Carrying over a controversy from yesterday’s GD, where a commentator drew on a link to huff and puff about the whole Sharrod-NAACP-Obama-Breitbart storm. The link was this one:

Jonathan Chait – Journolist member. Purpose of the Journolist club – allow left-wing reporters to discuss amongst themselves which stories should be covered and which should not, what narratives should be pursued and which should be ignored as not important (to them that is), as well as coordinating attack lines on the right-wing. As a result, and surely to no one’s great surprise, Breitbart is described in the following terms:

Arguably more outrageous is that, even having been exposed as either a total scumbag or a fool, he will almost certainly suffer no serious or lasting repercussions.

Surely no more outrageous than being exposed as a member of the Journolist and having had all the pathetic little plottings and “thoughts” exposed to daylight.

Jonathan Chait, whom I used to read with a modicum of respect even as I disagreed with his arguments – zero credibility.

Moreover, his association with and active participation in, Journolist, does not seem to have made him suffer any serious or lasting repercussions. After all, he’s still being quoted by people around the world, even in NZ, as if his opinion and argument still count.

This is just more of the same method from Chait and his cohorts: hammer away at what is “the real story”, and ignore the one they don’t want to know about – the callous incompetence of the Obama administration and the racism of the NAACP applauding the part of Sharrod’s speech where she described her initial desire to stick it to a “superior” white man.

It was the Obama Whitehouse that put the pressure on to get Sharrod fired. It was they who openly told her that she was going to become a “Glenn Beck Special” – even when it turns out that Beck went in the opposite direction and objected to the woman being fired.

It was the NAACP who dumped on her, even while they had in their possession the whole tape that they could have reviewed. They dumped on her in order to divert attention away from their own racism, which Breitbart had exposed as part of the counter-attack for their silly racism resolution on the Tea Party movement.

Chait, as expected, is more than happy to let all that slide because the important thing here is to destroy Breitbart, who has gained more than a few scoops that have embarrassed the left – notably all the lies about racial epithets being flung at members of Congress during the Obamacare vote – a story Chait, like most of the rest of the MSM, ignored.

Sharrod I’m sure, will play her part by going after Breitbart rather than the NAACP or Obama: she’ll be able to play the role of race warrior in way she realised she could not in the case of the “poor white farmer”. Her initial racism superseded by class warfare – and I’m supposed to be impressed by this morphing?

How about this take from the WSJ’s James Taranto:

It is entirely fair to observe that Breitbart’s Monday report on Sherrod was journalistically shoddy. He misinterpreted a quote whose meaning was at best ambiguous. He should have sought out the full speech (the NAACP has posted it here), and he should have given Sherrod an opportunity to comment.

But the NAACP’s defense that it was “snookered” by Breitbart–and [David] Frum’s implication, in turn, that Breitbart is the only “villain” of the piece–is laughable. Are we to believe that Ben Jealous thought Breitbart was what Dan Rather, before his fall, claimed to be–an impartial and reliable purveyor of facts? In the unlikely event that the answer to that question is yes, doesn’t his failure to know better reflect a stunning incompetence?

No, you can’t cheat an honest man. Breitbart set a trap for the NAACP, and the NAACP walked right into it. He was able to do so because he correctly identified the organization’s moral weakness. Confronted by a video showing apparent racism at an NAACP function, its leaders appear to have panicked and made a snap decision to denounce one of their own so as to pre-empt the charge of employing a double standard.

It was a very effective bit of Alinskyite political theater, and in a way more so for Breitbart’s having gotten the story wrong. As it turned out, the NAACP condemned Shirley Sherrod based on a false, secondhand accusation of racism. Members of the Tea Party movement know just how she feels.

The whole story is rich with irony – no more so than when Chait bangs the drums about journalistic credibility, accountability and the consequences suffered when those are breached.

There are some interesting jurisprudential tensions in this. On the one hand, the judge is an individual fighting for his career and who, in the ordinary course of events, could be expected to make whatever tactical moves he considers appropriate. On the other hand, given that the issue goes to the core of judicial integrity, should a judge be seen to be manoeuvring in the background in order to limit the number of people who are eligible to comment on his situation and make submissions on his ability to continue? I would have thought that at the very least, the party aggrieved in the proceedings over which the judge presided should be entitled to present an argument. I would like to see Sir Ted Thomas there as well if only because you can count on him to present a challenging and incisive viewpoint.

