  My main issue with this is that you had 24 hours to come up with this and it just wasn’t all that funny . There was a couple of decent jabs in there – the Chinese script was good but the rest was very ordinary. The left do struggle with memes and humour in general I guess

        From what I understand there has been plenty of polling data for the Senate races whereas this has not been true for the House races.
        
        As such, the prediction for the House of Representatives is a lot more tenuous; Nate Silver has even admitted effectively a “I don’t know” in the last few days.
        
        That’s not to say the Democrats won’t win the House; they’ve raised a lot more money than the Republicans.

        Colinxy: Yeah, there are too many house races for there to be good (public) polling. Plus asking a respondent “which state do you live in?” is more likely to get an accurate answer than “which congressional district do you live in?” — many don’t know.
        
        My understanding of the model is that they mostly look at the generic ballot polls (which is effectively measuring popular vote) either nation-wide or state-wide and use that to compute a swing. Then for each district you take the result from last time, add the swing, and see who wins.
        
        That’s probably the best model you can use with with the data available, but it leaves a lot to be desired.

      OK, I’ve already made a prediction and I’ve based it on a comparison with 2016. There is an enthusiasm gap as I see it plus the “shy tory” effect to factor in. I predict that the GOP will increase their seats in the senate to 56-57 and also hold the House with a smaller margin of around +10 – so a small loss of seats but not enough to flip control.
      
      The intriguing bone for me is Florida Governor, it seems rather strange that Gillum is doing so well given that he is under direct FBI investigation for bribery and corruption, and with what has come out so far it seems that he has indeed committed several offenses. He may win – it’s very close and like 2016 there’s a definite unsurveyed pro-Trump vote out there, but whether it is enough isn’t clear.
      
      I don’t think that the pollsters have done enough yet to remove the bias from the methods.
      
      And I freely admit that this includes a bit of guesswork on my part, but we’ll see.

        I think that outcome is entirely plausible. Republicans have significant advantages and could easily keep the house and make senate gains. Basically, if the blue wave doesn’t show up (or only shows up in safe blue areas), then republicans will win.
        
        The enthusiasm gap was talked about a lot a few months ago, but I haven’t heard much about it since. I assume both sides are motivated.

        Florida is important because the Governor is able to influence the redrawing of Electoral areas.
        Which is about to happen there.
        Given Floridas influence in the Presidential Election winning the gubernatorial race is very important.
        Gillum is useless too. His mayoralty has been a disaster.
        He won’t be good for Florida

        The so called blue wave may be more media / pundit wishful thinking , the bias is palpable.
        
        I think the anti Kavanaugh hysteria and the pro caravan rhetoric from the same crowd may actually help to produce a red reaction , but that’s more a hope on my part and I freely admit my bias.
        
        Having said that there is a reaction going on against the Left Establishment agenda in other parts of the world relating to migration /crime etc Austria , Sweden, Germany, Italy, Poland and Hungary being examples.
        
        I also note that the media are trying to actively discredit the Grenfell Towers Guy folk and yet the excessive police reaction to this “crime” is also only helping to energise the WTF is going on mood.

      Not everybody tells the truth.
      Many Rep don’t talk about being Rep because the left are nut jobs who will attack them for their beliefs.
      They go about their day not expressing their support for the president.
      There are predictions that shift those 538 figures past the margin of error due to this reason.
      Polling is also predicted to more likely poll a Dem than a Rep candidate.
      As in 2016 this is not a Poll, popular vote system. Dems may get 80% in many areas with Reps getting only 51% wins. The Reps still win.
      
      Interesting day ahead.

      I don’t know why they are downticking you either, even if they think your prediction is wrong. It isn’t as if anyone knows for sure what is going to happen.
      
      I would say that the polling methods used are the same ones that predicted a 97% chance of victory for Clinton, and I’m not convinced the pollsters have figured out what went wrong or how to compensate for it. I suspect the polls may be inaccurate and I think it much more likely that they are underestimating republican support than the other way around. I have no idea how things are going to go. However my opinions are as follows.
      
      On the pro-republican side: the economy over there is doing well. Trump has NOT turned out to be the “literally Hitler” disaster that the screaming left predicted which has made them all look silly. The Kavanaugh thing has left a bad taste in everyone’s mouths and motivated the right. And the left has mired itself even more in socialism and identity politics precisely as the popular zeitgeist swings against these things.
      
