        Classical Marxist theory was conflict , class conflict. That didn’t get them the revolution in the west that they wanted . It did happen in Russia under the despised “lumpenproletariat” , see even in classical Marxism some animals were more equal than others , but I digress. In the west the neo Marxists have had to change tactics but are still creating conflict , but now it is intergenerational conflict( as well as other “classes” such as race and gender , and they seem to be making a lot of head way. And it is comically doomed to failure, any intitiative to reduce incarceration is going to (rather comically given their agenda) increase the incarceration disparity, because they do not understand or refuse to acknowledge the statistical underpinnings of criminality:

  Criminality ( like intelligence) the combined result of a large number of genetic and cultural factors, can demonstrably be shown to follow a bell curve. Likewise it can be demonstrated that there is a population difference and mean and standard deviation between different ethnicities and cultures in criminality.
  
  In NZ Asians are better than pakeha, polynesians a bit worse, Maori a lot worse. As a result any such Feelz-driven initiative is absolutely doomed to failure until you figure out how to reduce the criminality of those involved Unless you are utterly racist in applying prison punishments to whites at several times the ‘colourblind’ rate.

    That’s not a peer reviewed paper you linked. Something dealing with NZ would be helpful and for that we have the Gluckman report prepared under the last Government. Your link for whatever it is worth does however make the following proposal which supports the initiative: 1. Each racial group has its own characteristic, geography-invariant distribution of criminality.

    The ‘report’ ((enthusiastic advert) for this program this morning, from RNZ ‘reporter’ Leigh-Marama McLachlan, was sickening.
    Aparrently Corrections have never before had a Maori-focus in their operations. I’m sure Governments since 1970 would dispute that but Leigh-Marama never questioned the press release.
    Also, what happens in those cases where prisoners whanau and friends are, eg, gang members and drug dealers. Again, silence.

  How about maori modify their behavior to conform with societal norms, forget that they think they have a ‘warrior gene’, embrace everything that colonisation has rewarded them with, fiofo and, get on with the life that have rather than the life they feel they are entitled to.

  This is *huge*: more respect for prisoners.
  
  Prisoners (presumably incl. rapists and murderes and dangerous assaulters?) are to be treated with ‘respect’. Their mana is to be upheld. There will be more kaupapa maori for Maori prisoners. More visitors.
  
  The aim is stated (Red Radio item) as bringing the Maori prison population down from 52% (?) to 16%, to reflect the general population numbers.
  
  The item said very little about reducing offending. And absolutely *nothing* about why these people are in prison. In NZ you have to commit some very serious crimes to be in prison at all.
  
  Red Radio news was really focused on those percentages.
  
  Hey, that could also be achieved by raising the non-Maori prison population.
  
  Also, nothing about education and career training. That would be the only thing for prisoners I would consider useful for reducing re-offending. Not some false, slimy ‘respect’ for people who have raped, assaulted and murdered.

    The whole implication of what Davis is saying is that Corrections staff have not been treating Prisoners with respect or care.
    
    The strategy states prison staff will be expected to treat prisoners with respect and uphold their mana – like they are worthy of dignity and care.
    
    That seems a hell of a slap in the face of dedicated staff who, in the main, bend over backwards to humanise some of our villains.

        They graduate from a 2year course….not as here, 6mo-12mo training)

      How do you deduce that it is a slap in the face towards existing dedicated corrections staff is quite beyond me. Any positive initiatives by them will obviously be complemented by this new one!

  A major flaw in the plan is the focus on re-connecting individuals with their whānau, hapū, and iwi, once out of prison. As hapu and iwi are based on regions, would this mean encouraging a person of one iwi (eg Tainui) to move to Waikato? Or would non-local iwi would be encouraged to provide support services inside another iwi’s territory? Not sure local iwi would like other iwi setting up camp on their patch. Is it culturally appropriate that one iwi’s marae is used by another iwi for their members?
  
  Indeed, within prison, which iwi’s cultural practices and values will have precedence, or will this be regional based?
  
  For all the jargon in the document, these issues do not seem to have been addressed.

    I think this is an important point. Iwi leaders want to cement in Iwi leadership, which is , as you say regionally based.
    
    Most Maori, and in particular must poor urban Maori have lost contact with their Iwi identity (assuming the family weren’t descended from slaves that is).
    
    A further exhibit is the current land protest. The iwi concerned support the deal. Renta Maori Mob inc does not. So what value do we place on the mana of tangata whenau here?
    
    So how does supporting a historic, superceded and failed social and organisational structure actually affect the lives of poor urban criminals?
    
    Not sure that it can.