Can you imagine the outcry if a man got home detention for having oral sex with two girls aged 10 and 12? I would support the outcry but the only way will the will be an outcry over this is if someone like me pushes it which I think I will.

I know some of the lunatic fridge of the libertarians will call me and homophobe and worse. However, this is not unique and happens far too often. It okay to say Maori are disproportionately represented when it comes to crime and one is not called a racist. However, when someone points out the fact that homosexuals are disproportionately represented when it comes sexual abuse of adolescents that are accused being a homophobe. These know all libertarians who push this line while ignore the statistics are helping scum like the one in the article to operate longer.

Why was he not charged with an offence he admitted and would qualify him for a first strike?

Police were called to the home of a former school teacher where a 12-year-old boy was seen doing chores – days before the man was sentenced for sexually grooming two boys.

Concerned neighbours called police to report that the boy was helping Michael James Dobbyn load firewood at his property.

But they watched the boy flee, running up the street minutes before police arrived.

The offending progressed to Dobbyn performing oral sex on them and although he admitted this, the charges relating to it were dropped.

a legacy of labour and its spending/bribing policies and education and media systems that do nothing to educate voters on realities of econimics.

Fathers get a harder time than this when they are FALSELY accused of interfering with their own daughters.

The fact that Dobbyn is a former school teacher, and is presumably unmarried (no mention of a wife), begs the question of whether he interfered with boys while in his role as a teacher. And also whether he has had previous homosexual liasons with adult men?

One gets that creeping suspicion we’re not being told the full story regarding Dobbyn’s earlier life and possible abuses.

That the system panders to the homosexual lobby is beyond question – this is just yet more evidence of that fact.
If I had my way this bastard would be strung up!!!

Read what a senior Westpac banker writes in the link below. “Get used to foreign investors,” says David McLean, Westpac’s general manager of wealth, insurance, private and institutional banking.

The banks have been pipelining in foreign capital from Japanese and other foreign investors for years. This has propped up the Kiwi dollar, hurting export industries, and provided fuel for the property bubble, with its disastrous consequence for NZ investors.

Then our toadying MSM endlessly quotes the banks’ NZ economists to tell us this is all inevitable.

McLean in the article mentions “Sinlait” (sic). Yet there is a swelling controversy about the investment by China’s Bright Dairy and Food Co’s $82m buy into the a wholly owned subsidary of Synlait Ltd, the southern milk processor. Some Synlait shareholders are in uproar because Synlait management sold the stake, which is actually in a Synlait subsidiary, Synlait, without getting approval of their own shareholders. They were able to do this because directors can apparently make such major decisions without reference to shareholders when the decision is about a subsidiary.

We need banks, but we don’t to have accept them lecturing us on what to think. I like this quote from Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States.

Banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies.

And Mark Twain’s:

A banker is a fellow who lends his umbrella when the sun is shining and wants it back the minute it begins to rain.

Further to my 1.24 post:

Brian Gaynor has an interesting piece in today’s NZ Hooerald about why so much of country’s assets are being sold off overseas.

One point he makes is that the Kiwisaver funds are overwhelmingly being poured overseas rather than invested in NZ.

Another of example this he doesn’t mention are the funds of the community trusts set up after the burying of NZ’s savings banks. These banks were small, local, and for most of their life, government guaranteed. They didn’t make big profit but provided jobs, especially in regional centres, and gave a flow of donations to the community. When they were merged into a national bank (except for what became Taranki-based TSB), the capital value was put in regional community trusts that distribute some of their profit to local charities. Unfortunately, the hundreds of millions of dollars in these trusts are overwhelmingly invested overseas. They don’t create NZ business or NZ jobs, and the national bank set up (Countrywide?) has long since disappeared.

The link below is to Gaynor’s article, which overall makes depressing reading, as he seems to suggest current sellout to foreigners is inevitable.

Perhaps we need a revolution.

