(14 May 2018) Investors must back ‘green’ companies or risk huge losses from climate change, the Bank of England has warned.

Efforts to stop global temperatures from climbing to dangerous levels require substantial changes to the structure of the economy, rendering older technologies worthless and rewarding companies that are more environmentally friendly.

The switch from old to new could come suddenly, Bank executive director Sarah Breeden said, meaning investors risk being wiped out if they are not well prepared.

“Once climate change becomes a clear and present danger, it may already be too late,” she told the Green Finance Initiative and Green Finance Committee in London.

The science is irrefutable the evidence unambiguous: on the present path disruptive climate change is inevitable. No scientific institution or society on Earth says otherwise.

“But we know better,” say fossil fuels’ useful idiots like Simon Bridges and Kiwiblog’s dreary deniers.

    So watcha doing about it?
    
    You know, when I see a warming concerned politician boarding a plane to Europe, I don’t think :
    
    “hey, isn’t global warming something we should do something about right now”
    
    I think:
    
    “weapons grade wanker”
    
    Because, if it’s just business as usual, then what does it matter what we believe? And where is the analysis that shows if we do action x, then temperature drops by Y, and the cost is Z?
    
    It seems to me it’s all just poncing about, doing some showpony incremental stuff like objecting to plastic bags, growing a beard, banning gas exploration thus shifting to imports, and riding a bicycle on a sunny day occasionally.
    
    Isn’t the whole point a marked reduction in consumption? Or, don’t we do much at all, apart from acting all concerned?

      The point I’m making is that a scientific genius like Hawking might just have a better understanding of the issues than the rest of us.
      We should treat others with respect, but if their “viewpoint” is leading to the destruction of our planet, should that viewpoint not be challenged (politely 🙂 )?

      Because those useless parents are constantly told that is how life is and there are plenty of support systems out there to assist them. How about we change the message to one of personal responsibility. If you don’t make an effort to help your own situation that assistance will instead only target those who do NOT expect constant handouts.

      Good question. Apparently the Australians are trying to target assistance so that it goes directly to children rather than to their parents – ie uniform vouchers, sports vouchers, medical checks at school, free lunches in lower economic areas etc.
      
      Meanwhile back in NZ one family I know of are going to have more income each week because they qualify. Of course Dad’s extra income from selling pot to half the neighbourhood isn’t taken into account.

      The elephant in the room most of us don’t dare talk about is that the worst bludgers/producers of cash cows believe that there is something incredible and miraculous about pushing out umpteen kids to a life of neglect.
      (While mum and dad sit around boozing and fagging, interspersed with trips to the pub and pokies. )
      The only cure IMHO is a large injection of cash for contraceptive measures to counteract this mindset.

  Two people who won’t be locked up are Hosking & Hawkesby who are covering a wedding in a foreign country, which in the case of Ms Kate is the ever changing, excruciating gossip surrounding the family of the bride.
  Personally I’ll be glad when the budget and the wedding are over with.

    Looks as though National’s speaking order will be Bridges (first speaker in the Budget Debate), followed by Amy Adams and Judith Collins. Ms Collins has tweeted that she is looking forward to speaking early in the Budget Debate.
    
    It will be a great opportunity for Bridges to lay into Ardern, Robertson, Twyford and co without interruption, and without smarmy answers to questions. Winston Peters will be unable to ask patsy supplementary questions to get the PM off the hook when she is under pressure.

      A Ioane has freakish talent. Needs direction and focus – has a bully streak which needs to be channelled.
      R Ioane is the first winger picked
      amazing at the talent Hansen has to squeeze into the backline.
      Impossible to leave out Ben Smith
      Back three of J Barrett, R Ioane and B Smith sees quality players such as Naholo, Nehe, Dagg, Savea to name the incumbents and potential newcomers such as B Lam etc all on the sideline.

  The economy is still going well, which Labour will take full credit for and claim this clearly justifies the god-awful budget they are about to deliver.
  
  Everything in this budget will be about taking money from people who make an effort and reward those that don’t. It will be a little bit here, a little bit there, but will quickly add up.

    There isn’t a dollar that National has saved/made, that Labour can’t spend.
    National got part/most of the way to learning that, it’s not the Govt.s money, it OURS, the tax payers.
    Labour’s ingrained philosophy, is that it is THEIR money (who ever they have on parliament at the time). to SPEND as they please and what pleases them the most is reelection, into the position of power they crave so much.
    A belief, that being in charge only means, you get to tell people what to do.

      Boom. The comment around the perception of Labour pollies that tax is something they are entitled to and is “theirs” is something that frustrates the hell out of me.
      I want my government to spend the money they tax me wisely and with restraint. I dont want to support their schemes that make them feel like they are compassionate and good people. This life is tough – rely on yourself and the goverment is there to help if it goes wrong. It is not a lifestyle choice.
      Alas this message is lost on left leaning politicians.
      The belief they know best is staggering given that most of them lead very sheltered and idealistic existences.

