All the while hiding it all from the ratepayers along with their appalling Transportation Dept who along with the socialists at Epop think the ratepayers are fountains of money.
        
        So no worries with house prices if they keep doing that. Just won’t be able to pay the rates.

      Only the intelligent and informed should have the right to vote.

      MLB, I lived overseas for 23 years and voted in the 1992 referendum and all elections up until 2011. As a kiwi who was still paying taxes in NZ & resident withholding tax. Just as many of you complain about ratepayers being disenfranchised in local government elections by residential renters.
      
      Remember what the cry of the Yanks were against the British in 1770, ie “no taxation without representation”.
      
      Is it not the same for kiwis abroad, still paying tax and supporting the NZ economy financially?

    At least people here with permanent resident status can vote. Over in Oz one needs to be a citizen, which means the hoards of ex Kiwis who live there and cannot become Australian eg Russell Crowe, can be ignored by the politicians.

      NZ, by international standards, is already generous allowing non-citizen permanent residents to vote. I’m not unhappy that someone on a temporary work visa can’t vote. Taxes – even tourists pay taxes (GST).

(At the risk of being accused of ‘intermittent trolling’ – Heh I can’t get that laughable assertion out of my head!) here goes:
Winston was aware of the importance of overseas votes, and used it to drag his heels while he ‘decided’ to choose Labour.
In his case, he used it to buy time.

Jacindamania is now largely an overseas phenomenon, and overseas votes will likely go to her, because she has worked assiduously on her overseas profile (more to get that UN job than anything else) and getting overseas votes from people inoculated from the everyday consequences of the ‘Mother of the nation’ will be of major benefit to her, unless an effective opposition puts in some work. IMO.

    Voting should be done in private, in public i.e., a polling booth where it is not possible to know what each individual has voted for. This protects the privacy and integrity of each person’s vote and limits the capacity of each individual to be intimidated, coerced or bribed into voting for a candidate against their will.
    
    We have a lot of third-world foreigners living in New Zealand now. Do you really think that wives and voting age children and vulnerable others will get to vote who they want if voting can be done at home in front of everybody on the computer?

      There has always been and will always be people who get manipulated. But the odds are even that it goes both ways.
      
      Perhaps you never knew women whose men controlled all the money and everything the woman did.
      That’s one of the reasons Kiwi Ladies had the vote earlier than almost every other lady in the world.

      Surely waikatogirl one as savvy as you will see that the current path to rapid inflation Labour are following is the gift that will keep on giving for the unions. Higher priced domestic as well as imported goods along with more taxes ensure even bigger demands ahead. They are already whinging about such a pitiful net increase from the recent increases.
      While the current low unemployment rate looks good it has reached down to the long term dregs who are getting an even better deal than the majority. The fun will really start as all those school leavers finally decide to find a job after a fun summer. Meanwhile the falling NZ$ will quickly erode any possible gain from tariff reductions as a result of the TPP. Even another gift from the efforts of the previous administration that has kept on giving in opposition. Evidence that good does indeed prevail.

      Those at the top, and I include union officials and their labour MPs will be well isolated from the effects of current idiotic policies.
      
      Those of us with a few bucks have the capacity to ride out the negatives for NZ that ardern the liar and wynston the thief visit upon us.
      
      My concern is for those caught in the middle with a decent income but a hefty mortgage. The long term projections for them are not great and are getting worse by the day.

        At least those who are employed and their jobs are safe will not be too affected by policies if they have reduced their debt as much as possible. It is the small business owners with no control of more and more regulations and costs being imposed on them by this business blase coalition. Grant, their so-called finance minister, has already signalled “business is busy making profits.” We can’t have that now can we! No way could air travellers be told the truth, so chaos ensued rather than blind panic. Only the brain dead could believe a drone could cause such a lengthy delay.         For the record, I believe that Black Lives Matter is a misguided movement. I believe that the biggest threat to the life of a young black male in the US is not a cop, but another Young Black Male, and the prevailing anti police attitude among the Urban Black Population is a factor on how bad relationships have become.
        
        But for you to use as an argument about how a man was treated by another man a link to an article from VOX showing that a BLM page was run by an Australian only shows that you have no idea about the subject actually is.
        
        When ordinary actions are being regarded as suspicious, like talking on a phone, and other actions, like an individual Booking a room as an individual, then booking the adjoining room as well, and then over a 6 day period, stockpiling an arsenal of weapons, associated equipment and ammunition that included fourteen AR-15 rifles (all of which were equipped with bump stocks and twelve of which had 100-round magazines), eight AR-10 rifles, a bolt-action rifle, and a revolver, do not seem to raise an eyebrow. We have to question the implementation of security on a wider level. Actions need to mean more than ethnicity, both positively and negatively. This is as anti identity politics as it gets.