Jack5 try engaging your brain before posting. Why do we have Kiwisaver ? So we can meet the cost of retirement without massive borrowing. Why do Kiwisaver funds invest overseas ? They invest where the profit is greatest, which happens to be mostly overseas. If they thought they could make as much profit investing in new zealand, they would. You would apparently prefer for them to invest for less profit in new zealand investments. So where does the money for retirement come from now ? Funny how the left’s solution for too much borrowing is usually to borrow even more…

I think the reason for Kiwisaver funds going overseas isn’t so much the profits are greater there. Like the community trusts many must have taken knocks from falls in overseas markets, though they might do well if they bought oversas now while the NZD is high and dump these holdings when the kiwi falls.

IMHO, the funds are going overseas because of the decisions of fund managers, and these guys aren’t all that smart or they would have a Hawaiian holiday home like John Kee and be in Parliament. Some of them are the same types who put NZ investors into the financial company clunkers. Some are clones of people who ran NZ financial companies into the ground.

PIA, if the managers in the NZ funds industry are so smart, please explain this. The NZ fund managers put their money overseas when foreign investors see the opportunities in NZ forests, food processing, etc. From track records, who are the brighter? The overseas industrialists and investors from countries that are surging ahead, or the NZ financial set, often ex insurance salesmen, who were at the centre of the finance-company bubble? Can the NZ fund managers not see the NZ opportunities because they are thick, or is there some other constraint.

And this is hardly a fully independent funds flow. The Government subsidised Kiwisaver early, and the IRD provides the collection mechanism.

Here’s a concrete example of why I think the problem may lie in NZ fund managers rather than in opportunities overseas. South Canterbury Finance for years was a rock solid enterprise. Then in come execs from the NZ banking-finance and SCF is caught up in the property bubble popping. The group seems even to have lent money to Dave Henderson, the Christchurch property guy who was the main sponsor of ACT in Christchurch and was a great mate of Rodney Hide.

PIA, I’m not a leftist, as you suggest. The Right doesn’t begin or end at ACT and the fanatical Ayn Rand.

We are all stuffed. The next depression is here and it is already baked into the cake. The 2008 credit crunch was the first taste of what is to come. There is just too many assets in the world propped up with IOU’s. This is not going to be easy, and those with cash when it is all over will make a killing.

Does anyone know the ratio of overseas:domestic?

Does anyone else think that this ratio should be set by Parliament and not by the fund managers and if such is indeed already happening, is that ratio currently being applied and if so, are the politicians mental?

Our capital markets really stink. There’s lots of evidence. Many have been saying this for a very long time and no-one official ever does anything let alone acknowledge we have a problem. So are our best economic minds just really thick or what’s the story? Have we mistakenly employed the AAA+ Village Idiot variety of economic Mandarins?

Jack please keep trying to be clever, it’s actually quite amusing. First off, an argumentum ad hominem is when you point out something wrong with the person making the argument and claim that therefore the argument can be discounted, which is a logical fallacy. You’ll notice that I just said you should try engaging your brain before coming up with an argument, and then I dealt with your argument. At no point did I say your point must be wrong because you’re a bit thick, your point is wrong on its own terms.

Your comments on ad hominem parallel part of the entry in Wikipedia. I would have acknowledged the source if I had used it.

Here’s another definition of ad hominem fallacy, from Stephen Barker’s The Elements of Logic, an excellent primer on logic I recommend. Barker classes ad hominem as one of the fallacies of irrelevance (ignoratio enchi). Barker writes:

An argument is ad hominem (Latin:”to the man”) if it is directed at an opponent in a controversy, rather than being directly relevant to proving the conclusion under discussion

Put It Away, you started your post …try engaging your brain before posting… This is surely directing argument at me rather that at points I raised.

I’m not interested in swapping insults, when there’s an important issue at stake. However, if you want to debate Kiwisaver and foreign investment that’s fine.

In the meantime, don’t swallow the crap from Ayn Rand novels.

The USD IMO is permanently screwed. Nothing is backing it. Meanwhile, the US foreign policy continues to motivate and encourage those who want to shift the reserve currency to something else.

China and Japan between them have enough T-bills to tank the USD anytime they want to, and since the US off-shored its manufacturing base to China and India, guess what, they can’t get out of it.