I’m bored. I feel so bored with the Government. So bored with the Opposition. So bored with the shambles that just rolls out everyday and makes me feel — bored.
Do you think this was the masterplan of the new incumbents? To bore us all into submission?
If that was their aim they have succeeded. F**K it, I think I’ll just vote Labour next time.
Because the Opposition are just so f * * * * * * g boring. But the endless trivia, soundbites, and committees that pass for governance apparently right-minded people, even more boring.
But they have really nailed it haven’t they?

I almost feel like Labour are showing a level of competence in being uninspiring and boring that the Opposition appear unable to counter it with even a smattering of pizazz.

Anyone else see Garner this morning twist Amy ‘s words on the DIA Child exploitation team change? She stated that they have reduced the number of trained investigators by 1/3rd and hired lots of educators. He claimed that she stated overall numbers were reduced by a third and called it out as a lie.
Well at least he has given the CoL a way to provide their 1800 new police now… hire a number of educators into the police force and state that the numbers of police have gone up…

One of the main contributory factors of the Global Financial Crises – was called Prime Mortgage.
This is where the stupid Socialist Governments – Clinton and Obama ensured that people could get a mortgage even if they had no money to pay the mortgage. They legislatively bankrupted the two main Mortgage providers Freddy Mack and Fanny May who did not have the money – they were told to go borrow from the financial markets.
Many cities say in Obama’s territory of South West Chicago are empty now ghettos.

  Apparently it is 2nd mortgage money they are talking about which is at the most risk of course. I cannot see the banks funding 2nd mortgages. When I had one in the 70’s it had to be done via second tier lenders

      In fairness, that’s not what Twyford and Co. are mulling over – i.e. providing entry to one of his ‘KiwiBuild’ houses without a deposit.
      
      As I understand it, the new ‘owner’ would still need to put up a significant amount of the pre-mortgage cost (i.e. the deposit) of the so-called “affordable home”, and the Government would put up the rest of the deposit, thereby taking up ‘part-ownership’ of the property. If that’s correct, the ‘owner-in-residence’ could not simply walk away cost-free when he/she/they felt like it; they would be losing any benefit of their part of the original down-payment, plus their money spent on servicing the mortgage each month.
      
      But there are also risks for Government (i.e. taxpayer) in these kinds of financing arrangements. The first 18 dwellings in Twyford’s KiwiBuild scheme (homes presently under construction near Takanini / Papakura) – have projected prices of $579,000 to $649,000. Given the area and the density of construction, one has to wonder whether the ‘market’ in 5 years’ time will be prepared to pay re-sale prices of (say) 20% higher for those properties; i.e. prices of $695k to $780k.

There is an air of absolute desperation starting to grip the COL as this problem along with so many others that they have “manufactured” are beyond them completely. We watch with some pleasure as more observers who claim to “know” stuff are finally saying things like the COL has over promised.
  The majority knew that before the election but now we all have to all walk the “trail of many fears” because there is a secret agreement that apparently aggregates the separate COL members promises. So there will be TAX, TAX,TAX and borrowing.
zero achieved in the first 6 months, zero prospect of achievement in the future.
In short, they are tearing down the structure already built and will start redeveloping the Bomb crater of 2008.

  @RW Capitalist what an absolute kick in the guts for so many hard working Kiwi’s who made such big investments of their efforts to get that result. Some modest pay back was coming in the tax cuts but more importantly the healthy state of the economy meant increased targeted spending could be allocated to address the biggest voter concerns. It is now rapidly being trashed in such a cavalier spend thrift way that have already wasted the reserves and so much more.

Auckland shitty treated me to an especially lucid Indian taxi driver yesterday. He held forth on how he came to NZ with a visa to work as a dishwasher, he got injured and lived on ACC for six months. He doesnt like working for a boss so drives for Uber. All of his friends and family have moved to Australia once they got NZ citizenship, but he doesn’t want to because NZ has ACC, benefits if you don’t (won’t) work and cheap education.

We are so fucked.

      New Zealand needs a population base, the same size as Australia…around 20 million.
      We will then have a domestic economy, big enough to generate it’s own “heat”/growth.
      We will be big enough to be taken seriously in this world, not just indulged/tolerated.
      Of course there will be problems getting there.
      Growing into our “new shoes”.
      Infrastructure
      Housing
      Delay before jobs & growth catch up with demand
      etc etc
      But the benefits of the challenge and success, will leave our grand kids and great grand kids a phenomenal advantage in the future.
      or are we only concerned with ourselves?
      Maybe that’s why the CoL were elected and why they are asking “What can I get out of this budget?”
      Not what can WE get?
      Not what long term gain is there?
      What direction, to improve the lot of the people following me?
      Labour are aiming at the budget for the selfish.
      Something they always accused National of.

