      The government of China a few years back mandated a one child per family rule.
      This apparently resulted in many, many female foetuses being aborted until the preferred male was conceived.
      The knock-on effect of this was that soon there were not enough girls for all the young men wanting partners.
      Enter human trafficking where young girls are stolen or sold from surrounding Asian countries to be child brides, sex slaves and poorly treated workers in Chinese factories.

The enthusiasm from the local media about Jacindazilla’s chances of carrying off the Nobel Peace Prize was impossible to ignore.
Then when she got nowhere the silence from the media was deafening. They wouldn’t even tell us who did win it. It as almost as if the bloody award ceased to exist.

        NZ can’t afford a Labour govt. Labour can’t afford it either.
        The outcome of this election will be horrendous for the winner as there is very likely to be a global recession within the next 12 months. Plans will be irrelevant. It will take our best to navigate.
        This will not be a job for MBIE friendly amateurs but Treasury. Grant will be horribly out of his depth without being aware of it.
        National have a proven wide skill base to call on who are not sycophants with real experience in economic matters.

      Correct, the names of the nominees nor the people that nominated them can’t be revealed for another 50 years – so all the reports were nothing more than rumour and water-cooler speculation. Bookmakers had no more inside information that anyone else, so one thing is obvious – the articles were deliberately placed to influence one side of the election result.

That ‘housing shortage’ – is it a figment of the imagination? Why otherwise would Labour’s much touted 2017 scary 71,000 number be dropped as a measurement? Has to be because the current government has said no thanks to measuring it.

Maybe there is a shortage of housing, but a glance at rental vacancies shows thousands of rentals available.

Auckland nearly 5,000, New Zealand wide more than 9,000. Flatmates wanted nearly 4,000. And that is just today’s Trademe listings. There are other advertising sites as well. Yes these are indicative figures only, but so was the 71,000, and at least vacancy ads are actual.

Given over half of applicants on the social housing waiting list are single or couples, no children, and mostly singles, the flatties wanted category could make a decent hole in the list. Maybe there are issues why applications for vacancies don’t succeed and maybe they are nothing at all to do with a ‘housing shortage’.

  I just left a job in real estate as admin in rentals and we had at least 4 new rentals up for rent each week. Of course you had to have good references and an income, but if you were a good tenant there was no problem after the credit check was done. If you had a bad or inconsistent history it would mean you missed out.

    My son rented a basic ex state house with no garage in Oranga, which is still a state housing area in Onehunga. The rent was more than $700/wk.
    A forty hour week on the minimum is $756 before tax.
    In these days of shortages of state housing I wonder why this place was sold off and ended up in the hands of an investor. That’s not what they were built for.
    After a year of no improvements to the house the rent went up, so they moved.

      Kainga Ora publishes statistics on their vacant properties, with reasons. Some vacancies are short term, eg under repair. Others are long term, many of which will be removed from the portfolio. Reasons for removal from portfolio have changed over the years including sale to tenants or no demand and sold to first home buyers or on the open market.
      
      ETA KO include in the stats the number under long term repair for meth contamination.

        Of course a single minimum wage income couldn’t abide rent like that. It’s perfectly obvious.
        The family at the time was neither single income nor was either income minimum wage, by a long stretch.
        However there are points of note.
        It was not a flash house, and nor was the neighbourhood.
        His job brought him to Auckland so he sold his house, but can’t afford one here.
        If he can’t buy a house, without me dying, how can a family on considerably less income, that is to say most first home buyers in Auckland?
        House prices here are outrageous. Everyone knows that, but nobody has a solution. Personally I think it has a lot to do with very low interest rates.

    Here’s an alternative:
    
    Find 16,000 soon-to-be-pensioners who have worked as labourers, cleaners, worked on nightshift for the last 50 years of their lives. Give them $80K each instead to be used to pay down mortgages, debt, restructure for retirement, look after grandkids, etc. Far better use of the money than $1.3b, most of which will never leave Wellington.

I went and voted yesterday at St. Johns, the place had 2 people at the door greeting you and pointing out hand sanitizer, 1 person checking your voting card and giving you a pen and 4 people at desks to give you voting papers.
2 people had just come out after voting and I was the only voter there. They did say it had been busy earlier.

    A lot of kiwis in Australia work ordinary menial or labouring jobs because the wages are so much higher with a cost of living lower than NZ. Why bother to live in a shitty ex-state house in Mt Roskill barely being able to pay the rent when you could be on the GC living your life. It’s not the best and brightest who are fleeing to Australia but ordinary kiwis who know that successive govnt of both National and Labour have betrayed them and put them at the mercy of property speculators and exploitive low paying business. They will find partners here and have children and in a generation home will be Australia not NZ anymore. It’s already happened to three members of my family while the other is in the UK.
    
