I think you guys are being a bit unfair on Tane. You need to remember that he actually believes the Labour propaganda which they’ve spouted for the past nine years which is why he must be finding things so difficult at present. I can’t imagine what it must be like to watch your world unravel as each political belief you hold is exposed for the lies that they are. But you should remember as this process continues Tane and Co’s attacks will become more and more desperate.

Over the past few months regular readers here will have already seen the beginnings of this desperation with the co-ordinated attack campaign in blogs like the standard, kbb and newzblog. It does seem though that even they are starting to loose faith which is why if you take the time to look at the comment sections on their blogs they seem like echo chambers of the left as the remnants of the faithful cling to each other and cry out “I still believe”.

Unfortunately as the election nears, I suspect that their desperation and attacks will most likely continue and escalate which is why I have to recommend RIP (Remove it Permanently). It was suggested by another contributor here, DC (http://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2008/02/blog_bits_on_waitangi_day.html) and its simply brilliant as tool which allows block out all that annoying background noise so real discussion still take place without it constantly being distracted by the trolls.

Well if one was to entertain a dog whistle the following imagined scene would be slightly more subtle and appropriate:

Election Night 2008:

Reporter: “We’re here at National Party HQ where John Key can be seen on the phone taking what we believe is the concession by the Prime Minister Helen Clark………. and the phone call appears to be ending…… let’s try and get a word here with the leader of the National Party……

Much shoving ensues, camera waves wildly but finally settles on the face of Key.

Reporter: “Mr Key. Was that the Prime Minister and has she conceded the election?”
John Key: “Ah Yes. That was the PM and she has conceded the election….”

Background cheering and yelling.

Reporter: Could you tell us what she said in the call Mr Key?”

Key looks straight into the camera and considers the hundreds of thousands of registered woman voters. His eye twinkles, he smiles, makes his decision, and changes his voice …..

“I’m melting! I’m melting! What a world. What a world!”

Re the Morgan it was done Feb 4 – 17th BEFORE the Owen Glenn/Labour/NZPoodles First fiasco really busted out in the MSM.

Labour are dead meat, their only hope is if Key makes the mother of all mistakes and lets them back into the game. Joe Public has had a gutsful of Clark. With Clark and friends now punch drunk and on the ropes there are no policy initiatives worth remembering instead there are serious problems in health, law and order, new electoral law which is milstone around the Governments neck, and the economy in need of a skilled and delicate hand. Also the bureaucrats will turn on them too (they usually turn on failing administrations).

My prediction is within three months serious splits will emerge inside the Labour Party with all those factions who secretly hate each other picking over the entrails, Clark will not be immune from this either. Goff will be left in a no win situation no matter what he does because the extreme left don’t like him and will resist him if he ever becomes leader and Labour will suffer devastion on election night making the Leaders job not worth having. My other prediction is that NZPoodles First will also split right down the middle, Peters is now a knackered politician with no credibility left (even the oldies will dump him at the election).

The Maori Party will be interesting to watch, have they got the adroit political skills required to maneovure themselves to play a constructive role in the next Parliament? The Greens can gain by attacking Labour and picking the many unhappy left wing voters who now must be getting the jitters. Though it must be said Russel Norman is a serious liability.

Philu – “nasty”?

Some posts maybe have a nasty element to them but the bulk from what I can see seem to be simply taking delight in the slow fall of their persecutors. An entirely natural human phenomenon.

You need to recall that this govt has been on the attack for a large slice of NZ’s population (eg rich pricks, chinless scarf-wearers, wreckers and haters) for most of its time.

Call it revenge. Call it he who laughs last laughs best (we won you lost eat that, etc). Call it chickens coming home to roost.

Call it what you will but I for one most definitely take delight in their fall. I have never liked them or their ‘greed and envy’ politics (as opposed to the more old-fashioned labour style). They have caused me and my family unnecessary pain and intrusion and financial loss and difficulty.

