good luck to farmers of the south, just peaked outside and im stoked I no longer farm (well got a LS block and handfull of cows) still halarious to watch wifey clear a foot or so snow off the car to go to work.
Most snow weve had around here for quite a few years… must be that climate change thingy, im sure more taxes will fix it //

I had to point out their policy said the would ONLY be sold to first home buyers. He is either dumb and not aware of his parties policies on Kiwibuild or a liar.

    I live in a blue electorate that you really could put lipstick on a pig and it would return National.
    
    They cold pin $100.00 note to the leaflet and I still wouldn’t believe anything let alone vote for them therefore they don’t waste a lot of time leafleting here.
    
    That aside, I have taken my time to help out in an adjoining electorate which is more marginal posting stuff into letterboxes and am going to scrutineering training tonight.

Who’s a betting person?…what’s the chances of a reporting piece/opinion piece today in the MSM that doesn’t ‘sneer’ in it’s writing of Collins and gush enthusiastically at Arden when reporting on the daily campaign trail news?
Odds not in Collins favour I’d be certain of.
(Too many young female ‘reporters’ it seems that if they actually wrote some truths about Arden/Labour would lose friends …all young sycophants it seems to me, but what do I know)

When Jacinda makes it a crime to ridicule religion, well, especially the religion cobbled together by a Dark Ages Saudi pedophile, what will be the prescribed penalty? Will it be burning at the stake – these events offered great public entertainment in the 16th century and are made for live TV as it took on average about 30 minutes for the offender to expire. Or perhaps it will be the more culturally appropriate punishment of decapitation? But that’s all over too quickly, really. Hard to choose I know but it’s great to see us getting back to our roots under Jacinda’s (and Andrew’s) wise leadership.

  I am sure the Navy will learn from the report. However these activities are hazardous and soldiers and sailors are pushed hard – that is the job.
  
  As for a spending review – if this means cutting defence spending, what joke is this? Airforce finally has nine new planes on order. That is welcome but it should be double that.
  
  Putting aside training planes and helicopters, the airforce has a total of 13 aircraft:
  
  6 x Orions – 50 years old
  5 x C130s Hercules – 54 years old
  2 x B757 – 28 years old (delivered second hand in 2003).
  
  So that means that the last time the RNZAF took delivery of new transport or maritime patrol aircraft was 50 years ago! I bet they are looking forward to their new deliveries.
  
  So good luck on cost cutting.
  
  Sure Australia is a bigger country but they have approx. 150 fixed wing aircraft excluding 72 F35 fighters on order.

    I presume from your remarks that you don’t think that old planes are any use?
    The US Air Force has, as a main force bomber, the B52. The last of them was delivered in 1962 so all of the ones still in use are at least 58 years old.
    The are expected to remain in use until the 2050’s so they may be one hundred years old before they are scrapped.
    Are they really that useless?

      They are that useless, Alwyn. Availability of aircraft is low – they’re constantly under maintenance.
      
      The B52 is an outlier for the USAF whereas all fixed wing RNZAF aircraft are ancient.

  I think it is the “give them a chance” culture that killed him.
  
  The bloke was struggling with the tough cardiovascular demands of diver training. They should have dropped him, but in this new age of anyone-can-be-what-they-want military they bent over and kept him going and that ended up killing him.
  
  Diving is unforgiving. In many parts of military training you can fake it by giving them a lighter pack or giving them a second chance if they fail the obstacle course. Not so in diving – no undo button if you drown.
  
  Blaming the incident on the lack/skill of instructors is just arguing over where to park the ambulance.

    While the culture to succeed would have been a motivating factor, Yarwood and his mates were deliberately fucking with the operation of their rebreathers which pretty much qualifies his death as “accidental suicide.”
    
    What I don’t get is why they were using 100% O2 and an airmix on a dive where the maximum depth was 6 metres. Without getting into the bio-physics a PPO2 of 1.6 is what most Nitrox divers settle on as a hard limit, i.e 6 metres for pure oxygen.

  With regards to the review, there has been a recent NZDF tender which hopefully has brought this issue forward, A recent tender (GATS-MBAF) was recently awarded (July) to an Australian company, value was 5-10 mil. there was a highly qualified NZ company who should have been awarded the tender, as the australian bid did not meet the requirements for a NZ based component. although the tender closed in Feb, the NZDF reasoning was that this was now time sensitive, as these are Aviation refueling vehicles needed for the new aircraft coming. long story short, I sent an OIA to Ron Marks, who surprisingly did sweet FA.
  Now the NZ business is struggling, and although the NZDF acknowledge there was mistakes made as the contract tis signed nothing an be done.
  
  To the comment about Labour putting military people into harm, I would not trust them to provide leadership in a military crisis. We can lockdown a country for a virus, but then send our best and brightest to conflict? Hippocritical much?