        More than likely 1 million emigrants from there could happen every year or 2.
        Very helpful as they may send remittances back to others in their home country.
        
        Why do we value arable land? No one wants to buy our apples, etc. unless it is novelty or cheap. Tarriffs will be used against most products.
        Tarriffs are not put on wool, yet anything that is higher added value, carpet, mats, clothes, then runs the risk of a tarriff, that greatly affects the capital risk.
        Kiwifruit can be grown elsewhere. I do not think that more people eating fancy cheese, wine, kiwifruit feijoa liquors, or apple/pear ciders etc, unless the higher end of tourist.
        
        Pukekohe Class 1 lands will simply be another suburbia. Bombay hills will be valued by the views for housing.
        
        What maybe happening is the “replacement society”.
        The ones who can will move on, like to work in Australia, Europe, USA. Emirates etc,
        Then othes move on to retire elsewhere, then bring in others, to drive taxis, hospital nurses and doctors.
        
        More halal products to be made and consumed in NZ, making for a better tourist destination for some.
        Yet I see and hear how tourists marvel at being alone on a West Coast beach, yet now selfish me have in recent years seen the numbers increase, at peak time. Not yet crowded, but the atmosphere changes, from when I first took tourists, to easily accessible sites.
        Will we complete the climb of Mount Fujiyama having most of the time getting the view of some one’s backside.
        
        In some parts I agree with you, as how to lift parts of our own here, to educate, to aspire.
        To do that in putting in the foundations, of building for their families, in education, health, and technology.
        
        For myself and NZ I am wary of going down to the lowest common denominator.

        For getting on for half a century, NZ has not been able to export enough to pay for the imports people need.
        
        The latest population surge is going to push up our deficit, and if you want to see what that can do look at what’s happening in Argentina right now. Its currency has fallen more than 20 per cent against the US dollar this month.
        
        While Treasury oafs, politicians, and banksters have rabbiting on about GDP growth, our GDP per capita, which is what counts, has been virtually static because of the flood of people into the country. And while our Government debt is reasonable, our private debt is quite high.
        
        NZ still relies on primary product exports – agriculture, forestry, fishing – and on tourism. The latest wave of immigration has done nothing to increase them.
        
        If, by some magic, you could immediately increase the NZ population to 20 million, then New Zealand would be much more like Bangladesh than like Australia.

        No, India is a big place with significant cultural variation by place and caste. But my experience over many years is that Many Indian husbands (especially if relatively new immigrants) do have significant culturally assigned power over their wives.
        
        My wife worked with one who didn’t (initially) have a drivers license because her husband would not allow her to get one – and she wouldn’t dream of getting one without his permission. Not much later she did get one though because he saw the advantage of having her being able to drive. But that was his decision, not hers.
        
        There can be quite a lot of control asserted, and by Mothers-in-Law as well. And it is entirely cultural.

Went to one of the graduation ceremonies for Massey University yesterday and while being nice it was also a bit of an eye opener.
Every year the Marsden Fund hands out research grants to academics for study purposes and usually some of the more bizarre ones are ridiculed here on KB.
Well I can assure readers that this is not only confined to the Marsden Fund as after listening to what some of the students did their PhD research in I didn’t know whether to laugh or feel sad that such nonsense would have taxpayer money spent on it.
There were quite a few that fell into the “dubious” category in my reckoning but the following one took the cake I reckon.
“Within a neoliberal era, women are assumed to have achieved sexual liberation and equality.
However research suggests that women’s efforts in doing or fulfilling their sexual desires remain confined by gendered performativity, being more about looking desirable or performing desire over feeling it.
While there were points of resistance, women’s desire remained a gendered performance that served men’s desires and pleasures with those that failed at femininity understanding themselves as deficit or disordered.
The research examined the gendered power relations that constrain women’s bodies as well as emphasising the importance of attending to these issues and opening spaces for women’s desire”.

So there you have it whatever the $%&$ all that means.

There’s a good reason why so many people have so little trust in anything said by Left/liberals. It’s because they lie, cheat, and manipulate without any ethics or integrity to get their own way – usually specifically what the majority of others don’t want.

You could use any example from the current government, but two typical examples from the UK include:

1. Professor Michael Arthur from University College London, who chairs the Russell Group of elite universities EU group, had claimed that UK seats of learning would plunge from second best in the world league table on research behind America to 20th. But pressed on the claim during a Brexit committee hearing in the Commons, Professor Arthur said: “I will confess I plucked a number out of the air.” [He said with amusement.]