Leaves me wondering why maori need special dispensation for entry into university courses, reaffirming to me that poor parenting choices hat allow this sort of crap, are a factor.

At what point is Goff, the Government, particularly the Greens, Winston for his part in banning natural gas exploration, or anyone else, going to explain where extra electricity is going to come from, since it is estimated if 10% of the present New Zealand fossil-fuelled vehicular fleet is replaced by electric equivalents, a new output just over 3.25 times the Benmore Dam will be required?

  That is already Auckland Transport policy. That is no promise.
  
  Goff has already signed up to an international programme called C40.
  
  Forty international cities have signed up go make all their city’s public transport electric by 2040.
  
  Only problem, Goff hasn’t been very public about this. It is a policy as well thought out as Cindy’s CGT. There are some key problems, being:
  1. Goff doesn’t have the money to help buy the 1,500 to 1,600 buses needed.
  2. Auckland’s & New Zealand’s electricity system needs an overhaul to supply the required levels of electricity;
  3. Problem of what to do with the battery sets, which will be replaced up to twice during the life of a bus; and
  4. What do you do with a 20 year old electric bus when it has reached its disposal date. I can really see people signing up to buy old buses they can’t plug into a wall socket at home, not!
  
  If, this is the extent of his election promises, either he and his team are exceedingly stupid, or they think the sheeple of Auckland are exceedingly stupid!

Kelvin and friends today will be releasing a major policy statement on how they are planning to cut the number of Maori in prison. In a document that is “co-written” there is a great deal of talk about restoring mana, but not much about how they will stop Maori committing the serious crimes, the ones for which people are sent to prison. So, itll be more of the same, we need a different system for Maori.

    Poor brown women are raped and beaten every day.

  Talking to the people already in prison is like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.
  They need to be talking to the mothers about their duty to prevent their kids becoming criminals; their responsibility in maintaining the mana of the Maori people and culture. They need to be staunch and let the women know that they are indeed the hands that rock the cradle, that they are expected to do so, and their success and mana will be judged by the results.

I hear this morning that the Prime Minister of Tuvalu is upset that Australia will not shut down its Coal Mines (supported today by the Labor Party).
He is going to spend round talking to the other Pacific Island nations to suggest that Australia be left out of the Pacific Island Forum (and China invited ?).
Will China give Tuvalu more than the $500,000,000 that Australia is giving them or should Australia tell them to Foxtrot Oscar ?
Our Cindy’s $150,000,000 would help sort out our Health Services too.
See the hypocrisy of Banimarama trying to upstage everybody again by attending again after having previously been dropped out.

    If you slide the slider to 2019 look at where they are being built.
    And from another website

         There is some good data here but the conclusion that the measured lateral expansion means that current approaches to climate change resilience engineering are flawed, is simply not born out by the study’s findings. The paper has no evidence or hypothesis (other than general theories, added following a peer review comment) of how or why the sediment has moved. The use of the term “increased sediment volumes” implies new sediment has been added from somewhere; there is no basis or evidence for this in the study. The authors have studied lateral expansion and have presented no data or theory about potential movement of sediment from higher ground to lower ground on the islands. This pathway may be more likely given increasingly extreme weather events due to climate change but is not explored in the paper. Unfortunately for the message of the paper, if this is indeed the pathway, it implies an acceleration of ultimate inundation rather than delaying it as it means the overall level of the islands is reducing.       Sleeping on Tuvalu would be hazardous. When you’re less than 3m above msl watch out for ordinary tides. They don’t know they are supposed to stop just because silly humans took up living where the seas went. Spring tides have even more fun bowling over trees, houses and people.

  Further about 40 percent of Australia’s coal is high quality coking coal for steel production. Seriously, if you asked these politicians. “How is steel made?” you would just get blank stares.

Mr Faafoi, interviewed today on the wireless, said that most of those targeted by the sustainable tenancies policy are renting in the private sector. And we can assume they are at risk of being turfed out because of tenancy issues, probably rent arrears or damage.

There will be some private landlords / property managers who are willing to engage with social workers to prevent termination of problem tenants. But for many, the extra work and hassle won’t be welcomed. By the time termination is starting to happen a lot of time and effort has usually gone under the bridge, and property managers in particular won’t be keen on even more uncompensated time. Especially when good tenants are queuing at the door.

Landlords of over half of private rentals are property managers. Landlords are not charities.

  The Te Toto car park is several km from Raglan. This guy mysteriously shows up late at night (with a firearm) with the stated purpose of stealing a vehicle to get to Hamilton.
  How did he get to such a remote location late at night? Did he walk? Wouldn’t there be more cars (to steal) at Raglan itself?