  Yes cut in defence spending means cuts in capability. The NZDF is now not up to the task of providing even a pretence of defending NZ. We know that the US and Australia do that for us.
  My fear is that we are winding down our defence force like we did in the 1930s only to be confronted with a huge war. Many men died because we were not ready to go to war when it came.
  If anything we need to increase our defence spending and, in particular, re-partner properly with the US and Australia. Unfortunately most NZers live in dream land when comes to defence.

John Carney does a good explainer about Tax and Property developers.
It’s an interesting read.
Also the claim Trump only paid $750 in ’16 and ’17 is not true.
The NYT article actually says he paid $1 million in 2016 and $4,2 million in 2017. Did some not read it properly in their haste to condemn?

To Carney’s article;
‘Tax records showing that Donald Trump told the IRS that he lost nearly $1 billion over the course of a decade starting in the mid-1980s highlight the complexity of how the tax code treats real estate investments, but they do not tell us much about the president’s business prowess.
“Mr. Trump lost so much money that he was able to avoid paying income taxes for eight of the 10 years,” the Times reported.

That may be true, although White House spokespeople have said the report is not accurate, and the Times has not released the underlying documents or explained the sources of its information. But the bigger contention of the article–that the tax records show Trump is not the artful dealmaker he purports to be–is not supported by the evidence presented.

The article’s most basic problem is that it assumes that the losses Trump reported on his taxes are actual economic losses. But that’s highly unlikely due to the nature of his business. As a real estate investor, Trump was not in a position of a store owner selling inventory below cost and incurring operating losses. Instead, he would have been reducing his reported income by the amount of his interest payments on loans and the depreciation of the property he owned.’

      $72m received in 2010 Batman, so unlikely to have anything at all to casino’s in 1995. You get a refund because you PAID the tax in the first instance. And you get a tax refund for having paid tax and not having the profit to support that paid tax.
      I would suggest that he overpaid in one year, had the balance transferred to a future year, and then made losses which allowed the overpaid tax to be refunded. The only way IRS could come after him is if they do believe there is an under or overstatement in his return, or if the return is fraudulent. Under or over statements have a 3-6 year statute of limitations. Fraudulent returns have no statute of limitations in the US. And its unlikely that Trump has filed a fraudulent tax return. His taxes will have been vetted by some pretty heavy hitters, and he would have relied on their expertise.

-Is now the sky path the most obsolete piece of infrastructure in NZ – surely it surpasses the Taranaki ewok village
-Will we now have 20-25 days of bridge closure per annum due to high winds in Auckland; or
-Is the structural integrity of the bridge a lot worse than they are letting on.
-How fucked is the western ring route going to get later today.

Today confirms Auckland is a third world city. Far from the most livable city in the world.

  A close second place would be the $5 billion CBD rail loop. People are working from home now. They dont need to drive as close as possible to the City and catch a bus or train in for the last bit.

Guy’s call me crazy…but I seem to one of the very few that think that National can actually WIN this election.

The trend of the last election (and previous elections before it) is that the polling numbers between the two major parties ALWAYS tighten up as we get closer to the election so based on that:
1. Labour’s numbers will drop (they have already dropped from 60% to 47% including a 5% drop in the latest poll)

2. National’s numbers will increase (Judith is just getting started…watch this space).

3. In this particular election NZF and Greens will go under the 5% threshold (NZ First are toast and remember the Greens always poll 1% to 2% lower on election day)

4. This leaves ACT to be in a very good position to be Kingmaker and obviously they are going to go with National aren’t they.

It all comes down to this – if the Greens are gone (and I believe they will get under 5%), then you’re writing off 10% and therefore splitting the 90% that’s left.

So with that in mind, Does Labour have close to 45%? Yes. Does National and ACT have close to 45%? Yes…at that point it’s anyone’s game.

Yes it’s possible for Labour to govern alone on 45% but that’s pretty much heading to the bare minimum that Labour can go with no Greens to help them. If they go to 43% (and with no Greens to support them) then it’s game over for Labour.

Also keep in mind that no party in the history of MMP has ever governed alone.

Interesting that the winter energy payment runs out in the school holidays during the South Island’s coldest week of the year.

I personally think that in order to save money it should be geographically (climatically) means tested and no one north of the desert road should receive it. No one in the winterless far north should get a cent extra for winter heating as the temp is so mild up there. Anyway, the govt should promise to eradicate the payment as NZ doesn’t need any heating due to global warming (sarc).

  In the time I’ve been in NZ (last 28 years) there hasn’t really been a lot of difference between National and Labour policies (ie. the steak) and if you printed them both out on white paper with no hints, most voters would not be able to tell them apart.
  
  Where they have differed is in how they sell the sizzle. National will, generally, say they are fact driven etc while Labour go more for the emotional stuff and hand outs.
  
  Now it seems National is cloning the Labour sizzle too.

  Which to me says National will fund and plan as if suicide prevention is of critically importance over and above all other mental health goals that could be set. You get the structure for suicide prevention right and as a byproduct you catch the other mental health issues on the way.
  
  So I like that approach. I think a strategy that plans for an acceptable number of suicides is wrong. People will still die as we try but we did try.

