What is more likely, at this stage, is that the relentless media narratives (DOOM, DOOM, DOOM – and anyone who doesn’t agree with us is a racist, evil, white person) may no longer be resonating and people are simply not being truthful (‘conservative bias’) or the questions are poorly structured (‘Do you think this country should in a hell of its own making’ – aka, do you support Brexit). I am inclined to think both are true, as the endless mamby-pamby nonsense we’re subject to, daily, means if someone asks, ‘How will you vote’ my answer would probably be polite, rather than honest.

      Here’s the difference:
      
      1) In the past the MSM was less partisan (or maybe they were but we could not tell. See 2)..
      
      2) In the past, the MSM could control the narrative more. Now there are blogs etc.
      
      3) This election the verbal abuse thrown at Trump supporters is more, and more orchestrated, than ever before. That means there are a lot of people who are saying “I don’t know” rather than say they support Trump. Polls normally dismiss the “I don’t know” answers. If those are more Trump than Clinton then it will be a game changer.

        Don’t disagree with 1,2 or the first part of 3. Not sure about your conclusions though. The US still has a high coverage of landlines, so access is easy. Polling companies are saying Trump supporters aren’t shy in announcing their support but actually do so proudly and defiantly.
        So not sure about the shy Tory effect.
        If there is any reason for the Polls to be wrong it will be in the sampling and where they are Polling.
        Personally I think turnout will be the difference and Dems wanting change- that means they will either not vote or will vote Trump. And those who haven’t voted before or don’t usually vote voting this time. I’m thinking blue collar and middle class here.
        The Debate is going to be Yuge and very very important for both.

        Quite. The people who are saying they’re pro-Trump are those that are “bold and defiant”. Those that are buying and wearing the “proud to be despicable” Tshirts.
        
        So where are the Trump supporters who are not prepared to be “bold and defiant”? They’re hiding in the “don’t knows”.
        
        There is far less vitriol being thrown at Clinton supporters, so they are not being “bold and defiant”. They are all prepared to say they support Clinton.
        
        Hence, I think the “undecided” will have a lot of Trump supporters who won’t say anything but will put their X next to Trump.
        
        The shy Tory effect is real and is a natural response to the hostility in the MSM, social media, etc.

        I think there could be shy Tories in the middle class who are in the blue states and want to hide from either their wife or their friends so I can see you could be right there, but would they hide that in a phone poll?
        I do think that there’s probably quite a few Dems who out of peer pressure say they support Hillary but on the day won’t vote… And some who will vote Trump.

    Trump has made some pretty impressive strides in the past month. However, that doesn’t mean the polls are wrong and using that as a justification for victory is dangerous.
    
    ‘The only poll that matters is on election night’ has been the battle cry of losers for a very long time. If Trump wins, it will have been an impressive upward slog (regardless of whether I am pro or con the man), but it will not be because the polls ‘got it wrong’ (if that occurs, it will be because the sampling methods failed, not because they were rigged in the first place).

      Zvet put up an interesting NYT piece yesterday about a little experiment they did with polling companies –they gave 4 (?) companies the raw data from a poll and the results they produced were all over the place.
      I don’t think I’d take poll results as gospel –but I take Lisa’s point and think if there is any skewing it would be against Trump.

        It’s entirely possible and different methodologies may yield very different results, but I don’t think that’s showing structural bias just yet. Again, it’s possible people are either being untruthful or the questions are very poorly structured, but that is something I would be quietly confident about (and be doing additional analysis of) rather than applying as a blanket statement. But if the question is simply, ‘Who do you plan to vote for’, then I think most people would be reasonably honest (unless there is a serious deficiency in honesty).
        
        Also, as always, the aggregate of polls remains the most reliable (as major deviations should be ironed out).

  The polls have widened in Clintons favour a bit over the weekend. She now leads in the RCP average by 1.9% nationally which is up from 0.9 late last week. The average understates the trend so the actual position today may be a bit better for Clinton May be something to do with birthers or dodgy donations or maybe anti trump leaners getting a fright because the pools closed up.
  The 538 projections show Trump winning Nevada , Iowa, Ohio and Florida, keeping North Carolina in the red column and still not becoming President. He has to win Pennsylvania to win the election.
  Still Clintons to lose but the debates will be crucial.

  The point of taking refugees is not to make our lives better, any more than the point of giving to charity is to make ourselves richer. It is to make their lives better.
  
  This case has not actually harmed anybody who was in New Zealand before this family arrived, and the fact that they are now in New Zealand means that the daughter has a better chance of a decent life than would have been the case if they were still in the Congo.