  One wonders if this click-bait does more to pre-inform a potential juror than does just knowing the name of the accused in the Grace Millane case?

The pressure on Kris Faafoi was cranked up on Thursday by MediaWorks, the owners of TV channels including Three and half of the nation’s radio stations.

Which comes back to the additional television channel election-promised by Labour but fell over when Clare Curran did the same – after some have suggested she may have said to Ardern, shortly following Clare’s appointment to Minister of Broadcasting, “What do I do about the stale old white males – especially the Silver Fox – at RNZ who oppose this?” and the answer was, it is suggested, like: “Arrange a meeting with Carol Hirschfeld, and see what she thinks” but then everyone knows what happened and no one talks about that anymore.

So Labour planned an extra television channel and no one has ever explained why, what end it would serve, although it might cost about $38 million, and is it still on a back burner somewhere – if such a thing now exists after natural gas was canned?

    I subscribe to the Australian online. Also the Australian Financial Review although it is a bit expensive. New Zealand will never have newspapers anywhere near that quality.   Newspapers make bugger-all money from subscriptions and casual sales now. The vast bulk of revenue comes from advertising sales.
  
  Unfortunately, advertisers need an assurance of circulation before they decide whether placing advertisements in papers is a sensible investment, and many advertisers are now choosing to spend their money elsewhere. I know our business does very little print advertising now, instead spending a small amount on radio, but increasingly, opting for digital advertising.
  
  Whereas the local rag used to have a monopoly on advertising revenue, there are so many more options now that those controlling advertising budgets are spoiled for choice, and can reach a lot more people for a much smaller spend.

      The Saturday paper here used to be full of real estate and used car display advertising; not any more. And as you say, there are so many options now for advertising vacancies, that newspapers no longer have a captive market. Most of our staff advertising now is done through TradeMe Jobs.

As a report back on the cost of petrol is anticipated tomorrow, Stuff in an item “Petrol report may pave way for more competition in more towns” says, under a photo of Judith Collins says –
Judith Collins helped stoke a furore over petrol pricing in 2017 after she picked up the usually low-profile energy and resources portfolio and vowed to “get to the bottom” of rising profit margins.

While under a photo of the PM, Stuff caption says –
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says people deserve “peace of mind that the price they’re paying at the pump is fair”. See? – gentler, and exuding more kindness

For some reason Stuff does not repeat now, what their headlines noted when this latest inquiry started: “Fuel companies push back on PM’s claims Kiwis are fleeced at the pump” –
Then they said – The Government will rush through changes to the Commerce Act to allow the competition watchdog to investigate the margins on fuel, as the pump price hits a record high.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the move at her post-cabinet press conference, saying consumers were being “fleeced” at the pump.
And again –
Ardern said the importer margin on petrol climbed from 7 per cent of the price of petrol in 2008 to 16 per cent in early 2018.
“That increase represents a transfer of wealth from petrol consumers to producers to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars a year,” Ardern said. “Consumers, in my book, are being fleeced.”

Let us see tomorrow if Stuff is “pulling the wool over our eyes” in not now rebleating Ardern’s claims that “Consumers, in my book, are being fleeced.”

  People know the price of petrol in New Zealand isn’t fair. 91 is currently $2.30 in South Canterbury. More expensive than Auckland that has a regional petrol tax on. But I doubt labour will do anything about this.

      No it’s not really. The fuel tanks are at the port, 2 minutes from the port it is $2.30. 1 1/2 hours from the port the fuel is cheaper, despite it having further to travel by road to full up those stations.

The reason is because the big players have refused to give other players any access to fuel in the South Island locking out competition. The South Island has been paying far too much for fuel for too long

Greta Thunberg’s virtue signalling boat trip across the atlantic of course always had a massively greater hidden ‘carbon footprint’ than flying – just think of extra provisions, huge cost of building a low-utilisation yacht etc with all its high maintenance sails and other parts etc. But is most laughably revealed by the fact that several crew members are flying home transatlantic after their publicity crossing. So actually using far more jet fuel than if she alone had just jumped on a plane.

Well its only 10.30 and already I have three calls on my landline either saying they are from Spark or else saying I have a computer/router problem and they are to help fix it. They must have been on holiday on Friday as there were no calls but Thursday there were four. These calls sure do drive people away from land lines.

      Increasingly land lines are in households subscribing to fibre services.
      
      I suspect we can block each “Spark” call as it comes in, so calls from the number of the fraudsters can be permanently shut out. Could Spark and/or the other Orcons cheaply and simply school their fibre subscribers in a campaign to shut out the fraudsters? Just putting advice on their web sites would cost extremely little.
      
