  According to James Shaw they are still deciding on the proportionality of exotics and native trees, erosion, land availability etc and other can kicking exercises. I predict there won’t be a single extra seedling planted this year over and above the planting schedule set up by the National Government. Millions of dollars spent but not a single extra tree in the ground.

  So I hosted my English aunt for a night while she was over here and I knew she was anti-Brexit. Something came up on the news about it and she grumbled. Then the next news item was either something about Trump or Hillary. To my surprise she hated Hillary calling her “corrupt” and moaned how the media picked on Trump all the time in the UK and “all the ladies in her group thought the same.” It seems the pomey media has shot it’s credibility over Trump as well.     Concerning those who want to go back ‘inside’.
    
    Not an unusual phenomenon unfortunately. Most of the ‘long termer’s’ know nothing else; ‘Prison’ is their family, so when things get ‘tough’ (by their standards), they go ‘home’; back inside.
    
    Perhaps unsually (at least to Kiwi eyes), in England it is a seasonal phenomenon, especially amongst the old hands. Although they have somehow managed to survive ‘outside’ for Spring, Summer and Autumn, for these people (nvariably male and elderly), Winter is coming, and with it the cold, the damp and the distinct possibility of death through hyperthermia. Better to beat up a Bobby and get (warm) free board, food and lodging, than risk death by exposure or starvation. Many Magistrates (the ‘Judges’ who deal with such matters) recognise this and accommodate the ‘implied’ request.
    
    No doubt it also happens in New Zealand; certainly I have heard tales of the Swaggies doing such things, although that generation is now long gone and the ‘Kings of the road’ seem to be no more.

      What a shame that the crimes that result in imprisonment are so bad for the victims, prison will be even harder to achieve if Andy gets his way.
      
      And no I do no think that prison is a deterrent to committing crime, but it is a relief for the public and victims in some measure.

        I hear that Angry Andrew is looking at residential halfway houses where criminals who do not meet the criteria for imprisonment will be housed.
        
        I know a couple who purchased a property in a nice area for a high price. Several months later a halfway house for drug addicts was opened up just down the street and house values dropped like a stone.

      Not sure they can get away with half a litre a day, we had a guy drink a litre a day many years ago, my boss at the time said he would kill himself in a year, he was spot on the money. The other thing pointed out me at the time, the dirty dozen in the front bar drinking eye washers of beer would get very fat, but live forever. Spirits can kill very quickly in large amounts.

‘At least one non-male’: Wellington venue knocks back metal band in the name of diversity

A Wellington rock band have been refused a gig at an indie venue because they don’t feature “at least one non-male”.

Rory McDonald, 17, said Caroline, in Manners St in the central city, told him his four-piece alt-metal band Lucifer Gunne did not fit the venue’s diversity quota.

He sent a message saying: “I’m wondering why there is a requirement for one non-male member, could you please elaborate?”

Anika Moa agreed with Caroline’s policy, saying it made sense to have more female musicians in festival and club lineups.

  Anika Moa recently has a gig cancelled because the evangelical Christian group involved did not agree with her sexuality, and that is just as bas as this.
  
  It’s one thing to push for diversity, but shouldn’t the foundation of diversity be acceptance that not everyone should conform to your ideals?
  
  Kiwibloggers with a good memory or good search engine will know I was wholeheartedly in support of Carve barbers who made a decision to only open for Men. I still support their right to do so.
  
  But this goes beyond an issue about the provisions of goods and services. A young band, starting out, has few opportunities to grow an audience, particularly in New Zealand. To deny this group this opportunity simply because they “did not have one Female or one Non-Male” (to use the venues words….) is disgusting and must be actionable by the HRC. These are 17 year old young men trying to make their way in the world, who are facing a roadblock for no other reason than they are men.
  
  Given what happened to Anika Moa, she should come out against this policy and promote acceptance, in all its forms.

Sullivan took over as the presiding judge after District of Columbia Judge Rudolph Contreras was recused from the case on Dec. 7. There was no explanation as to why Contreras, who presided over Flynn’s guilty plea on Dec. 3, was recused from the case. Flynn pled guilty to one count of lying to the FBI, despite testimony provided to Congress by former FBI Director James Comey, where he stated that the agents did not believe Flynn had lied about his conversation with former Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in December 2016.