When they moved into the political house that was previously inhabited by different leaders, I’ve often wondered if the current Government felt as if they found neglect in every room.

The last National government was one of the worst for the running down and under-resourcing of social services and agencies. Along with all the other National governments, that is!

No matter where the Sixth Labour Government and its coalition partners looked, there were things to fix up. Efforts to rid the halls of power of the stink of neglect permeated their work in the first year of their political residence, bringing more resources, stronger interventions, more oversight, and better support for the defenceless in our society.

“The stink of neglect”. A simple but accurate portrait of what the national Party of New Zealand does. They also stink of corruption and cover-up, racism, intimidation and espionage, as has been dramatically exposed in the last year.

After a few years looking after what Kiwis have collectively built, it will probably be time for the current Government to move out. Hopefully they will leave the public house in a better condition than when they first arrived.

Labour wasn’t expecting to govern and early on it didn’t look ready to govern. Ministers were ill-prepared for government or ill-suited to it. Two were sacked. But the core of a government is the bond between finance minister and prime minister. Grant Robertson has done much to shed the albatross always around Labour’s neck: a perception of poor economic management. Unemployment is below 4%, debt is below 20% of GDP and a surplus of more than $7.6 billion is forecast by 2022.

It could be blown off course by international events next year – and yes you can argue he should be spending more – but Robertson is on track to position Labour well for the 2020 election.
Jacinda Ardern is Labour’s greatest asset. Former prime minister Mike Moore said in the 9th Floorseries that leaders are like a canvas that people project their hopes and dreams on. She is that for many people. That’s the public role. But arguably her work behind the scenes is equally important. She has managed a coalition with the Greens and New Zealand First. That’s a simple sentence. Benign even. But that task was considered impossible by many prior to 2018. It hasn’t always been smooth but it could have been a lot worse. That will remain a challenge for 2019….”

    I note that the report downplays the scale of the reforms. It says intermediate schools will be scrapped but doesn’t say they will be replaced by 4 year Middle Schools.   Wot Plod needs to do is take plenty of photographic evidence and slowly but surely follow up on each and everyone one of them and subject them to the full majesty of the law.

      We stayed in Mooloolabah many years ago and after the first night I mentioned to the manager the irritation of “car enthusiasts” driving around and around the block all night. She advised me to take action like another regular which was to grab a bag of spuds and throw them off the balcony as they went past aiming for a drop on the windscreen…..

        I’d agree that Watson is strange fruit & although, on balance, he probably did murder the couple the case was a textbook example of the way the NZ Police approach investigations. ie. decide who did it & build up evidence based on their assumptions. That is why we have single issue nut jobs convinced that everyone ever convicted of murder is innocent.
        
        But, off topic, Watson must have been a great small boat skipper. He sailed the length of NZ frequently solo with an ease which most of us have in driving the car down to the dairy for a loaf of bread.

It looks like Winston has not made many friends in Stratford with the last race meeting being held over weekend, whilst they excepted the decision of closing down race meeting they are very unhappy that they cannot continue to use the training facility as they raise enough funds to over the costs to be able to make it viable. But Racing NZ want to sell up and move on with Winstons plan. It makes you wonder how much is Winston likely to score out of this as this didn’t work to well for a Auckland bowling club not so long ago.

      Why not? Their output on a per capita base wouldn’t be great but my guess is that they would feed themselves & by selling the surplus they would enable some one else to eat while building houses or providing medical care.
      
      NZ farmers are much the same but we have become far more efficient users of land & labour.

        I agree Maggy. Since when did the left look down its nose at the humble farmer and peasant? What a messed up society we have created. We have a left that treats blue collar workers with contempt and disdain.

        The left have always looked down on farmers, croppers and orchard growers in NZ.
        
        But they became disconnected with ordinary working folk sometime around the 1960s-70s, when highly educated (but functionally unqualified) children of the middle-class formed Labour’s hierarchy.

        MW, not at all. A great many farmers in places like those mentioned eke out a meagre and often subsistence existence.
        
        We tend to over romanticise rural and farming life and work. Famers are not the only ones who contribute to our prosperity. The high suicide rate among them suggests it can be very stressful with many taking on a high burden of debt, highly unpredictable extreme weather events and so on,

  100% correct. Something the wankers in the big cities might want to ponder. They might also consider that primary industry pays NZ’s bills and keeps the power on. The modern trend of villanising farmers is ignorant and appalling.
