The term dark (energy or matter) is just a label. Whatever they are, they don’t interact (directly – if at all) with visible matter/energy in this universe, that’s why they’re undetectable if they exist, but not yet detected. It is the same thing as matter/anti-matter. It is just a label so as scientists can differentiate them. Eg, the PET scanners (Positron Emission Tomography), used at Hospitals, is powered by positron which is the anti-matter (anti-particle) of electron. Same mass as electron but opposite spin & charge.

Well, if all members of a certain society are nameless (ie, they don’t have names), then there will be confusion when members interact with each others. If they have names, then their interactions is much better, since person A, knows that person B owes him $100 that he borrowed 2 weeks ago or something like that.

Visible matter/energy in our Universe interchanges as in Pair production process (energy changing into matter) and also in nuclear fission/fusion process (mass changing into energy). Dark matter/energy would be the same, because for physical reality to exist (as opposed to non-existence or nothing) then dark matter/energy must obey fundamental conservation laws such as:

– Momentum conservation
– Energy conservation

Energy conservation is where Einstein E=m*c^2 comes in. It must be obeyed by any physical existence, be it dark/visible matter/energy.

My prediction is and I hope I’m wrong, is that this is going to become a global cause celebre and eventually in people’s minds it will be conflated by people with the global issues of today which is the GFC, mostly. And possibly Iran. Those in favour of prosecuting to the max will be perceived and accused of being equivalent to being with the bankers and those in favour of a conviction but light penalty because it was about truth and justice to being with those on the side of truth and justice.

That’s my prediction, not my opinion BTW.

My opinion on this is that PFC Manning grievously breached a fundamental duty of trust. His motives weren’t completely venal like Aldridge Ames so he does not deserve Ames’ fate – life with no possibility of release (in spite of US close ally Israel’s best most intense pressure to get him released so he can live a feted life in Israel, disgusting isn’t it) – but he does deserve a very significant penalty.

Even if he released this stuff, there is reportedly much worse stuff out there as to what really happened. There are numerous reports for example of Abu Gharrib videos shown to Congressmen that showed young boys being raped by the guards with their mothers screaming as they watched. The sources are numerous as to that. Who knows.

Those hoods one saw in the published evidence BTW originated from the Israeli tactics with the Palestinians. They’re smeared with excrement on the inside, at least when the Israeli’s do it.

So compared to all that how does Manning’s crime really rate in the grand scheme?

They may have different equations, but it wouldn’t change the fact that those energy/momentum conversations must hold or otherwise physical entities can just be created out of thin air (non-conservation process). I’m all for education but it has to be on our terms and in line with our cultural requirements. It’s no coincidence the success of Maori from Kohanga reo to iwi corporate structures is, among other things, because of self determination and freedom to educate without oppression while incorporating worthy cultural values.

My belief is that we structure education to suit our needs, strengths and desires to succeed. If that means charter schools dedicated to sports or trades, arts, seamanship, tourism, whatever then i’m all for it because as much as we’re failing in the system, the system is failing us.

That is not good for society on the whole, least of all us Pasifikans.

FFS, energy conservation & momentum conservation are universal fundamental laws of the physical universe. They work on objects in the macro scale (cars, trucks, planets, galaxies, tennis balls, aeroplane, etc,…) as well as objects in the micro/nano/pico scale, (protons, electrons, photons) etc…

If dark matter/energy exist they must obey energy/momentum conservation laws in order to be physically existed.

No they don’t and there is nothing to suggest dark matter or dark energy must if they are not made of the same elementary particles as matter or behave as energy does.

Whatever they are, they are not cars, trucks, planets or neccessarily made up of protons, electrons photons etc to behave according to Einstein’s or Newton’s theories.

It is entirely possible and probable that things appear out of thin air from apparently nothing because they exist in a non physical form outside of the 4d construct in dimensions yet unknown and you can’t prove they don’t.

Pollywog, I’m curious about your criticism of Falafulu. His politics (libertarianism) is clearly diametrically opposed to yours (a kind of ethno-nationalist socialism from what I can make out), but he is clearly an intelligent, successful individual, with a PhD in a highly technical field, and he teaches young people higher maths. I don’t know him personally, or know how deeply involved he is with his culture; but if he is able to help other people’s education – in particular other PI, Maori or other kids who have struggled — and help them achieve success and personal empowerment in their lives, isn’t that a good thing?

I skim thru it and yes. Indeed momentum/energy conservation laws are used to hunt for the existence of dark matter. It means that whatever they are, they do obey fundamental universal laws of the universe (energy/momentum conservation laws).

I agree that there are some sick people around and that Manning’s crime is of a different sort and probably pales in comparison with some that have recently come to light.
In case of Abu Ghraib, Charles Graner, and his former fiancée, Lynndie England were two sick individuals.
Where there more people involved?
Absolutely.
Have we seen and heard everything?
Probably not.
Then there was the story of the twelve U.S. soldiers who faced trial after Afghan civilians were killed for sport and their fingers collected as trophies.

They all are a sorry excuse for human beings and an embarrassment for the US army.

I don’t know of any US commentators who have tried to defend the actions of those individuals or thought they should not be punished.

The soldiers understood they had complete power over the lives of the citizens of a country they’d invaded and were going about destroying. Soon after the invasion the defending army had slipped away, the fight on one level was already finished but the fight they would ultimately win had only begun.
The search for weapons became a dedication to destroying infrastructure and destabilisation. The fundamentals of torture, kidnappings and deportation of citizens to taken to foreign prisons where they might be killed or held without trial was an expression of the true cause of the invasion – to render Iraq powerless and destabilised for decades into the future. 100,000 at least paid with their lives even though the majority of those were not fighters, houses, land, wealth and resources were stolen, secretarian violence promoted, a peope subdued on all sides by a country ignoring International Law – America created the climate for the acts committed by their soldiers. To argue the individual events fails to recognise the overall plan.

Disputed, see UN Security Council resolutions, such as Resolution 1441 and Resolution 678. That is of course if you think the UN, controlled by a bunch of corrupt, anti-Semitic, misogynistic, dictatorial countries, should be deciding what is right or wrong.

We could of course have left Saddam and his psychotic murdering sons in place, gassing Kurds, and committing genocide on the marsh Arabs.
Or we could have beaten them into submission with UN another resolution so the corrupt lefty politicians and UN officials could cream the system even more.
I bet you also believe in the so called ‘Arab Spring’.
And what do we do with Assad in Syria and the mullahs in Iran?
Look the other way?

You trip up on the 1st one Andy. The Iraq Army was not withdrawing through Europe as the Germans had done in WW2 destroying bridges and rail to hinder the Allied advance. They had simply taken off their uniforms and disappeared into their own country while the Americans targetted and destroyed power stations, water treatment plants, airports. There was no need to do that because they weren’t fighting a retreating army, the army was no more. They were delivering a message as to their intentions. Those actions unleashed and promoted other conflicts all designed to destabalise Iraq – the way the Americans have left it now.
Ha, look the other way. We all looked the other way and 100 probably 200,000 people died to become not only dead but also ‘free’ the American way. They’ve left a country on it’s knees and that put it that way to save it. Sure.
