  Has anybody else noticed Kiwiblog become VERY slow and unresponsive on android devices?
  
  Like, you can start typing a comment and there can be 20 seconds of lag before characters appear.
  
  For me it started on the day of the “about Todd Barclay” thread and I assumed it was heavy traffic from that.
  
  But to this day it still continues.
  
  No problem on PC. No problems with the same android device on other websites. Just Kiwiblog on Android…

  My cousins were all mad keen Rugby players.
  some represented Southland and so forth.
  When my brother was around 8 yrs his school traveled to Stewart Island to play Rugby with the school kids there.
  
  My Granddad used to have all my cousins on saying my brother was the only one who had played overseas 🙂

  A few years ago a young Thai girl was hit by a train she didn’t hear on a level crossing near our office in Bangkok. She was listening to her iPhone.
  Apparently it took awhile to remove her body parts from around the train wheels so normal service could resume.

    Reminds me of a story told to me by a London Underground worker I knew years ago. They had to clean up after a “jumper” one day. Managed to get the body off and out without too much problem, but couldn’t, um, find the head.
    
    They had to lift the train up off the rails, inside the station, and sure enough, the head had lodged up underneath the carriage. He said it fell down and bounced twice. Nasty.

Its not hard to see what happens when the Lie-bour-Green Party infested Wellington City Council are in charge of public money. Just a matter of time when their will be a massive cost blowout,for their out of control spending. Their unilateral decision to spend millions of dollars on big ticket items,without referral to their rate payers. Case in point,are the old clapped out council building,that needs an earthquake up date to an amount of circa 100 Million Dollars. A massive spend on so called living wage,plus any other spending that takes their fancy,such as huge rate increases every year. That beggars belief. Speaking of beggars,was wondering why the goody two shoes,too sweet to be wholesome Justin Lester,wants to keep the beggars in Wellington,no wonder, the Wellington City council are beggars wearing suits on horseback,except with a guaranteed source of handouts,by screwing the ratepayers,for every hare-brained scheme that tickles Lester and his cohorts fancy.

      The approx sums are thus
      About 500 workers will get a three dollar increase from the council’s previous mimimum wage. That’s about 500x3x2000 per year divided by about 100,000 rate payers. Thirty dollars a rate payer or $2.50/monthly bill.

    My concern is the impact of $20 an hour on job destruction. That is $800 per week. I have two young men in my family who have low education and cycle through minimum wage jobs. NOBODY will pay these guys $800 per week.

      They say they pay a living wage but they are increasingly outsourcing the maintenance of your berms, parks and community facilities to unpaid volunteer groups. Am I volunteering when I mow my berms. I guess. But by forceably taking your rates but withdrawing services those who don’t want to live in a dump volunteer. Then they pay those remaining a living wage or even a big fat managers salary for those managing the slaves and indentured servants,or volunteers. Perhaps it’s time to stop volunteering I think I’m getting jaded.

      I’m quite happy for my rates to be used to pay council workers a living wage, providing they put in the effort.
      By the way I’ve never been on a bus where the driver has pulled over to the side of the road and casually started texting his mates or fiddled around on Facebook. Not that I’m suggesting that much higher paid office workers would do such a thing.

The little bald super ex SAS ? Deputy will be concerned. No matter what Winston says, as he is a known liar even within his own party members, that little baldy ist kaput.
I understand that a grand announcement of “Wankers” entry to the hierarchy of Winston’s Party is due to be announced this week – probably from the Green Parrot, or some bar.

      Never had it automatically added to my bill when staying at a hotel, but then I didn’t select those channels. Besides you can chose to pay for incidentals in cash on checkout. Standard practice in relation to minibar use etc for a lot of businesses when their staff travel.

      You do seem to have some sort of inside knowledge ztev but I doubt it extends to knowing what is on Tim Groser’s hotel account incurred while representing New Zealand.
      
      I have the option of paying back any personal expenses taken on the company’s credit card to my employer and they are happy that I do so even with the administration involved.
      