      Maybe in this computer age, digital exchanges could also be programmed so that line-phone subscribers still on the copper network could be given a way to block incoming numbers.

        It’s not that easy. I’ll give you an example, a year ago a friend in the states father got a phone call from the local campus police to inform him that his other daughter had been in a serious car accident that she had caused, that she was drunk, and that he needed to pay her fine. The caller Id showed the call came from the local campus police station. Now if he blocked that number it would actually block the local police campus that his daughter was attending university at. It wouldn’t of blocked the spammer that had actually made the call.
        
        Your best option is to simply screen calls that come in to your phone. Which is something spark allows with their new home phone. All numbers in your contacts ring straight through, those not in will be screened.

      I have VOIP. I rang the company because I was getting calls with no-one there. Thy were able to confirm that I had had a number of calls from one number in Hamilton (I don’t know anyone there) – and so had other of their clients.
      I don’t know what they did, but the calls have stopped.

  I don’t have an issue with Muslims per se. However, and I know this is unfashionable to say, but in the last 20 years they seem to be over-represented in people who blow up other people.
  
  Secondly, I do have an issue with groups of people who subjugate women. Again, I know this is unfashionable to say, but there are practices Muslims carry out that subjugate women. If a teenage Muslim girl in a traditional Muslim family, decided to abandon the hijab, things might not go well for her.

I heard a guy on the wireless this morning complaining about industrial emissions. Yes cement manufacture does produce emissions but we need concrete and there is no way around it.

But he said something that was crazy. He said that New Zealand should only use aluminium produced in New Zealand because it was low emissions. (Producing it uses giant amounts of electricity and in New Zealand the smelter gets all its power from hydro.)

Its hard to know where to start with the stupid. Most of the aluminium in New Zealand is imported in built up products. But more importantly, it does not matter WHO uses the “green” aluminium. Just so long as somebody does. Whether the aluminium is used domestically or in other countries does not affect global greenhouse emissions.

Why can’t journalists ask questions instead of letting these folk present rubbish as facts.

Paula Bennett has published a post on her Facebook page this morning, and it’s a must-read; check this out:

I was recently contacted by someone who called themselves a victim. They talked of a Labour Party staffer who works in Jacinda Ardern’s office. The accused is senior to most of his victims, and the allegations being made are serious. The person who contacted me repeatedly named him. They said his behaviour had taken place both within and outside of Parliament. They asked for anonymity and said they came to me because they believed there were vulnerable young people still at risk. They said they, and others, believed that coming to me may be the only way they can be heard. It is their hope that there will be action and in future the Labour Party can be a safe space for people in the party and people who work at Parliament.

What they’re alleging is serious. One victim was admitted to hospital because of the stress this has caused them.

It’s a lengthy post, and people should take the time to read it in its entirety. But these paragraphs stands out:

The victims say they’re fearful of the accused and his power and that it permeates from the Labour Party Head Office to staffers in the Prime Minister’s Office. They say there are other influencers who have made threats. They said 12 people over the course of previous years have come forward with complaints and later told me that at least two that they knew of had reported complaints to someone senior in the Prime Minister’s office, they named that person.

They say the Party and Jacinda Ardern’s office is trying to distance themselves from it as much as possible by stressing its ‘independence.’

I commend Paula Bennett for taking up the case of these women. But it is an indictment on the Labour Party and particularly its women MP’s that the victims don’t feel they will get any action from their own team. Equally, the silence of Green Party female MP’s, especially Jan Logie, an outspoken critic on cases of bullying and sexual violence, is deafening.

    The fact that it sounds like there has been no police involvement suggests that the harassment is probably just creepy/icky/disturbing or perhaps even some of it joking by a clueless guy rather than aggressive or physical, and having heard both sides the higher ups in Labour are perhaps fairly regarding this as over-reactions by some perhaps dramatically inclined women that they don’t regard as sufficient to fire the perp.
    
    Doesn’t excuse Labour’s efforts to shush the complainants and deny them transparency in dealing with the complaints.

A lot of people spend time in hospital for mental health issues. Anxiety and depressive disorders abound. Somewhere between 10 and 20% have significant mental health problems.