Provided there is no nasty personal element to the attack (which unfortunately there is a little) then this labour lot simply have no choice but to toughen up and take their own medicine.

Good riddance.

In response to your comment above: I don’t know if I can speak for D4J and some of the other guys you find offensive, but I was and still am a staunch Jenny Shipley supporter. So stick your accusations of mysogyny (look it up) where the sun don’t shine.

If you bother to actually read and actually follow and actually understand the thread above, it was TANE who automatically assumed that “Ding Dong” referred to the “witch is dead” song from the “Wizard of Oz” musical. (LONG before your time. Ask your grandparents, if you have any, or elderly neighbours, if you’re on speaking terms). The “right wing” ogres you condemn, thought of imagery of exit gates at the airport, the end of a round of boxing, and “for whom the bell tolls” (another one to ask the old folk about).

Seeing Tane started it, some of us felt licensed to indulge in a bit of humour at his expense. Tane is mature enough to have let it alone, notice.

And vto above, says it all. For sheer mean-spiritedness, it is hard to beat the current government leadership. “Chinless scarf-wearers”, “Rich pricks”,
etc…..

Looking at the broad sweep of history, are there ANY “libertarian” equivalents to the Bolsheviks, the Maoists, The Khmer Rouge, the Sendero Luminoso……..? Had there been, they would have turned THEIR nation into the world’s best off people. If the Bolsheviks had been Libertarians, Russia would have been up there with the USA.

Oddly enough, though the Libertarian “right” BELIEVES fervently in the “right” of their cause, there has NEVER been a movement that would stoop to murder in the pursuit of this “right”. Funny, that……….

And the left are so good at deliberately misinterpreting anytrhing and everything, for two reasons. One, they’re mostly obtusely stupid people at the core, and secondly, they want to create the aura of victimhood. Because, in the leftoid world, victimhood is strength and a sign the morally they deserve special priveleges.

Hence the sight of that clever but stupid little man, Cullen, pretending to be outraged. Being outraged, being the victim, makes it right to call anyone anything they like. It makes it acceptable to be a trotterist, pervert the law and be corrupt, makes it acceptable to treat those who oppose you in anyway, ultimately, you like.

Sad, really, but dangerous.

And on the original matter of this post, if Margaret Wilson went yesterday, nothing will ever quite make up for the absolute disgrace she has brought upon the office of speaker. She has got to be the most appallingly corrupt and dishonest person to occupy the position, a person of such miniscule talent and such an overwhelming sense of entitlement and bias that it will take a person of quite formidable talent to even start to restore matters. I speak as one who has endured some of her lecturing, and then she was an empty vessel with a fine sense of resentment and a way of poisoning any sense in a subject. No point in making fun of the completely irrelevant matter that she has lost a leg and has a prosthetic except that the most genuine thing about her is that prosthetic.

The work to end victimhood by ensuring justice for all – regardless of race, religion, gender etc.

And it is true that all that defence of this equal liberty and place for all, requires continued vigilance – especially from those who practice Orewa style dog whistling and cannot stand the educated and humanitarian left standing in solidarity with others whom others might exploit/persecute for some advantage for themselves.

The Fed handed out far too much cheap cash for too long – all to prevent the American elite take a hit on their stock market profits of the 90’s. They cut taxes on the super rich, they cut cpaital gains taxes, they made saving in cash unattractive – all to maintain the stockmarket bubble (a ruling class self interest subversion of the economic system). This resulted in all sorts of new financial vehicles (including reinsuring the bonds of investment companies that were high risk – think BNZ loans to Chase, Equiticorp, Ariadne etc) and of course the temporary cheap loans to American home buyers. Now it’s all turned back on them while oil and food prices are causing an inflationary impact globally.

The whole world is now facing lower growth and inflationary pressures. In the 70’s the result was stagflation. It will be interesting how the more tax cut and monetarist era of today copes with the pressure which undermined faith in Keynesian economics.

