  Yes. In 1975 in Australia the Governor General (the Queen’s representative) gave Prime Minister Gough Whitlam the boot and installed the Opposition Leader as interim PM (who got the key appropriation bills passed) and subsequently prorogued Parliament pending fresh elections. Things were running extremely hot in Canberra at the time. I may be wrong with some detail.

JAG is now claiming Treasury officials are unprofessional and don’t know what they are talking about. All because they have calculated and reported that her EV fee-bate scheme will an expensive exercise that will achieve very little. Oh dear….greenwashing is expensive, who would have guessed?

    Oldgolfer, It would be the ultimate torture procedure to be tied to a table with match sticks keeping your eyes open and being forced to watch Genter and Jacinda for hours on end on television,broken occasionally by an hour of Kim Hill
    on the radio.

  The thing that worries me about these expensive and ineffective policies is that the impact accumulates. After 20, 30 years of doing this stuff, you have hundreds of poor policies which drag the country down. Then you need a painful reset as we saw in the 1984 – 1993 period.
  
  I think one problem is that with the passage of time, we have politicians who were children in the 1980s, and so have no first hand memory of the pain of major fiscal and micro-economic reform.

Race Relations Commissioner proposes land swap to solve Ihumātao
The new Race Relations Commissioner is rejecting the idea he didn’t need to visit Ihumātao because it’s not a race issue.
Meng Foon visited the site today and is calling on Jacinda Ardern to do the same.
He told Andrew Dickens he visited the site to learn …
Fong says he has come up with his idea to resolve the dispute: a land swap. [1]

• NewstalkZB need to get Mr Foon’s name right, or he may tick them off for racism.

• But at the same time –
Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern: As I said in the House yesterday, I’m not going to enter into speculation around negotiations between Kīngitanga and mana whenua. They are the parties around the table. We should respect the process that they’re involved in. That’s what this Government is going to do. – Hansard, yesterday [2]

However – The new Race Relations Commissioner is rejecting the idea he didn’t need to visit Ihumātao because it’s not a race issue.
“I just wanna make sure that the conversation is safe, transparent, there’s no racism involved, and that is the key offer that we are actually there for.” [1]

Does that confirm that same race exchanges can be racist, or just insulting. And how much is intergenerational factors a conflict?
Although Pania says she is not involved, but not why.

• However Mr Foon has a solution too “he has come up with” – a land swap – but fails to say where swapped land would come from and who is paying for it?
A Maori land swap, or Crown land? And will it allow what Fletchers plan for the land they currently privately own?

• And at what price or value? – somewhere around the $19 million, as records show Fletchers paid for Ihumatao, or the $38 million Auckland Council recently said it is now worth?

And how is that difference resolved – since Pania wants it as historic parkland or back in farm production (presumably a cheaper land function), and Fletchers want housing land (seems about twice the financial value)

• And if Fletchers shouldn’t build on it, for Pania’s reasons, should anybody build on it – ever.
If Fletchers forego it, should it not be transferred with a covenant that it never have homes built on it?

• But surely the Race Relations Commissioner or his office is present to check what people may say or write, or how they may otherwise act – their conduct in reaching a solution, not what that solution is?

  I may be wrong but I recently saw extensive plans for further developing Auckland Airport. One of the proposals is a further runway to operate at right-angles to the existing one and it seems to be close to where this land is. Is there another deal in the “air” whereby the alleged “owners” plan to sell the land to the Airport company for a big sum? If I’m right the historical sentimental rubbish is merely a front.

  I really don’t understand this viewpoint.
  Why does only the 2016 Brexit referendum count as the will of the people? Parliament (elected in 2017) doesn’t count, and a second referendum to clarify the will of the people is unacceptable. Is it that you only believe in democracy when it agrees with you?

    It’s not only the the referendum. All parties went into the last GE promising to uphold the result of the referendum.
    
    It’s clear that the British people voted for a meaningful exit from the EU, which means that freedom of movement is gone, and membership of the customs union (and therefore the ability to negotiate independent trade deals is gone).
    