Yesterday the victims were told there would be an appeal process after the way the Labour Party originally handled their complaints. The President of the party called and said it would be run by a QC. They feel it’s just more of the same, a policy and process conjured up on the hoof without any consideration given to how an appeal process should be run. It’s not victim-led. Ultimately any decision making will rest in the hands of the Labour Party Council who the victims believe is not best qualified to make decisions like this because of the inherent political influence that the accused is able to wield.
They say the Labour Party completely ignored them when they asked a process to be developed with a third party sexual abuse prevention agency. For time to be taken to get the process right. They’ve just made up this process as they did with the previous one.
The victims say they’re fearful of the accused and his power and that it permeates from the Labour Party Head Office to staffers in the Prime Minister’s Office. They say there are other influencers who have made threats. I have now had three people come to me, asking that I continue going public with their concerns as they don’t feel they can. They are scared for themselves and others. They don’t feel that they have been listened to.
After confirming their identity to me, we discussed their options. I believe in a victim-led response, they felt powerless and the last thing they needed was me dictating what would happen. I suggested they go to the Police, or Parliament’s Speaker, along with other options. They asked me to go to the Speaker and to go public. They hoped people would see how serious they were that they had to speak to me, a National MP, to be heard.
I knew I would get criticised for going public with what they had told me, but I also knew I had to leave my politics and concerns for how I would be judged to one side. I believed them, I heard the fear in their voice. They also told me about a number of other serious effects this was having on them and others such as anxiety, panic attacks, vomiting and time off work. They talked of having no real hope and feeling powerless.
My role gives me a platform to speak from. I believe them and I feel I have to do what I believe is right. Too many victims suffer because they are threatened and silenced. The shocking and deplorable becomes their norm and they start to blame themselves. These people are courageous and brave and they deserve a voice.
Since my initial contact I have seen emails where senior people in the Labour Party have responded to the victims by limiting access within Parliament of both the victims and the alleged perpetrator. I have seen an email where victims were told “you may not go to xxx office in Parliamentary
I have seen an email where victims were told “you may not go to xxx office in Parliamentary buildings (I have changed the language slightly so as not to identify anyone)”. As one of the victims said “telling people to avoid parliament because of a predator, is very scary.”
I have also been told that while the original investigation was happening the alleged perpetrator was put in charge of hosting an event at Parliament where senior MPs and officials knew at least three of the complainants would be present.

The victims have been very clear with me that the Prime Minister’s office knew and that two complaints were made to the head of her Leader’s Office. Despite this, they say a complaint was never received and victims will have to come forward again.

I have been told repeatedly that the Labour Party allowed the accused’s behaviour, that he is too valuable to lose, and that he is close to senior and important people. I asked them what they want. They want a proper respectful process. They want his membership suspended immediately and for him to be stood down so people don’t have to be frightened of bumping into him and they want to keep him away from other vulnerable young people.
Now that an appeal is underway the victims have been told they can’t speak to anyone in the Labour Party, that includes the people who have formed their only support system. It’s yet another form of isolation that will have a huge impact on already vulnerable people. They don’t feel safe at work, they’re constantly on edge.
It’s not my job to judge, I fully accept that I don’t know all the details and have only heard one side and that these are allegations – I have purposefully not outlined them or named or identified anyone. But I will speak up, and yes use different public platforms to do so. I would tell the Labour Party what I have been told, but to be fair they already know what I know and from what I can see have chosen not to act. I hope that changes.

And, notably, who has downplayed the Labour Party sex camp scandal every step of the way, from what I’ve seen of your comments over the last 18 months or so, since that story came to light.

  The only way to deal with steffy girl is downtick and move on.
  
  She is one of the weirdos that get a “buzz” from your responses whatever they may be.
  
  It is unfortunate that Maggy is one that gets special treatment from steffy but that indicates to me that steffy is clearly threatened by Maggy’s obvious erudition. That is one of the reasons that I believe steffy is a girl as some underdeveloped women, and I mean in the brain area, really resent a smart woman and need to attack them mercilessly.

  I think they figured I would be shocked and embarrassed if posts were published on Kiwiblog that described me as menopausal or deranged or the possessor of saggy little tits.
  And who discusses the size of underwear worn by 65 year-old matrons?
  
  As I’ve made very clear.. I don’t particularly give a stuff what people call me.. I’m happy in my own skin.
  
  But I do care when folks tell lies about me.
  I do care when 3rd parties are brought into their abusive claims.
  
  Each time stepheboy denies that he abuses or harasses me, he adds to the pile of crap I have to deal with on KB.
  
  Still, it’s not my blog.

        Stephieboy, I very infrequently comment on other commenters but I am driven to the view that you have an unhealthy and pitiful obsession with Maggie. Don’t be disingenuous and ask for examples. If you were honest with yourself you would know immediately what Maggie and others complain about. Threads are littered with examples. Sure you cop a whole truck load of flack but, rightly or wrongly, that’s what happens to trolls who drop into a bear cave looking for trouble.
