the Nat’s, this poll will not include the effects of the ETS yet, just wait until we are all forking out more and more for no reason at all, the Nat’s popularity will drop like a stone.

They (the Nat’s) are lucky that Labour are in such a mess, it is a pity really as NZ needs a strong opposition and one that would force Key and the rest of the National Socialists back to the right.

That’s a bad result for National. Really bad, actually.

They’ve just played the government’s trump card. The budget was the Ace, the winner. There won’t be a bigger one this year.

National will have the numbers in 2011, as long as the opposition is weak. But relying on Labour failure is not exactly an inspiring re-election strategy.

    What else have they got?

ACT have set themselves up as economically radical but socially conservative. Who does that appeal to? Maybe the old and rich — but that’s a pretty small voting base.

If they dropped the social conservatism, they could start appealing to young voters. There’s a lot of people in uni, or recently out of it, that like the social views of, say, the Greens, but not their trade and taxation policies. ACT could pick up those votes — if they were willing to be a bit more open-minded.

National are still looking good to be in government but its looking much more likely that ACT won’t be in the coalition. When ACT + Nat gets below 61- then they will need Maori Party support to pass everything. If they get to the point where MP + Nat is below 61 then it really gets difficult for Key. Seems like the Greens are gaining ground in every country at the moment. They will likely hold the balance of power in the Australian Senate by the end of this year.

ACT may need a fresh blooding in the ranks….arise the David Seymours,Mike Collins’s Peter Macaffery’s,Helen Simpson’s et el who can put ACT on an even keel in both the social and economic spheres…

I remember the almost unanimous opinion of commentators and media that ACT wouldn’t survive the last election – just remind me how much a bet of $100 that Act would return with multiple MPs would have enriched me? The ETS like the smacking legislation, is and will continue to disaffect some National voters as will economic progress that improves certainty and some tangible or at least hope of a tangible benefit. Presently the jury is out and polls are like overheard excerpts of comments from the jury room which may be relevant to some degree, however Key would be wise to reflect on the benefits of possibly being right on ets but out of office against being wrong and in office, or even explaining to taxpayers the reasons in detail why an ETS is a good thing when it appears virtually nobody else is choosing his route. If you cannot convince electors they will eventually remove you – as NZ and the UK have already demonstrated that government are thrown out not elected – electors in Europe, the States and Japan also appear to leaning this way and the Senate elections will give Obama a signal which he will ignore at his peril.First term most governments are to some extent learning how/when to act so it is a waste if they do not have a second term in which to utilize skills acquired.