      On the pro-democrat side: The marginal seats in this election are mostly republican which in theory means it is easier for the democrats to make gains. And the Hillary isn’t around so democrats don’t have to hold their noses and swallow their bile quite so much when they go to vote this time.
      
      How these factors will balance out – I have NO idea.

    I once had faith in Silver – until 2016. Now I am cautious, and I remind myself and others that, almost without exception (Roosevelt in the 40s the last?) the party of the sitting President looses House and Senate seats at mid terms. So it is not – whatever way to outcome falls this year – a referendum on Trump.
    Of course the Ardern/Greenie mob and the Dems will it spin it as an “anti-Trump” vote.

      Bush in 2002 is an exception to the midterm rule.
      
      538 basically called 2016 a tossup (about 70%-30% from memory) when everyone else was saying Clinton had in the bag. I think that’s pretty good and you couldn’t have predicted better using the data available. You’re not going to stop listening to the weather forecast because it rained when they said there’s only a 30% chance of rain.

        Colinxy: Ultimately, the polling data consistently pointed to Clinton being ahead. So any scientific method will have favoured Clinton. Any prediction that favoured Trump would have been based on gut feeling, which is not scientific or reliable.
        
        30% is a high level of uncertainty. I give 538 credit for not being over-confident and doing a good job quantifying uncertainty in 2016.

        538 were accurate in the overall vote. It was the three seats in the Midwest they got wrong, a total of 150,000 votes made all the difference. Clinton’s “deplorables” statement was enough to tip those states.
        Simple rule, never insult the voters, they might be wanting to vote for you. Her husband would never have have made such an elementary error.
        But as she herself said, campaigning was not really her thing, governing was . Only problem is that you have to campaign successfully in order to govern.

      Silver was somewhat overrated. In 2008 and 2012, he summed the swing state polls and said Obama would win but his technique fell to bits when we learnt that people who would turn up and vote Trump weren’t in the swing state polls. No polling had Trump winning Michigan, Pennsylvania or Wisconsin.

      (1) Pollsters may have done things to try to compensate for the so-called “shy tory” effect.
      
      (2) In 2012, it was democrats that outperformed the polls, so I’m not convinced that the polls always favour dems just because they did in 2016. Historically the polling errors have gone both ways.

    The higher the turnout the bigger the disappointment of the Dems.
    
    I predict more or less no change, a small chance of the house flipping, but as Dems have no policy other than “OMG TDS” and they are modelling a new form of anti-American fascism – the likelihood is that ordinary, decent Americans will begin the drift away from them – they’re ignoring slick Willy’s wise words that “It’s the economy stupid”.         There is a strong turning movement afoot. How did we ever get the COL? This is not representative govt. You cannot have a random sample from a population as an executive government. They need representatives of regions not thoughts.

  The House is up for grabs. Even Nate Silver has revised his prediction via Twitter:
  
  “I’m not at all convinced there’s movement nationally toward Democrats—the generic ballot has been very flat. But, they may be closing well in swing districts because of their big spending advantage, which ought to be a bit scary for R’s.”

    I don’t think money buys elections. I don’t like the weight placed on fundraising.
    
    The generic ballot is not a great indicator because it effectively measures popular vote, not who will win each district. It’s only good for detecting trends. I think democrats will win more votes for the house, but that doesn’t mean they will win the most seats due to Gerrymandering. That’s what happened in 2012.

      Money usually buys elections. It’s not a guarantee of course. Trump spent a lot less than Clinton for example.
      
      We’ve seen Krim Dotcon and Colin Craig spend a lot of money on elections and achieved little as other examples. But these seem to be the exception rather than the rule.

        To even begin to win an election you need to be noticed, which usually requires advertising yourself somehow.
        
        This doesn’t always require money, as Trump demonstrated; you can troll the left wing media to get attention.
        
        However, the common theme is you’ve got to be noticed first and foremost. In NZ, for example, it has proven quite difficult to get a truly independent party off the ground to get past the 5% threshold. The US is no exception to this requirement.

  The Republican majority in the House will increase and I would be willing to place a speculative bet in their gaining a 60 seat supermajority on the Senate. More states will have Republican Governors after the election that before. Republican majorities in state legislatures will increase.
  
  How do I know? Republicans have hugely outperformed Democrats in early voting, something that has never happened before. Republicans traditionally turn out more voters on Election Day. Trump supporters do not participate in polls and this trend has become more commonplace among traditional Republican voters. 538’s predictions, Nate Silvers, etc., etc., are utterly useless.
  