      I am confident, that if what you assert about Tim Grosers hotel accounts while on Government business is true, that he will have paid any personal expenses incurred, back. Unlike Jones who had to be publically humiliated and shamed for $10.00, a wanker from the left with the entitlelist attitudes that just go on forever.

The media keep going on about the Todd Barclay affair and are doing absolutely nothing about a donor to the Labour Party slave gate Fraud. This donor should have been named over twenty days ago and the Electoral Commission has had no balls to deal with it. Like most elections Labour get to make statements saying National are donkey deep in dirty politics but when Labour are caught out it is covered up and it is time for a fair deal for all Parties not just those that make out they are squeaky clean.

      2. It is highly unlikely that he was an independent contractor working for Labour.

      1. Any donation was either inserted into a Labour Party account or laundered through an account not physically traceable to Matt.
      2. Matt was a salaried employee of the Labour Party or was an employee of a company that was contracted to Labour to provide services.

    In the case of the interns you have an entire organisation importing workers on a large scale in conflict with their immigration policy.

Irrespective of what is going on with Labour and a couple of disgruntled interns and their clumsy and shady (although possibly legal) attempt to circumvent election funding rules
        
        …National are getting what they deserve at the moment for failing to act decisively when they had the chance. Irrespective of Barclay’s rights as a private citizen, it is a matter of political necessity and public confidence that MPs must cooperate fully with police investigations. No ifs, buts or maybes.         Kimbo, use of the Parliamentary privilege shield to spread potentially defamatory accusations is a matter of serious discussion.
        
        The danger, to posters like Psycho Milt and to blog publishers, is in loose reporting of the claims made in Parliament, or in building on them or extrapolating from them, and thus negating the protection from defamation action.
        
        Sooner or later someone is going to be seriously whacked in the pocket for such reporting and statements.
        
        I believe we posters need to take care not to entangle our host in any such mess.

Building on some very loose reporting, groups like ASH and the Problem Gambling foundation had their reputations smeared by KB posters who decided that they were paying Labour for contracts.         Kiwiblog seems to me to be turning into a mirror version of The Standard lately – ideologically motivated sooks, and crybabies judging everything according to their tribal predisposition rather than the facts. And let’s face it – no one from National will want to take defamation action, as they want the Barclay affair to disappear down a wormhole asap and stay there! Plus those of us who have been able to piece together the clues that Whale Oil gave a few years ago know that a senior National official has a very large skeleton in the cupboard, hence that person tends to keep a very low profile despite the supposedly public role. Defamation proceedings risks that coming out.

        I was the one who suggested that concerning the Problem Gambling Foundation, and I did specify it was speculation. I don’t know, and I was simply applying a ‘cui bono?’ test.
        
        However, I would take DPF’s word for it that he was relying on a reliable anonymous source when it comes to a significant donation from an agency that also receives significant government funding. That is the trust that the media deserve when it comes to reporting leaks, as readers are then expected to read between the lines, and yes, sometimes even speculate, as the public and media pressure creates a situation where cover ups and hidden information that is in the public interest then come to light. So, no, it is not “loose reporting”. But if it ever turns out DPF was making it up, or inadvertently acting as a gullible mouthpiece, then it’s time to flush him.

It is not even a clear and obvious case of defamation, and more to the point you know very well no defamation action is likely.

  Rather stale news. She was sentenced to 6 years for the drug crimes in 1988 and was called to the bar in Queensland in 2008. A similar scenario cold happen in NZ. She would not have been called to the bar via usual channels but would have needed to make a specific High Court application which may or may not been approved in particular with the applicant staying ‘clean’ for 10 years or so.

Received this message today and it would be appreciated if you could share it. Thank you

We are deeply saddened as an item of extreme value went missing yesterday morning. We had been out and returned around 6am to find a brazen gang had struck our place. We believe there were witnesses .

The silverware taken had been handed down for generations, and so also holds great sentimental value. It is very recognisable, and we believe the gang will have trouble in trying to get rid of it.