    The retainers know this, and their strategy, ably executed by May, has always been to take a WTO-terms exit off the table thus removing the result that the EU fear most and fatally undermining the UK negotiating position. This would make delivering a deal acceptable to the people impossible and so creating the conditions for another referendum – despite all and sundry promising that that vote was a “once in a generation” done deal.
    
    I’d also observe that anti-EU feeling has hardened in the Brexit camp due to the actions of these fifth columnists and the arrogance of Tusk, Juncker et al.

      Did they? I think the problem with the 2016 referendum is that it wasn’t clear what Brexit meant. So I think it’s very dubious to now say that the people voted for this or that kind of Brexit and assert that it’s absolutely beyond question that they support whatever the government is delivering.

      Well, there was a referendum in 1975 about joining the EU (or EEC as it was known then). The UK overwhelmingly voted yes.
      
      The 2016 referendum was already the second referendum. So why is a second referendum allowed but a third not?

        Actually, the two referenda were different, and cannot be linked. The first was to decide whether to join an economic union- the EEC.
        
        The second was to decide whether to leave a political union that the British people had never decided to join – the EU.

        The EEC in 1975 is a vastly different beast from the EU of 2016. The brief for the organisation has transcended the Economic and encroached on matters of National Sovereignty.
        
        There is a reason why Norway, for example, has twice voted in referenda to not join the EU, whilst retaining advantages of the EEC.

    This is a great idea (not). Let’s have a referendum every few years to find out how people currently feel about BREXIT and change our policy based on that.
    In case you didn’t realise, the idea of a referendum is to determine what people want, and then for parliament to take action based on the will of the people. In 2016 the people said EXIT, a lot of politicians have obstructed not facilitated implementing the will of the people. This is not democracy. Neither is claiming that people have changed their minds and a new referendum should be called. If you do this, you will never be able to draw a line in the sand and make a decision.

      There was a referendum in 1975. Surely, by your logic, the 2016 referendum should never have been allowed. The people voted 67%-33% in favour of joining the EEC, end of story.
      
      Have you considered that the will of the people changes with time. That’s why we hold parliamentary elections every few years. If the will of the people never changed, we should just appoint MPs for life.

        But the EEC in 1975 l was a different beast to the EU of 1990 and 2016. Given the authority the EU has, is it not right for the British people to express how they want to be governed.
        
        Further, both Labour and the Tories promised a referendum over the 2009 treaty. Both reneged. Trusting British politicians is hazardous.

        The trouble is that the EEC have left the UK in the last 20 or so years – creating a megamonster in the form of the European Union. The UK was subjugated against it’s will, and well beyond what was agreed to in 1975 – a trading common market. Not the socialist dictatorship of the current EU model.

    Pretty dangerous precedent to say “fuck you” to referendum result and demand another referendum to give the result desired by a minority of voters.
    
    Brexit support has always been divided between London/media/elites/scotland remainer and rest of UK brexiteers, so don’t pay too much attention to what the media are saying, they are not with the people on this.
    
    Boris is following the polling on this. Majority want follow through on brexit by any means at this point.

    Based on the strength of the reaction to my comment, I think I’ve hit a nerve. Brexiteers really only support the “will of the people” when it goes their way.
    
    Brexiteers are scared of another referendum, because opinion polls clearly show that a majority of the population no longer want Brexit. Maybe the polls are wrong, but I think it’s clear that the real reason Brexiteers oppose a second referendum is that they worry the will of the people will no longer agree with them. If they truly believed the public was behind them, they would happily let the public say so.
    
    Rather than admit that they are afraid of losing another referendum, they disingenuously insist that the will of the people cannot be revised. This is logically inconsistent because the 2016 referendum was already revisiting the outcome of the 1975 referendum.
    
    A lot of water has gone under the bridge since 2016. And, while I’m sure some people in 2016 wanted a hard no-deal Brexit, I doubt that’s what the majority voted for. A lot of people feel duped — enough to swing the narrow outcome, I bet.
    
    I think there should be a second referendum so that the will of the people can be clarified — what kind of Brexit do they want. That would be the democratic way to do it. Of course, it might be that the will of the people no longer agrees with what Brexiteers want, so they won’t allow it.
    