I am intrigued by the so called media experts blaming Nick Smith for the “failure” of the Kermadecs World Heritage region.
It is said that the Maori were not consulted – this is not true – many Maori groups have been in discussion for some years before it was formally announced, but because they cannot get their own way it is easy to blame Nick Smith – he is the current National Government scourge of the so called media and Maori PR people.
I believe that if the Government give way on this Maori will cheer, and continue to do this on everything.
It creates a continuing precedence which is unhealthy for our country.
And may well have an effect on the re election of the National Government. Many mature voters will not support the National by not voting. They have had enough of continually being taken to the cleaners by Maori.
Of course Angry Andy would give in if it suited him, unlike Helen Clark on the Seashore legislation – he is currently in favour of the National along with the Greens, but Russell Norman has not decided yet if it suits him.
Angry is awaiting his instruction from the union masters to the proposal but will vacillate tomorrow if it suits them when he gets back from Canada where he is meeting young Trudeau who will teach Angry what Socialism is really about. He is a typical spend spend to get Canada out of the financial crap they are in.

Some light stuff in the local body elections.

Crazy Tubby Hansen, the third candidate for Christchurch Mayor, hasn’t been featuring in the usual MSM publicity – policy statements etc.

In his mayoral campaign he is the candidate of his own Economic Euthenics Party.

He is also standing for the Canterbury District Health Board on behalf of another of his own parties: Electronic Schizophrenia.

Tubby is concerned about rays that he fears are bombarding Christchurch. Elections are his hobby. He has been standing at local and national elections for decades, and must spend most of his savings on the fees and has very little to spend on advertising.

It could be entertaining if Tubby ever got elected to some board or other. He’s getting on in years now, so the chances are getting slimmer.

I like eccentrics, and wish we had more, preferably much smarter than Tubby.

The Hooerald today celebrates academic prowess with this headline: “NZ universities ranked among world’s best, again.”

The report underneath shows they rank from 165th in the world to around 600th. That doesn’t include private and Maori tertiary institutions.

The whole list looks to be crap, however, ranking Oxford University as the world leader, above such technology power houses as Caltech, Stanford, and MIT. Oxford is mainly arts frivolity.

  There are three issues with the headline/topic.
  
  (1) Merely being ranked in a list that includes good universities means you can say we’re ‘ranked among’.
  (2) These surveys are almost always heavily qualitative (the actual intellectual input or output isn’t what gets you to the top).
  (3) We love to think we’re doing well and aren’t going to take a cold, hard, look at our performance (and I’m not being nasty about our unis, just that we aren’t trying to create world leaders most of the highly advanced fields – we don’t have the clusters for a lot of areas and concentrate on a smaller subset that we’re good at).

  Kiwis have been involved with Oxford, MIT and Caltech. It was a Kiwi who promoted MIT from a minor institution to where it is today. Oxford may well owe its top ranking to Kiwi John Hood’s time as Vice Chancellor even though he did not go down well with the crusty old dons there. Some parts of NZ universities do shine brightly – for example several years ago Victoria University’s law school was ranked about 20th in the world.

I can sympathise with this guy as a couple of years back I was taking a domestic flight from New Plymouth to Auckland and there was only one spare seat on the plane left and it was next to me.
We were just about to leave when some big fat blob of a women got on and levered herself in the seat next to me.
Well that was one of the most uncomfortable 45 minutes of my life as I was squashed against the window with half of her in my seat and her horrible body odour just about making me spew.
The guy in the article got thrown off but believe me staying is equally as bad.
Time to banish blobs to the cargo hold.

  A few years ago I was flying Wellington to Napier in a smallish Air NZ aircraft to go home for a break. A female in the seat in front of me suddenly fully extended her seat right back so I had a close up of her grey hairs and could virtually see down the front of her dress. I was unable to fully use my tray and gentle reminders were ignored.
  
  Finally the hostess became involved and after a few arguments the passenger reluctantly said she would move her seat upright… Ever so Slightly.
  
  By this time I was really pissed off and as the seat moved I suddenly pushed hard against it. It shot forward and the contents of her tray including her drink finished up on her lap. What a mess.
  
  The hostess cracked up as it looked so funny.

New law scraps priority to place abused kids with relatives

A new law outlined today will axe a longstanding provision that gives priority to placing abused children with foster parents from the same extended family or tribe.

Social Development Minister Anne Tolley said the law would require that any child who is removed from its family and cannot be returned to immediate family “must be placed with a safe, stable and loving family at the earliest opportunity”.

The change removes a 27-year-old provision that gave priority to placing a child with “a person who is a member of the child’s or young person’s hapu or iwi (with preference being given to hapu members), or, if that is not possible, who has the same tribal, racial, ethnic, or cultural background as the child”.

Instead, the first principle in the new arrangements for children removed from their parents is that “decisions should be centred around the child or young person’s best interests and understanding the views and needs of the child”.

      No d4j it is a substitute for the nicotine that you presently get from smoking cigarettes.
      Costs about 3 bucks for the equivalent of a packet so saves lots
      and has no tar etc so is far better for you.
      I am actually trying to be nice D4j .
      Quite a few smokers on here and among my friends have switched to it and they all recon it is heaps better in every way .