The right wing’s pretence or veneer of being a party and government for all of society ends when any questioning “of whom” they actually govern for is made.

The classic poses used are

1. “we know best” and our critics are not informed.
2. a defence of the poor and the worker and exposure of how we rule in our own self interest (how the wage gap with Australia widened in the 1990’s, how income and wealth disparity increased, how many went into and stayed in poverty), is class warfare against us. And is divisive – we are scared that once opportunity for across the board tax cuts are used up we will lose once again.

I am first a realist, I did not vote until MMP, unless one was living in a marginal electorate why would one bother.

Yes, while I thought victory in 2008 was possible (50/50) back in 2005, I do not now.

I am reminded of something Bill Clinton said in late 1999, that the gains from economic growth of the 1990’s had yet to be shared with the poor (or all of America) – he said it once and then never mentioned it again. Maybe he wanted Gore to make it his theme (he did not). I wonder which leader in Labour will return Labour to it’s roots – certainly this government has left the opportunity for their successor to reclaim that ground.

Interesting musings. Labour came to power in 1999 on the back of a “it’s time for change” campaign. Now we’re in 2008, and Labour supporters can’t see the irony when the same campaign is being used against them. That’s before we even get into the competing policy mixes (and corresponding arguments about what’s “best” for the country).

I think Labour in 99 offered more “policy” change than National does now. Particularly when Alliance was very much an incoming government partner. But in 1999, it was more a symbolism of the end of the market reform drive to the right.

Though much of that was more of a few retrenchments back to former policy positions with more acceptance of reform than some would care to acknowledge.

In much the same way, National in 2008 is offering only some changes, and more acceptance of post 99 changes than one would have thought likely in either 1999 or 2005.

There’s been a lot of talk about Labour’s post-1999 push to end market reform. But in my view that’s a myth. Aside from obvious areas, such as employment relations and Working for Families, I’m struggling to see areas where Labour has genuinely reversed National’s policy mix. In saying this, I’m leaving to one side its social policy (civil unions, s 59 debate etc), and focusing on economic policy.

That’s not to let National off scott-free. In my view (and it’s only my opinion), National has allowed itself to be pushed into a corner, by responding to public opinion on a sequence of issues, and abandoning principles-based politics. The result is policy confusion. Diehard National supporters will no doubt disagree, but I couldn’t even begin to articulate National’s core principles and policy, beyond its broad-based commitment to market-based solutions.

Whatever one thinks of Act and its policy mix, at least their principles are reasonably coherent.

But the clause goes on to say: “… by abolishing the use of parental force for the purpose of correction.” That is where the difference between ACT members and, I guess, now the vast majority of MPs lies. I do not think it is Parliament’s role to say to mums and dads that if they lightly tap their toddlers on the bottom, they are committing a criminal offence, and that they should not do it. This bill says not only that parents should not do that but that they are committing a crime against the Crimes Act in so doing.

He went on to say:

What sort of law are we passing here tonight? It is a law that people can disobey—as detailed by the Prime Minister and the leader of the National Party—because the police will not prosecute them. Well, the ACT party believes in law that means something. The ACT party believes in a police force whose job it is to uphold the law, not to ignore it. The Prime Minister and the leader of the National Party have said: “Don’t worry about this law. The police will ignore it, and if they don’t, we’ll change it.” That is why I say that I admire Sue Bradford and the members of the Māori Party. They have stuck to the principle of what the law is about. We have heard from Helen Clark and John Key that we should not worry about the law, because it will not be upheld. Well, I do not agree with that. I think we should pass law that is clear and that we expect to be enforced.

Now, whether one agrees or disagrees with Rodney Hide, at least he clearly articulated his reasons.

On economic issues, though, I’d be struggling to articulate National’s position on most things – and that’s a ridiculous situation for the major opposition party to find itself in (the public don’t understand its core principles).

Getting back to the topic of this thread (Margaret Wilson leaving, lest we forget), love her or hate her, at least one knows what she stands for.