Fortunately the incident was captured on camera and although they were dressed all in black, little effort was made to cover their faces. This gang appear to take delight in what they do, with some smiling towards the camera as the others could be seen making off on bicycles.

We have strong reason to believe they could be headed your way. We hold little hope in getting it back ourselves so money is not an object.

Please contact me in the strictest confidence if you know anything.

        Oracle and SRC were playing dirty pool right from the word go.
        There were the rule changes, the class (of yacht changes), the removal of the Ac regatta from Auckland (which lead to the cone of silence arbitration), the change of the ACEA rules that prevented criticism of the event (gagging Dalts as Rangitoto notes) and Oracle and the poodles signing up to the framework agreement. I am sure there was other stuff as well that will come out in due course.
        That is why in an interview, Sir Stephen Tindall talked about returning integrity to the event.
        And let us not forget Jimmy s was skipper of a class catamaran that sailed in a number of events with a non-class kingpost.
        That cheating lead to a number of the Oracle team being stood down from sailing and prevented them participating in the 2013 event.
        Perhaps with that background Dalts comments about Jimmy s come into perspective.

      I am really looking forward to a documentary/book coming out of the kiwi comeback from 2013 and all the nasty bullshit (and dodgy rule-cheat/skirting win of 2013) Oracle pulled to sabotage their chances, like:
      -Changing the class of boat well into the campaign after Luna Rosa and Team NZ had already spent many millions on their designs.
      -Moving to Bermuda (not even same country as where it was won) which had almost zero sponsor appeal (but didn’t hamper billionaire backers)
      -Cancelling the Auckland round of the America’s Cup world Series, killing ETNZ’s ability to gain govt support and local sponsorship.
      -Selling NZ TV rights to massively overpriced Sky with tiny number of viewers, again cutting off ETNZ from potential sponsor interest.
      -Publically lambasting ETNZ for getting rid of Barker and saying should replace Dalton.
      -Skewed rules allowing Oracle multiple boats and late daggerboard rule changes that helped them when they ran into trouble.
      -Getting deeply into bed with Softbank Japan – skirting the one boat rule by sharing design and development data with a ‘challenger’ team for fucks sake.
      -Targeting ETNZ for ‘special treatment’ in Bermuda (expecting much more coming out in coming months on this) and elsewhere because they wouldn’t sign up to Ellison/Coutt’s idea of maintaining the AC in Bermuda with a 2 year cycle regardless of who wins. ETNZ was only team holding out against this.
      
      It makes for an almost cinematic underdog comeback story against the great evil.

    While Spithill was magnanimous in defeat, he certainly wasn’t so “sporting” in the lead up to Bermuda. While i think Dalton could have taken the high road and been a lot more measured in his comments, he has obviously been to hell and back and is nursing a lot of grudges. Has anyone got a thought on the media’s push to show their TV Hosts are honest and proud of the way they apply the facts to the stories they announce on the Daily News Bulletins that they host. It started with TV One and now has others following the trend. This shows that the CEO’s of these networks know that the public have lost faith in the truth being produced by MSM in NZ.

  The problem with that is that artificially raising costs may hurt the very people you aim to help, Venezuela being the latest example.
  
  Another way of thinking is to drive the supply side costs down, thus making more things affordable, ensure people are educated and trained in highly productive work, which then generates more income, satisfaction and tax revenue for society as a whole.

OPINION: Mainfreight has had a record year. According to its 2017 annual report, New Zealand’s largest freight company registered an unprecedented profit of $103 million in 2016-17, up 17 per cent on the previous 12 months. Revenue was up as well, surpassing $2.3 billion.

In his report preamble, founder and chairman Bruce Plested lauded the company’s achievements. Then, he went a little off topic:

“With 2017 being an election year in New Zealand and in some European countries, it is worth asking these questions of our politicians. Too many of them fail the test and are lost in platitudes, jokes, jibes, foxy words and sheer procrastination.” …

… So began a brief but searing social commentary on New Zealand’s shortcomings in housing, education and the environment. Plested mused on housing inaffordability, chronic underachievement by school pupils in poor areas and the abusive relationship between big business and Mother Nature …

        I find it untenable to describe it a solutionless problem, yet I hear it every day, it is no one’s fault.
        Let us look at the meaning of the word government.
        