IMO, what keeps the US going right now is the quaint tradition that it used to be the most powerful economy in the world, and the fortunate lack so far of a universally agreed successor.

I agree with much of what you say, but I think China has the problem with America’s economy rather than vice-versa.

Remember the old adage, you owe the bank 10,000 you’ve got a problem. You owe the bank 10 million, the bank’s got the problem.

How is the world going to get out of this pickle? And look out for the political and social upheavals that come from diving economies. Think of what the Versaille-imposed economic collapse in Germany after World War 1 led to.

I think America’s strength still lies in its resilience, creativity (computers, internet etc as examples) and its legal and economic framework. Once it stops squandering its wealth on military expeditions abroad it will recover, or at least recover somewhat.

China has its problems too. How it can cut back on growth, even retrench periodically, Western style, will be interesting given the hundreds of millions of people in the interior provinces who have benefited relatively little from the country’s belated industrial revolution. Or at least benefited relatively little compared with the coast provinces, which have always been the drivers of its commerce.

Agree with that Jack. I was really saying it’s a permanent Damocles Sword over the US limiting their options.

I think America’s strength still lies in its resilience, creativity (computers, internet etc as examples).

And its ‘can-do’ attitude which is unique and world-beating, anytime. America’s indeed any country’s wealth however comes from its manufacturing and export. Its services are important, very important, but they can’t earn foreign currency as well in that as you can in manufacturing because services are very labour intensive and easily replicated. As soon as anyone comes up with a better business practice it quickly morphs and replicates into the mainstream with the originators becoming less important. With manufacturing that doesn’t happen.

Once it stops squandering its wealth on military expeditions abroad it will recover, or at least recover somewhat.

Isn’t it sad that if the world diverted just a small a fraction say 5% of its total military spending every year, it could cure cancer, solve AGW and basically over time eliminate every single raison d’etre for lefties ever to think as they do. Aren’t we idiots.

But I know there are historical precedents for leading democratic nations losing their edge because of economy-sapping foreign military expeditions. For example, I think Athens at its peak, the USA of its day perhaps, fell after its disastrous expeditions to Sicily.

See my thinking Jack is that since the only reason we in the VRWC finance the global military alliance is to protect us lest the lefties get out of hand, that if we diverted some of that spending toward taking away their appeals to the masses, you and I could become even more wealthy.

Jack5 – re Kiwisaver being invested overseas, “cui bono” would be the question. Apparently the Chinese think NZ farms are a good investment? If the system ever did melt down I think I’d prefer to own real assets over shares in some overseas “market” that can disappear in an instant.

You don’t need any specific knowledge to be a fund manager. Anyone and everyone can be a fund manager. You can be an insurance or a car-sales person, it doesn’t matter. You can still do fund managing. I’ve suggested at Bruce Sheppard’s blog last year to the professionals in the local investment community who are readers/lurkers at Bruce’s blog, to raise their curriculum level, because, to be honest, if one has to take a look at their CFA material, it is a joke. I mean, that even 3rd form high school students can understand those stuff if they choose to sit the expensive CFA exams. I also, looked at what is covered at BCom/MCom (even MBA) courses, it is still a joke. The stuff those courses covered are now the falsified/discredited equilibrium-based financial theories (i.e., Markowitz, CAPM, APT, etc….). These false investment techniques are everywhere, either at CFA type exams or BCom/MCom/MBA courses.

Organic farming spot on Country Calendar, I’m not a greenie but this is the point of difference for NZ in a global market. Waste of time trying to compete with China and South America with intensive farming practices.

@kaya – the other think we’re quite hot-to-trot on in a global sense is animal husbandry, selective breeding and genetic mapping stuff. I recall visiting a farm / research facility in the Hawkes Bay a few years back. It was mind-blowing stuff. We need to export this capability.

A British Tory has a good lesson for Bill English (link below). David Davis, MP, is obviously pissed off with the Conservative alliance with the Lib-Democrats. He says of Cameron’s policy:

…The corollary of the big society is the smaller state. If you talk about the small state, people think you’re Attila the Hun. If you talk about the big society, people think you’re Mother Teresa.

Davis calls the Tory-Lib-Democrat alliance the Brokeback Coalition, a reference to the film about gay cowboys.