As recently as two years ago, the flight of tui across the sky was something that you noticed. Now, in our neighbourhood, almost the only birds in the sky most of the time are tui.
Are tui now the kings of the avian world – even magpies seem to have made themselves scarce?

I don’t quite understand this whole Trump tax controversy. The NYT report says Trump paid $5.2mil, but is expected to get all by $750 back.

So he was willing to pay millions more in advance, literally 7000x how much he owed. Any business people here who are willing to put 7000x their tax in just in case?? How many people even have the means to do that? That, to me, would indicate he has a lot of money. So, then, why are people saying that he isn’t that wealthy?

  I had the privilege to do a few years of community service alongside a young lady who was a relatively close cousin of John Tamihere. She told me in no uncertain terms that the majority of Maori, and particularly the family felt he was an embarrassment to Maori and they wanted nothing to do with him or the Maori Party.

  EVERYONE should take a good look at their policies, which include:
  
  – Renaming New Zealand to Aotearoa by 2026
  – Rewriting the place names on New Zealand maps
  – Auditing the public service on its cultural competence
  – Requiring state broadcasters to have basic te reo Maori fluency
  – Demanding that all government funding for projects over the next two years guarantee 25% Maori direct resourcing
  – Demanding that all schools have Maori in their staff senior leadership teams
  – Demanding that fifty percent of all new social housing must be allocated to Maori
  – And now a separate Parliament in charge of $20 billion
  
  Seriously, I strongly recommend that everyone visit the Maori Party website and look at their policies. You will be stunned.
  
  Any Government that includes this current Maori Party in its current radical state will set race relations in this country back 80 years.

According to the Herald today, ACC, which owns 15.8 per cent of Syft, is behind a power play that has led to the resignation of Syft’s chief executive, the entrepreneurial Doug Hastie, who is also behind Chanui Tea.

Christchurch firm Syft makes, in our lay folks’ terms, electronic sniffer technology, or in its own words, “selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS)” products.

Hastie, who has an engineering degree and an MBA from Yale, resigned as chief executive after being voted off the Syft board at the company’s annual meeting.

The Herald technology reporter, Chris Keall, writes that Hastie, with a 15.4 per cent stake, is Syft’s second biggest shareholder.

The shareholders’ vote on directors that dropped Hastie, writes Keall, ” followed manoeuvrings that saw ACC head of private markets Martin Goldfinch lose his Syft board seat in April last year.”

Syft, using “smeller” technology developed by scientists at Canterbury University, idled along for years. It got through almost $30 million of investor capital until Hastie was put in as chief executive, according to the newspaper. Now its equipment is used by big car makers in America, by Samsung in Korea and a chip maker in Taiwan.

We should be:
1. Naming the escapees in the media. Why do they deserve name suppression.
2. Charge all visitors a $15,000 up front refundable isolation bond. And then instead of taking them to court, charge a bond that will be refunded if they follow the rules. They should sign a form with clear terms and conditions.

  My iPhone is now telling me that cellular service is provided by some outfit calling itself “VF Aotearoa”. I had signed up with “VF New Zealand”. Perhaps they novated the services agreement.
  
  Still, it beats my iPhone telling me to “Be Kind” or “Stay Strong”. Mercifully, that has stopped.

In other words, they want poor/middle class NZers stuck with old crusty cars as they sure as hell won’t be able to afford electric vehicles. Or what will happen is that poor/middle class Kiwis will have to go into much worse debt than otherwise just to afford the EV relative to a cheap petrol vehicle.

  The dimwitted James Shaw was on HPDA trying to defend the Greens policy of having a harbour tunnel that only carries rail and no cars. Apart from the fact there’s no rail infrastructure on the North Shore to connect anyone to said tunnel, cars are apparently going to continue to use a 60+ year old bridge that is already falling to bits and closes whenever the wind picks up. HELLO JAMES, WAKEY WAKEY! Ever heard of a single point of failure? I can see it now – an accident on the bridge and all the second hand, clapped-out Leafs the Greens will have people driving will be stuck in a traffic jam with their batteries running flat.

    It’s at this point where you want either the preferred option which is no Greens in parliament or the second option based on current polling is Labour majority.
    
    A Labour majority whilst still bad would be enough to shift enough swing voters back to National come 2023. Also no loony Greens involved in Government.
    
    Still hoping that Greens get knocked out and Labour slips in vote enough for NACT to squeak through. Highly unlikely but one can hope.

  I believe that is wishful thinking on Shaw’s part.
  
  Even if the Greens get back into Parliament and are in a position to force Labour into a coalition deal, there is no guarantee that Shaw will retain his leadership. He’s not sufficiently left-wing for many Green activists, and he was made to look hypocritical over the private Green school shovel ready money fiasco.

  While it is more common to use the term when killing an animal that is sick or injured, all euthanised (or euthanased) means is to kill someody or something painlesly, so it was used correctly in this case. I think this is the first time in my life I’ve gone into bat for 1$uffed lol.