2. Student Union leaders of the same universities insisting that there should be a second referendum because it supposedly isn’t fair that those who have ‘come of age’ to vote since the last one weren’t included. They also claim to represent the ‘million’ such students, without anything to suggest that this is true.

It may seem smart to people at the time to behave like this – tell outrageous, manipulative lies to sway the public. It’s not so funny when the public no longer accepts ‘evidence’ on climate change or any other issue as being necessarily credible because no-one can be trusted anymore.

  I would have thought EAD TWO, that the experienced Royal Family and “The Palace” would have had a substantial risk management plan for the Markle lot’s visit to the UK for this wedding:
  Bring them into the country quietly a couple weeks beforehand.
  Keep them holed up in some flash but discrete accommodation with plenty of minders to stave off the media and control random acts of idiocy.
  Give them what they need to stay calm and co-operative eg: alcohol, recreational drugs, posh clothes, a new watch and other “ entertainments”.
  Make them feel welcome and “responsible.”

        True. That’s why I mentioned the cities and should have added ‘some of the more educated people’. I knew many far more traditional Turks who had come to Germany to work. Very nasty to women: one family was trying to send the teenage daughter off to be married in a country she had never seen (Turkey). She had to run away from home to escape her family!

I think this is one of dpf’s pro national stories, trying to show youth crime trending down under national. When in actual fact it has been trending upward over recent years.

Do the studies differentiate between crime and offending? Surely these would be highly correlated anyway.

Who knows what is true? This is why you cannot trust statistics.

They’re completely committed to dragging everyone down to the lowest common denominator and keeping them there, all the time – and where anyone does lift themselves out of the mire, shooting them down in flames because it’s all ‘identity’. Toyota’s doing okay.

For its financial year ended March 31, it has reported a profit of 2.49 trillion yen, which my calculator converts to 3.27 billion NZ dollars.

Sales jumped 36 per cent, helped by a weaker yen, to 29.4 trillion yen – 38.6 billion NZ dollars.

By units sold in 2017, Toyota was third in the world. It followed Volkswagen Group and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi.

Interesting article in Stuff yesterday about Gloriavale subsidies. If it wasnt for 3 million in subsidies they get each year from the government, they would be out of business with an operating deficit of 1.7M a year.
My question is – Why the fuck are we subsidising a cult? My business isn’t subsidised to run at a profit, if I don’t pay tax the IRD would shut me down and prosecute.

A community like Gloriavale is only sustainable if it has a positive cash flow. It pulled in about $17.2 million in the year to July, 2017 and spent about $15m. In the final result it posted a surplus of $1.2m.

It owns 13 companies that operate businesses in farming, honey, building and midwifery and they seem mostly to be successful.

A company called Ocean Harvest International has tax losses of $4.4m, but this is not necessarily a sign the company is in strife.

The trust got $1.65m in donations from its members, $2.1m in early childhood education grants and another $224,000 in grants from the Ministry of Education. According to the accounts, without the taxpayer grants, Gloriavale would be running at a loss.

  Those using it on a bigger scale than Gloriavale include Seventh Day Adventists for their Sanitarium Food Products, and Ngai Tahu and Waikato Maori for their many businesses in several industries.

  2. Did Auckland Council require Penny to agree (as a condition of the application) that Auckland Council’s expenses in connection with the now-aborted High Court sale would be recoverable as part of the postponed rates?
  
  3. What does Penny propose to do with the GiveaLittle donation money now that it won’t be spent for the original purpose (rates payment)? Is there an overseas anti-corruption conference coming up?

        The Judge commented on Penny being terminally ill. She has been described as having stage 3 ovarian cancer. That is defined as the cancer cells having spread to the lymph glands where they can be distributed to other body systems. That is typically dealt with with chemo if possible. There is a severe risk of an inoperable tumour appearing.

Yesterday I took heat for being ‘racist’ because I dared to criticise Nikki Haley and her positions on H1B Visa scamming.

I’m sorry, but the phenomenon of ‘Indian Americans’ is just as bad for western values as ‘Hispanic Americans’.

Indians are even less supportive of free speech then Hispanics. Which makes sense when you think about Hindu nationalism and a society characterised by caste.

Nikki Haley would happily destroy the statutes of the founding fathers if she could get away with it.

They run Microsoft, Adobe, PepsiCo, Nokia and DARPA, just to name a few. Guess how many Europeans can get senior positions in those companies.

I’m sorry, but you have no conception of how difficult it is as a young person trying to get passed iron-clad diversity laws that discriminate against you for ‘white privilege’ and ‘male privilege’. These laws are administrated in large part by Indians, who uniformly vote left, and support the destruction of western institutions which are the only reason they’re even allowed into western countries.

You need to start re-examining your first principles. Because your sons and daughters are facing the reality of these situations and it’s nothing like what you said it was.