  The election is essentially already over, except for the saline flood of leftist tears. This is going to set up the most amazing 2nd half of a presidential term in American history.

  Seeing as our media are repeating CNN’s fake crap, here’s what’s more likely. House: democrats pick up 9 or 10 seats giving 226/227 out of 435.
  Senate: easy, Republicans 59 with some surprises such as New Jersey (you can’t be totally corrupt and still win) and quite likely Ohio. In the mid-West I’m picking Missouri, Indiana and North Dakota. Out east, West Virginia and quite possibly Florida. You simply can’t ignore 20/30,000 turning up to Trump rallies in the middle of nowhere day after day. Oh, did CNN not report on those?

Mr Twyford in the House yesterday gave some insight into the contract with Kiwibuild developers. He said that if Kiwibuild homes bought off the plans don’t sell, the government will buy them from the developer in terms of the underwriting agreement.

The Minister also implied that they may then be onsold at a lower price than the developer received. That sounds like a subsidy to me.

Interesting to know if the same Kiwibuild rules apply in those cases, such as having to be the primary residence for 3 years.

In locations like Wanaka where demand appears weak, why wouldn’t people wait for the government to buy unsold places and then get them at a discount.

If there is a contract in place with the Wanaka developer/s will that remain in place even if there is insufficient demand? What is the risk plan in that situation.

One of the mainstays of a Trump Rally is the chance to boo the opposition media. At some point Trump will turn to the media and point to them and say there they are, the fake news media! And the crowd will go, “BOOO!!” Then they will usually start chanting, “CNN sucks!”

Well does CNN suck? To analyse the situation for Kiwi blog readers, and so that you don’t have to, I watched a few minutes of CNN this morning. They had a panel of CNN analysts who tried to be fair-minded. Sadly they failed. That woman who masquerades as a reporter, April Ryan, could not restrain herself from mocking and insulting the president and also his press secretary Sarah Sanders. Given that April Ryan is openly rude to Sarah Sanders to her face at almost every press conference that was all a bit rich!

But here is how CNN truly sucks. They discussed as if it was a perfectly reasonable notion that the Democrats will not work with the president at all if they win the house. That the Democrats will open more investigations into this president. And that the Democrats will try and impeach this president. The only question for them was the timing. Should the Democrats impeach Donald Trump before Bob Meuller’s report comes out or afterwards?

People should realise how truly partisan this is! If Obama was in office would a CNN panel discuss for a second the possibility of impeaching this president?
And what are the grounds for impeaching President Trump? The panel admitted themselves that the economic news is very good. So what are the grounds for impeaching the president? Pursuing policies that he said on the campaign trail that he would do?

That this CNN panel of so-called analysts would matter-of-factly discuss the possibility of impeaching the president if Democrats win the house show how invested CNN is in bringing down this president by any means, fair or foul. That he is the democratically elected President of the United States does not appear to matter a jot to them.

So the conclusion of my analysis is this. CNN truly does suck.

The Employment Court has ruled that a person dismissed under the 90 day rule must be allowed to remain in the job for one week before leaving. This follows a recently appointed CEO being dismissed under the 90 day rule and being escorted off the premises. To me this seems ridiculous. If I was the Board Chair I would not want to see such a person remain in possession of keys, cheque signing authorities and other delegations – the person could be a walking time bomb.

Perhaps the Court thought that the CEO should be allowed to leave with dignity unless the employer could explain to the employee why he should immediately leave (eg suspected financial irregularities).

So Simon Bridges has put the JLR episode behind him and told the media he is not discussing it and moving on. Presumably he thinks JLR and his mates have no more decent ammo to fire. The last revelation actually showed Simon and co were trying to help JLR, despite Cam Slater claiming that National had been un-caring when JLR was briefly admitted to a mental health facility. A few employment relations ‘experts’ considered Simon had ‘mishandled’ things but the end result does not bear this out.
So JLR now has a seat in the rear corner of the Chamber and is now effectively a political zombie until his time is up in 2020. He cannot ask National anything at Question Time, his vote is meaningless, and he is only going to get the very occasional speaking slot, but then what can he talk about apart from re-hashing old issues. Meanwhile the world has moved on.

    The last Nat MP like that was Mark Blumsky. He did not fit in as a MP, despite being a reasonably successful Mayor. He knew his number was up at the following election but the Nats had a strong reason for him not to resign mid term and so he loyally sat the term out. He found it a lonely and miserable experience despite still being nominally a member of the team. JLR will find it even more so.