    So enjoy the ride National/ACT supporters and the NZ you created.

      Out of all the emigrants to Australia it is NZ that has the highest percentage of degree holders.

        I can see that. Especially when you look at suburbs like mascot and Alexandria which had significant industrial areas where they actually made stuff. Now those jobs and industries are gone just like the car industry.         And despite all of this Australia is still a superior place to NZ. The rot set in well before Key came in although he accelerated.       I understand what you are saying but there is some truth in the fact that older generations are denying the younger ones —– the pension was enacted as a destitution payment, just because you’ve paid taxes all your life is still not good enough reason to collect the pension.     She was a teenager, on her own, already with mental health problems and no idea where she was coming to or what she should do when she got here.
    And then they let her deaf sister in too – so who was supposed to look after her?

Why does Ardern want to introduce a blasphemy law when Parliament has only recently got rid of one? Is she a Mormon-manque who longs for the certainties and role-playing of religious belief? She certainly appears to delight in donning hijab, a symbol of submission, at every opportunity. In addition Islam and Mormonism have much in common – their dogmas were revealed by angels, polygamy is endorsed by both and they are both teetotal.

But beyond all that, why should we enshrine in law the idea that religious sentiments are somehow “special” and cannot be regarded in the same way as other ideologies? And what does it mean to actually “defame” a religion. And why should those who are judged (by whom?) to have done so be liable for imprisonment?

Questions for Cindy’s Sunday School today.

      Ethnicity (of main applicant) is reported for those on the social housing waiting list which is a pretty good proxy. Currently half are reported as Maori, but could be more as it is voluntary. I remember when

Are the National Tax cuts being misunderstood even by economists like Eaqub (Newshub Nation). He stated that a Tax reduction would not be as beneficial as money targeted at low income earners.
The trouble is he seems to fail to recognise the different areas the money will be spent in.
Money going to lower income earners will certainly be more likely to be spent quickly but there is a stimulation problem. It will be spent in area already relatively healthy. That is Supermarkets, rent, perhaps their WOF, power, etc.
National’s Tax Cuts are more likely to help the small businesses many of which are clinging to a tenuous lifeline. Those getting tax cuts spend money at cafes, restaurants, theatres, the entertainment industry and other functions. These are areas that the poor seldom support financially but that have been monstered by covid restrictions.

I like Judith, but feel National has internal issues that still need sorting out. I’d be very happy to see a National/ACT coalition as our next govt, with Judith as PM, but with ACT giving National some of the ‘spine’ they seem to be missing on really vital things like free speech. Certainly working for yourself has many upsides, and I work in the gig economy and have been for a long time, but there are some down sides too – all the services that a boss provides.

  There are many advantages and I’d rather die than work for a crappy boss again. But yes: no paid sick leave or holidays etc. you definitely need a good nest egg and to calculate all expenses into your fees.

    From what I’ve heard (mainly from talking with Uber drivers) gig jobs are great if you have some other form of income/support, and are just looking for a side job to make a few extra dollars. It’s incredibly flexible; drivers can login whenever they have the time, and logoff whenever they feel like it. So for retirees or people with partners in a traditional job for example, gig jobs can work really well.
    
    But if you are expecting a gig job to be your primary form of employment, it would suck. No benefits, no certainty of income.. just not a good position to be in.

The dam project could be part of a newly proposed water storage initiative.
A National Government would aim to safeguard local water storage by establishing a $600 million fund for a long-term plan.
The aim would be to unlock economic potential and safeguard against future drought.

  First sensible post of the morning, not bleating about the PM or the press.
  There are subsidies around house insulation and I think for solar energy – a Government needs to the same with water, household and commercial.
  We are doing things backwards discharging rain water from properties and importing water from the town supply. Perhaps a rate reduction for properties reducing water usage by rain water storage.
  At the least how about 55 people from council standing around in the street wearing haz jackets and white safety hats having a chat about it.

My respect for BoJo has been on the decline, but has now entered the realm of terminal dive.

His latest woke brainfart has been to commit to have every UK home powered by wind-turbine generated electricity by 2030.

I haven’t the time today to set of the evidence-based case for why this is economic, physical and environmental madness.

So instead, have a read about those getting wealthy by stripping ordinary power users of more of their incomes:

A botched green scheme is paying wind turbine owners seven times the value of the electricity they generate – and it is set to cost UK consumers an estimated £1.4billion.
A Mail investigation has found:

* One turbine reaps about £375,000 a year, yet produces electricity worth just £51,000;

* The bumper subsidy is available only in Ulster but adds £71million a year to energy bills across the UK;

* As the subsidy is guaranteed for 20 years, the overall cost to UK consumers will be an estimated £1.4billion;

* Incompetent officials tried to shut the scheme in 2016 – but loopholes let it run until March 2019;

* In a stampede to erect turbines before the deadline, hundreds were put up, many owned by venture capitalists and even the Royal Bank of Scotland’s pension fund.