Sullivan ordered the government to produce any evidence in its possession that is “favorable to defendant and material either to defendant’s guilt or punishment.”

I am having difficulty understanding Cindy’s travel ban on diplomats expelled from other countries and what message she is trying to send to whom.

On the face of it, the ban purports to respect the countries whose diplomatic hospitality was abused by those expelled by engaging in nefarious activities, ie spying. The theory is that if the other countries don’t want them then we should respect that decision.
That, of course, is bullshit. They were expelled for no reason other than they were Russian diplomats and Russia is presently persona non grata in countries that frown upon alleged state orchestrated murder or attempts thereof.
Here are some theories about her possible messages:
1. I am out of my depth and have no idea what to do but I must do something.
2.Winston has painted us into a corner with Russia and its time to dust off the cover of Advanced Weasel Words for Slippery Politicians, 3rd Edition.
3. We do not believe Theresa May and until she publicises all her intelligence we will take the view that Russia is blameless.

  Remember the GFC? Foreign banks were grouping likely bad debts amongst other assets they put up for sale as a package. To get rid of them, and then they used the funds raised to buy assets of other banks (who were also grouping their bad debts into a package of assets they were puting up for sale). Thus all were dealing with their emerging bad debts in the same way, merely swapping their own for those of other institutions. And thus none of them escaped the GFC.
  
  The Russians expelled from country a go to country b those expelled from country b go to country c, those from country c go to country d etc and etc.

        The cabbage trees should be producing ripe fruit now…and that will be keeping a number of bird species happy.
        
        I’ve located a paper from Botany Div. scientists that documents double flowering in some of the cabbage trees they were growing.

        Cabbage trees should withstand a decent drowning…and that could explain the 2nd flowering…the warm temperatures and abundant water would have allowed for the formation and expansion of the flowering spikes.
        
        However, some plants do a last gasp of putting all their energy (sugars) into reproductive effort when they are on their last legs….. Watch to see whether it puts out new shoots later in the year… or starts to die off.

Isn’t this a bit of a truth-adjacent? Did Clare Curran do the comms on this announcement about the investigation into MBIE using private investigators?

On 16 March, State Services Commissioner Peter Hughes announced the terms of reference and appointed Deputy State Services Commissioner Doug Martin to conduct the investigation.

This is the guy doing the investigation Doug Martin, Director of MartinJenkins – onmi-present Wellington public sector consultants. And assuredly a good (old, white, male) person to do the job.

Admittedly, in the early 1990s Doug Martin was the Deputy State Services Commissioner, but to suggest that a quarter of a century later he is a current Deputy Commissioner is, well, odd.

It would be like referring to the PM as the “fish and chip girl”, or the DPM as bright young star of the National party. Sir Paul Reeves, Governor General. Steve Smith, respected Australian cricket captain.

I see that Keith Murdoch has died.
Keith Murdoch, famously known as the only All Black to be sent home from a tour for indiscipline, died on Friday aged 74.

His sister confirmed the news of his death to Newshub, while his former Dunedin club, Zingari-Richmond, flew their flag at half mast on Good Friday to acknowledge his passing.

Jesus wasn’t white: he was a brown-skinned, Middle Eastern Jew. Here’s why that matters

I grew up in a Christian home, where a photo of Jesus hung on my bedroom wall. I still have it. It is schmaltzy and rather tacky in that 1970s kind of way, but as a little girl I loved it. In this picture, Jesus looks kind and gentle, he gazes down at me lovingly. He is also light-haired, blue-eyed, and very white.

The problem is, Jesus was not white.

You’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise if you’ve ever entered a Western church or visited an art gallery. But while there is no physical description of him in the Bible, there is also no doubt that the historical Jesus, the man who was executed by the Roman State in the first century CE, was a brown-skinned, Middle Eastern Jew.

This is not controversial from a scholarly point of view, but somehow it is a forgotten detail for many of the millions of Christians who will gather to celebrate Easter this week.

What are we to make of this? 🙂