The government has announced it plans to spend $35 million over the next four years refurbishing 15 electric trains, extending their life by 10 years.

And – Transport Minister Phil Twyford said the electrification of the main trunk line had to be on the government’s horizon.

However Twyford himself destroys the credibility of that with –
“It may be that we skip electrification and move straight to hydrogen fuel trains, but that’s work that’s yet to be done, but we certainly want to get the bulk of KiwiRail’s operations off diesel and onto renewable sources.”

And the overall question remains –
While Genesis moves to import coal to generate energy, what percentage of power in the national grid does the Winston Ardern Government estimate will be needed as the country converts to electric cars and extends electrification of railways?

Or, as Twyford mentions hydrogen powered trains, Winston has granted a $950,000 investment to Hiringa Energy, a Taranaki company, to develop zero emission hydrogen transport fuel, but that will be from water, split into gases by electricity, while the more normal source of hydrogen, natural gas, will remain beneath their feet.

If the electricity market will be back to normal by December, why has Genesis Energy ordered four shipments totalling 120,000 tonnes of Indonesian coal to be delivered between December and February?

  I love hydrogen as a fuel. It sneaks through metal like a two year old without reigns. Powerful combustion proven with a Zeppelin–the talk of the early mid 2oth century. Also put men on the moon to decide the green cheese problem.
  
  Should be fun to design refueling stations and lightweight little bomb cases to carry it around in crowded cities. Good testing space still around Wigram.

        Why (very litigious) California has 30+ Refuelling stations. Has 30 more on the way, with a plan for a total of 100.

Live in the sticks and they are useless, and expensive.
      To make electric cars attractive to buy, 2 mums Shaw is trying to come up with schemes that will penalize buyers of lifestyle/trade vehicles versus electric cars under the pretence it is good for the country (while ignoring the impact on the economy) – an impossible pipe dream.
      Electricity supply
      NZ has more than 4 million cars, fewer than 1% are electric, NZ doesn’t have plans to provide sufficient capacity to power 4 mill vehicles – do you have any ideas when or where that capacity will come from.
      
      Added to which we have:
      1. the only government in the developed world that has embarked on an immediate programme of reducing exploration for fossil fuels without viable alternatives; and
      2. Announced transport programmes that will have even greater pressure for electricity, that will be required to come from sources we do not have yet.
      
      That is why Shaw’s dream of an electric car fleet in NZ by 2038 is rubbish.

  What’s the point of hydrogen as a fuel? You either produce it by electrolysis of water or reforming of coal gas or natural gas. It’s just a middle man which is difficult to deal with. Just power stuff directly using either electricity or fossil fuels.

Some random thoughts and observations

When I started following politics 50 years ago blue collar workers supported Labour and white collar workers supported National. Their wives usually voted the same way as the men although in my house my Mother and Father sometimes cancelled each other out. He was a white collar worker who supported Labour and she always supported the Nats.

Now it seems many of the affluent support either Labour or the Greens or both whilst many lower paid support the Nats.

A question. Has or will our Government sign up to Chinas Belt and Road Initiative. The Aussie Government seems to be concerned to sign but the Victoria Labor Government has signed an MOU.

IMHO we don’t want to get too close to the Chinese they will use and abuse us if we do.

I would rather get closer to the US and UK our traditional allies and have a foot in both their camps if the ballon goes up rather than relying on the Chinese.

  It was claimed that the Government have already signed an agreement , once again in secret, but Credlin is looking in to the claim.

  Any product must prove to be effective, degrade into safe chemicals, and not cause harm to humans using it or as consumers.
  
  On that basis it’s wrong to ban something just because it’s a pesticide of herbicide if it meets that standard.
  
  If it doesn’t then I don’t care what a persons background is. I don’t care if they have no qualifications. If it is dangerous we need to quantify the danger and decide on its use.

So NZ First will be proxy voting for Jami-Lee Ross.

Interesting take though – NZF firmly believes and encourages JLR to test his mandate with the voters of Botany, resign from Parliament and contest a by-election.

In the meantime they have accepted a request from him to proxy vote, and will exercise it on the side of the National Party. They say they are doing this as it reflects the clear mandate the Botany voters gave in electing JLR as a National candidate.

I did my usual thing and shouted at the TV telling 3 pies to go forth and multiply.

One for the IT people. I do not know enough to understand the detail being discussed but I can easily understand the implications of it. I have always thought the voting machines used in the USA had to be dodgy if there was private ownership involved. ( If they are going to be used they should be Government owned and highly regulated)