    Thankfully I am watching this slow-motion train wreck from afar. I’m not affected by Brexit, although some of my friends are. I pity those having to deal with this insanity.

I have always respected the Police and the way they carry out the law until this year, but when your Police Commissioner steps in to shut down comment on some of the things the PM’S partner has alleged to have done and the way it has affected peoples right over the ownership of guns I myself will never go out of my way to dob someone in for a crime unless they change their way.

    Well, Greg O’Connor retired from his Police Union job (and from the Police at the same time – he had leave of absence to do the Union job) and promptly stood for Labour. He only got in because Peter Dunne saw the writing on the wall and pulled the plug on his candidacy just before the election.

        I’m in Ohariu. Brett Hudson was going to be there anyway. Whether he won or not, the National caucus would not change. By electing O’Connor, firstly you have an extra local MP which can be useful, and secondly if O’Connor lost Labour would have added a list MP who was almost guaranteed to be worse. O’Connor’s win almost kept Mallard out which would have been fantastic.

      The integrity of police has totally collapsed in the last 18 months. Saw a little Asian cop take a left turn a few days ago after a rough looking BF Falcon screamed through red traffic lights . . . he definitely did not want to stop it. A few year ago these dumbarses would have been chased, cuffed, locked up and ended up before a tough old beak who would have given them a real sentence. Should dentists in New Zealand be allowed to perform Orthodontics without having the specialist qualifications?

According to my partner, 99% of Dentists carrying out these procedures here, have received their training at either Mumbai or New Delhi Dental Colleges.

  We have a few dentists in the family and even more in our social circle.. obviously, and only those who have undertaken extra training post grad undertake some of the “extras” normally performed by an orthodontist.
  
  Dentists qualified at Otago are regarded as some of the most competent dental graduates in the world, those in Oz and other nearby countries…. not so much.

    How did this work before colonisation? They were not one entity, they were disparate tribes, killing each other, enslaving each other, all sorts…

  Yep, they’ve got money to splash on free school lunches, but they’re cutting back on essential surgeries.
  I recently had a cataract operation and was subsequently told by my eye specialist that I only made it by a few days before they raised the points needed for the operation.
  There is now doubt whether I will ever qualify for the second one and people are going to essentially be blind before they qualify for cataracts.
  Wasn’t happening under National.

    Its cheaper to fly to a medical tourist destination (ie Singapore/Bangkok) have the cataract op done by a qualified professional using the latest equipment. AND have a weeks holiday than it is to have cataract done privately in NZ.
    
    I had both mine done in Phnom Penh, Cambodia by a very skilled Eye guy who spoke perfect english(His daughter is married to a Kiwi)
    
    700 USD each eye for a standard lens. More for bifocals.
    
    So maybe the gummint could use overseas aid budget to fund overseas eye cataract ops.

  There are schools already doing some good stuff, with partnerships with local bakeries etc providing healthy food, funded directly by parents – ie. not giving the kids cash which is spent at the dairy on the way to school. Cost isn’t always the issue, it can be time (both parents at work) and other resources.

    My kids have always made their own lunches, it takes 5 minutes to make a sandwich and throw a biscuit and piece of fruit in a lunch box. Cost is very little, time is very little and children learn a life skill.

Watching CNN this morning as I’m away from my regular TV and the only alternative is Al Jazeera. But honestly it’s tough to take more than 10 minutes!

They just hate Pres Trump and he is their only topic. They’ve moved off Trump /Russia because that was a hoax. Now they’re onto Trump /Puerto Rico and how he is personally responsible for the loss of 3000 lives because of his incompetent handling of the last hurricane disaster to befall the island. Imagine that? Trump personally let 3000 people die!?
The level of wrong reporting and opinion making is just breath taking.

I’m pretty sure every year in winter we see the same thing happen, hospitals over crowded, people asked to only come if it is an emergency and not something the gp can deal with. Also pretty sure pretend doctor Clark after two years as the pretend minister of health it’s time you realise this is not the previous governments issues or fault, but yours. The cost of living has gone up under your govt more people are struggling to afford the gp again. Also as well as the normal flu I’m guessing some hospitals have the measles outbreak in Auckland to deal with as well. But alas, underfunding pretend doctor Clark, that is your problem, not the previous government. And while we are on it why are people being told pretend doctor Clark that the points have been risen for operations because there is no money to do the amount of elective operations that were carried out prior to your government.