        “A government is the system by which a state or community is controlled.”
        That is the first sentence from wiki. It does not take a lot of parsing does it? We have local government and central government, and between them they have catastrophically over sold the accommodation space.
        It was not me, it was not you, it can only be government of some hue.
        Until the debate is conducted at this level we are letting the frog boil, and unfortunately the blighter is dead.
        
        And we have seen a fast transfer of housing ownership driven by a simple issue of overselling the rooms.

International celebrities “blasting” our govt in the middle of the election period smacks of party politics and electioneering. It’s quite scary how globalised party politics has become. Nzers should be deciding the direction of our own country. I like you Jamie. You make a mean roast. But I care not for what you think of our government.

And I don’t believe globalisation of politics, media or thought, with a centralised elite who do our thinking for us, is the answer. I think NZers are smart enough to do our own thinking and should decide our own destiny.     Jamie Oliver got a very short shift from the US school system when he tried his obesity preaching there. However bad their dietary beliefs are: tomato sauce is a vegetable as are fries.

On Thursday, Trump tweeted that he had no idea if someone taped conversations with Comey, but he did not have any such tapes. Thrown a compliment that it was “a smart way to make sure he stayed honest at those hearings” Trump responded, “Well, it wasn’t very stupid, I can tell you.”

“Let’s break down what just happened there,” Oliver dove in with both feet.

“He didn’t just casually admit to misleading the American public. He also implied that doing so may have swayed Comey testimony which, if that was his intent, could constitute witness tampering.”

Trump also implied in his remark that tossing out the tape idea compelled Comey to tell the truth. In so doing, Oliver noted, Trump verified Comey’s account of his interaction with Trump, “which is incredibly damaging to the president.”

“So yeah, Trump might be right. It wasn’t very stupid.

“It was extraordinarily stupid.”

Fantastic news from yesterday;

John Banks has failed in his latest bid to claw back $190,000 in court costs, after spending years fighting and overturning his conviction for filing a false electoral return.

The former Auckland mayor eventually had the conviction overturned and sought costs from the High Court at Auckland, but Justice Edwin Wylie declined to award them.

The Court of Appeal agreed with Justice Wylie.

He then sought permission from the Supreme Court to appeal that decision to the Supreme Court, but in a decision released on Wednesday the court said there was “no appearance of a miscarriage of justice”.

An excellent outcome for the taxpayer. Not so much for Banks though, the poor wee snowflake.

A new study by Environmental Progress (EP) warns that toxic waste from used solar panels now poses a global environmental threat. The Berkeley-based group found that solar panels create 300 times more toxic waste per unit of energy than nuclear-power plants. Discarded solar panels, which contain dangerous elements such as lead, chromium, and cadmium, are piling up around the world, and there’s been little done to mitigate their potential danger to the environment.

  Laws of unintended consequence operate everywhere, well done for pointing this one out.
  These cases look to me solvable by warehousing for the future. Whatever blend of resources the planet is constructed from is all that will ever be available, for 1,000 years, 1 million, or a thousand of the latter.

  The study only includes the fuel rods used for nuclear energy production not the plants themselves ..
  The entire plants are toxic waste that on decommission must be careful dissembled and disposed of for the next hundred thousand years or more .None of it is recyclable . The accident at Fukushima made every single thing toxic waste for a 20km radius around it .
  With solar they include everything right up to the concrete holding up the stand the panels are bolted to and ignore the what is left after a panels life can be recycled safely and easily.
  
  Which would you rather have a pile of used circuit boards or a bucket of radioactive waste under your bed?

      Commercial Nuclear is a dead industry no more plants no use for the steel from decommissioned ones .
      On March 29, 2017 Toshiba’s Westinghouse filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing a yearly loss for Toshiba that could exceed $9 billion, almost three times its previous estimate.
      