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister made a dramatic pledge to power every home by wind by 2030.

  1) Chop down native forest in USA.

  4) Take it by truck to power station.

    Actually cmm, if you wanted to do away with all fossil fuels right now and go 100% electric cars as Cindy says she wants, you would need 1, 2 or 3 Transrail mainline locos parked next to every service station to supply the peak power demand.
    
    This is taking into account that Electric cars will replace ICE cars like for like. i.e. 500-600km range, and sub 10 minute charge times, which Lithium Ion batteries are fast approaching.

Inexplicably, the UK classifies biomass electricity as a carbon-neutral fuel. It is anything but. Cutting live trees, shipping them thousands of miles across an ocean and then burning them to generate electricity both reduces forest capacity for carbon capture and releases more carbon pollution into the atmosphere.

      Exactly what I was pointing out. It’s all accounting bullshit.
      
      Dairy/sheep/beef farming is not even carbon neutral – it is carbon absorbing.
      
      Farmers grow grass which sucks up CO2. Every atom of carbon in grass comes from the CO2 in the atmosphere.
      
      Then some of the carbon they’ve eaten ends up in the meat/milk/wool and the majority gets excreted – much of that as farts and burps.
      
      The amount ocf carbon emutted back into the atmosphere is clearly much lower than the amount that is absorbed, yet some how our climate bullshit artists manage to convince us that our dairy/beef/sheep industry is blamed for 50% of our emmissions.
      
      How is it possible that our “scientists” are not up in arm about this?

  Casinada’s written a book about his struggle with depression. This suffering probably makes him sympathise with the plane hijacker.

If all the signs are correct, this time next week the destruction of New Zealand will enter its final phase.

All my life I have been an optimist – mainly due to confidence in my own abilities and the fruits of my efforts. But under a Marxist regime, effort and ability counts for nothing as everything (including your freedom) can be taken from you on a whim.

It’s impossible to overestimate the danger that this country faces if/when our bemused population allows the Marxists to retain power. On their own, they will be dangerous enough. But regardless of what they say now, they will likely also incorporate some of the most racist and anti capital, anti freedom policies of the extremists on the fringes.

Standing against this threat there is only one small party, ACT, promoting sanity and freedom….. but they have less than ten percent support in a country which has been literally stupefied by irrational fear.

I don’t think New Zealanders have got a clue what is in store for them.

I have been intrigued for years about the Trump Phenomina. Or should I say Anti Trump (TDS).

When I talk to antitrumpets. I ask what is the problem with him.
The standard replies are
a) He is a buffon(obviously they dont know the meaning of the word)
b) He is sexist
c) He is racist
d) He lies.

MMM.
Yes I get that his persona gets up peoples noses. Yes me too.
I suspect that his rough, gruff attitude doesnt help when the populace has been conditioned to have polititians not talking straight and being “”nice””.
Obama and Cindy fall in to this category.

Remember this is a 74 year old property developer, self promotor. Who started with his nomination for Candidate at 1% in the polls. Then against 17? well oiled competitors he went on to beat the “”shoein”””Clinton. Certainly not a buffon or idiot.

He is sexist? Other than media beatups and spin. I have not seen any definative proof that he is sexist. Some comments he has made may be construed as sexist. But the man himself. I would like to see the proof, any proof 🙂

  First, you specify that “Media articles don’t count” – well, what other source of evidence is anybody here supposed to have?
  
  Second, you haven’t defined your terms, so if anybody does manage to produce an example of racist or sexist behaviour that doesn’t come from a media article – then you can simply say “that’s not what I’d call racist or sexist”.
  
  Set out more clearly what you would accept (not just what you won’t) as “REAL proof of his racism, sexism etc” – and you might get some actual engagement.

  No they don’t start early. They start counting at 9am on Saturday… so at 7pm there will be the first trends and possibly results rolling in if early voting is large enough.
  
  I did see my local polling both cart boxes out to cars at 4.30pm, so I presume the scrutineers take them to a secure and central point for storage each day.

For years now, I’ve only ever bought the ‘Vogels Original Sandwich Bread’ because it’s what my partner likes. As I’m home by myself this weekend, i decided to try the ‘Bergen Soy & Linseed’ instead.
O.M.G. – where have you been all my life? For both taste & texture it runs rings round Vogels for a fresh sandwich! I always make the same ones, roast pork, apple sauce, and lashings of Laoganma Spicy Chili Sauce (….his all time fave)
I’ve yet to work out how to break it to him once he gets back tomorrow and i have to make his lunch for work..