Experts warn it’s putting patients at risk and ties up ambulances needed for other callouts.

  Have just been advised that my check up that was due 3 months ago is delayed because they are running 3 months behind and no indication can yet be given when the appointment may be made.

NZTA has put out an update on the Whirokino Trestle and Manawatu River bridge replacement, which is proceeding really well.

It’s worth remembering that this important work was promised by National in 2014, and because construction work had started prior to the 2017 General Election, will be completed. That’s in stark contrast to all the other much-needed roading projects that the Labour-Green-NZF government has put on the back-burner.

Last year, the shirts bore the name “JAPAN” and the Japanese flag, but this year they are plain white.
The Japanese authorities know that if any local Koreans were to be “triggered” and asaulted one of the boys, then the Japanese authorities would be held to be responsible by the parents. So they have no choice but to try to give the boys a low profile.

Ardern’s initial statement on Ihumatao –
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has vowed that no building will take place at Ihumātao while the government and other parties try to broker a solution.
Speaking at Auckland Airport this evening [departing for Tuvalu], the Prime Minister said the government wanted to find a peaceful solution to the Imuhatao stand-off.
She spoke after meeting with local iwi, Fletchers, and the Auckland City Council.

“Ultimately we are falling on the side of the local iwi [who support the housing development] and their position. They are not the ones leading the protest here and so if we come in over the top, it really would be undermining the local iwi in this case,” she said on Wednesday.

“A North Shore teenager who admitted raping two schoolgirls and violating another – while they were too drunk to stop him – has been sentenced to 12 months’ home detention on the basis of his age and previous good character.

The sentence has outraged victim advocates and those who know the teen, saying it sends a dangerous and “awful” message to other young men.”

  It can cost less than $1 to make breakfast (weet bix $0.09 each) with half a doz weet bix with some milk and fruit (tinned fruit is cheap). Or 4 weet bix and 2 slices of toast.
  It is also cheap to make lunch – a couple of sandwiches can be easily made for under a dollar (loaf of bread $1.50), a piece of fruit and a muesli bar. Its not much more than $2.
  When something a parent really wants for themself (eg mobile phone) costs $10 a week they will usually find a way to pay it. I wonder how many parents that ‘cant afford’ to feed their kids lunch everyday also have selfish ‘needs’ or habits or buy wasteful crap in the shopping.
  Also wonder how they get fed in the 12 weeks of school holidays?
  Some people just dont want to take responsibilty for anything. Feeding my kids is my no.1 responsibility and I would sacrifice anything to do so.

Why NZ’s immigration policy has been making the country worse off, economist Michael Reddell spells out in a video organised by the Opportunities Party.

Reddell, of Croaking Cassandra blog fame, points out that NZ’s rate of immigration in the developed world is matched only by that of Israel, which has an open door to world Jewish people.

In NZ exports as a share of the economy are falling, and Australia’s economy has outpaced New Zealand. He sees the economy as becoming increasingly “inward oriented”.

Among the points that Reddell focuses on are that many of the skills of the supposedly high-skilled migrants to NZ are on average not more skilled than the average New Zealander.

Many of the migrants to NZ classed as higher skilled have occupations that “no-one thinks of as having advanced skills”. Examples: big numbers of migrants are retail managers, cafe managers, rest-home assistants and nurses, and dairy farm workers.

“You have to get down to about no. 20 on the list before you say, ‘That’s a recognised highly skilled occupation’.”

He blames immigration policy for the outflow of skilled New Zealanders to Australia.

Riddell argues that, because NZ’s economy is so heavily dependent on natural resources, increasing our population makes us worse off.

The pressure on infrastructure from the rising population puts pressure on interest rates, keeping up the kiwi dollar, making it harder to build export-based industries.

Once again National shows why they deserve to lose the next election. Right now their strategy seems to be steal the policy of a potential coalition partner and alienate middle NZ at the same time.
