Will Carter go early?

December 21st, 2010 at 9:09 am by David Farrar

Derek Cheng in the Herald reports:

The Labour Party will be ready to fight a byelection in the West Auckland seat of Te Atatu next year if incumbent MP Chris Carter quits before the end of the parliamentary term.

If Carter goes, it wll add to the record number of departures. MPs who were elected to this Parliament, and left are:

  • Richard Worth, National
  • Pansy Wong, National
  • Helen Clark, Labour
  • Michael Cullen, Labour
  • Winnie Laban, Labour
  • David Garrett, ACT
  • Jeanette Fitzsimons, Greens
  • Sue Bradford, Greens

So eight down, and maybe a ninth to come.

How would this be a record? There were 14 by-elections in the 19th Parliament.

I couldn’t care less what happens to the ageing and vain prat Chrissy Carter is. He should’ve disappeared from the political scene long ago.

He’s a despicable human being and another of Clark’s proteges and “gifts” to our country. The sooner he goes, the better.

I don’t like the sound of all this, recon animals and politicians have a sixth sense and head for the hills when disaster is about to befall us. This must be a bad omen, repent while you can.

It is not if he quits before the end of the term, it is if he quits at some point before the 7th of July, and in practicality the 6 month cut off date is more likely to be late May- mid June.

Out of interest, would this force the PM to actually determine the election date , or is he simply able to say there will be an election in the next 6 months… ( + the 75% vote of MPs)

“could go early if a good job offer came up”

This is code for “I need another job where I can stick my nose in the trough and have little or no scrutiny of my spending”

No doubt Cater has spoken to Aunty Helen about a job but somehow there has not been much forthcoming. I suspect Carter has cooked his goose there with the book.

I’d be quite happy for National to offer Carter a minor government job if it meant:

    1. A byelection.
    2. The chance that Labour’s majority is slashed in the electorate.
    3. Labour having to pay for the byelection, worried that if they almost lost Mana then they might well lose Te Atatu.
    4. Tizard coming back in off the list for a few months.

You can always sack Carter after the byelection. He’ll probably have a bunch of dodgy expenses by then, otherwise just use the 90 day probationary period to get rid of him.

with Wikileaks thechance of Carter going UN would be compromised I suspect. No resignation forth coming. Will wait out his time to claim more super.
He just won’t be able not to have one last suck of the sav.

As a local in the electorate, I can confirm that Carter was (until recently) well regarded. Whatever his foibles on the national stage he at least turned up to local events.

But he also committed treason against the party that gave him his seat, by (almost) anonymously smearing the leadership. What a coward. He may be right about Phil Goff, but how he raised his concerns was wrong.

I hope there is a byelection – let’s get rid of the man once and for all.