      We have no safe long term storage faculty for spent nuclear fuel and waste.

Come all you bad employers out there the Labour Leader and serial Liar is coming after you. Little has also promised to raise the minimum wage by seventy five cents go $15.75 and hopes to increase it to $20.20 over time. He also will keep the 90 day employment trial but will go after bad employers and will lift wages to give people a slice of the the pie and let them have a better life. So really what he is saying is we will return to union control again to make employers pay better wages. I am pretty sure Jack5 will give his stamp of approval as this is a copy of Jack5 economic plan.

    If the Catholic Church had dealt with the alleged crimes when they occurred and gave their young victims a fair go, you might have a case.
    
    But these matters were not only swept out of view, victims were branded as liars, trouble makers, etc.
    For decades, the church denied, obfuscated, conspired, colluded and generally stalled any proceedings against offending clergy.
    
    Those folks who were abused as young children have a right to know that those who offended against them haven’t got away scot free.

      I am sympathetic both ways. I don’t deny the horrendous crimes against children and having encountered such abuse myself, but not by church people, I know the lasting memories.
      
      The quality of evidence though is a real concern. False memories can be implanted and legal truth is not meant to be subjective. It used to be said that it was better for a guilty person to be go free than an innocent person be convicted wrongly. It’s a value judgement and we may never agree.
      Statutes of limitations vary among jurisdictions and 12 years was a main limit in my past. A view has emerged that no crime should be be left unpunished because of time passing and the nature of the crime being too awful ever to be possibly allowed to escape. That’s valid but at a serious risk of possible injustice.
      
      The rules of justice should be applied consistently over time but where the quality of evidence is compromised that may not be possible. I do not believe that a criminal that escapes the formal state legal processes is ever freed from guilt; they still have to personally live with that. It may be that they never offend again and may be partly rehabilitated.
      
      Victims can never be compensated but the law as retribution does not do that and may abuse the victims even more. If one of the abusers in my youth was now called to account that would be horrendous for me.
      
      Let time heal and let vigilance be awake. We are surely aware of what should be carefully watched over. The children alleged to be abused by Church Fathers should have been revealed earlier. There may be an informal case against the institution and a great deal more rigorous oversight operative in future.

Perhaps a drug, chemical, biological, nuclear or something shipment that they want to have “vanish” off the records and hope that countries get panicky about the amount of stuff stuck on the ships and just unload and ship to destinations with only cursory checking….
Or am I just being paranoid?

  It is not a closed system. If wages go up there is more spending power because of the multiplier effect. The problem is, if wages go up without an increase in productivity prices have to rise as well so the gains to labour are limited. The other problem is alternative ways of getting things done ( ie investing in technology ) become more economic so the demand for labour falls.
  You cant fight the market in the long term and the market determines the price of everything including labour. I presume the paychecks in the 538 piece fell because hours worked fell.

    Employ all your staff on the minimum wage which is fixed, and then give them ‘monthly bonuses’ if the business performs well.
    
    Paying staff a yearly rate simply sees them slack off until they have another incentive. Speaking from experience, if I wasn’t paid ‘considerably more’ than other staff for doing ‘considerably more’ work —– then I simply done as least as possible. Bonuses take care of that problem.
    
    Business owners and managers need to pick up their act in Australia and NZ, productivity is pathetic.

It won’t stop Fletch, yet I agree it is likely to prejudice a fair trial. If that’s the case then it is up to the legal system to sort out.

But back to the public. You wonder, I suspect honestly, why Pell is the target of their invective. I suggest that the man in the street has witnessed the church protecting wayward priests after they have abused the kids they have been entrusted with.

The church obfuscates, dodges, denies & prevaricates to protect itself & its priests. People have effectively said “enough….we’ve finally got one of the slippery bastards in sight….let’s go.”

Ethereum seems to be creating most excitement in the blockchain currency field, pioneered by Bitcoin.

The rush is such that Ethereum “miners” are pushing up the price of mid-range graphics (yes graphics) cards as they beef up their computers’ computations as they work on creating the Ethereum.
