There were three anouncements yesterday. Two welcome. One alarming. The demise of Phil Twyford was more advanced than I had anticipated. Andrew Little losing Justice was surprising but a good thing.

But to take cake as Kiwis say was Nania Muhata as Foreign Minister.

In all countries this is important appointment. In Australia the last two Foreign Ministers, Marise Payne and Julie Bishop have been excellent. Payne is not quite the class act that Bishop was but she is very competent.

Mahuta is simply not articulate and I suspect knows little about the world beyond New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. And unfortunately her obesity and facial tattoos will add to her credibility problem. In Japan, especially, but also in China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and possibly many other countries, her appearance will cause suspicion or even hostility. For example, in normal circumstances, she would come under real scrutiny on entry to Japan, and she would, literally be refused entry to many places in Japan such as some hotels, some restaurants, all gyms, all dwimming pools, and most recreation facilities. Of course her diplomatic status will stop this happening, but she will have this impact.

Now I am not saying this is fair or fat shaming. And personally I like many tattoos, but not on face. But what she will face is a reality. If she was highly competent that might partially compensate for these issues but I think opposite is true.

A baffling decision.

  as you say the decision to put the princess of the waikato into foriegn affairs is baffling. on the plus side however she will not be leaving the country for some time due to Covid-19 and so will not frighten our trading partners.

    Stuff – New Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta says she’ll be taking New Zealand solutions – including indigenous approaches – with her to the world stage.
    
    Jacinda – Mahuta got the job because I asked around and she is very quick at making relationships, which is an important part of the MFA job.
    
    Both the above seem crazy to me. Shouldn’t having existing international relationships with China/US/UK be of most importance. This is not playschool learning on the job through indigenous means.

  Nanaia Mahuta is the daughter of Sir Robert Mahuta brother of the late Maori Queen.
  She is far from inarticulate. Her tattoo is a formal tribal recognition of her high status, not a TV prop.
  NZ needs to acknowledge that the Maori Paramount Chiefs, Rangatiratanga, are people of power and authority in their society. They make their societies work.

    I will assume you are not being sarcastic. Yes she has made world news (well in Russia at least) because of her ethnicity and facial tattoos. If she is “far from inarticulate” I have never heard that in Parliament on any issue of substance. And my point remains – In most Asian countries she will be treated with suspicion or hostility because of her obesity and facial tattoos. I am not advocating these attitudes. As a Taiwanese national who has spent much time in these societies, I am simply telling the reality. I do not see how you can be effective foreign Minister of New Zealand if you are not taken seriously in China, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Sure they will be polite, but I know how they will think and it will affect outcomes.

      One could argue that in many societies being female would be even worse.
      
      But to what extent should NZ pander to prejudiced cultures? I think we’re right to say ‘this is the most competent human being, gender, body size, ethnicity (including tribal tattoos) irrelevant’
      
      However if your argument is that she’s incompetent and has actually only been selected *because of* gender, body size and ethnicity that should not happen in any fair society.

    Foreign officials will place little premium on Mahuta’s pedigree even if the woke foreign press is easily impressed by her indigenous credentials. And, having heard her speak on numerous occasions, I have to disagree with you – she is inarticulate and frankly, not very bright. I have no problem with Rangatiratanga being recognised as a source of “power and authority” within iwi – indeed, it really isn’t my business one way or the other – but in the wider political world it means nothing. I suspect that, as usual, Ardern is just virtue signaling with this appointment.

  I understand the cultural/tribal reasons for having facial tattoos, but I still feel that it gives the wearer an aggressive, not to say hostile appearance.
  In cultures which regard tattooing with some distaste the new Minister may well not get the welcome we might wish.

    I am a bit like you Biscuit – apart from Kiwi who was the biggest Cup Cert I can remember a $50odd quinella a couple of years ago is almost my sole success since.
    
    Was very impressed with Tony van D in the Caulfield Cup – he was 3 and 4 wide all of the race and ran home solidly. As I played rugby and cricket against Murray Baker in his and my younger days will probably put The Chosen One in Quinellas and Trifectas.

When did diversity become the key criteria for selecting a cabinet and allocating portfolios to cabinet ministers?

The cabinet is meant to be the strategic leadership of the government, but listening to media reports this morning ability, experience, capability has nothing to do with being the right gender or racial profile!

Let’s watch how the next 3 years pans out then?

  The Cabinet still have the duties of Executive Government to perform. Inability just means nothing succeeds as before. Law is unimportant except it can yield taxes. Property rights depend on mob rule and Enid Blyton Police whose badges are covered in tar from the ninth floor.
  
  Ardern doesn’t know whether she is a socialist global warrior ~~Princess~~Queen or has to actually run a Govt here in the antipodes. The coming global financial crisis will probably eat her and her govt anyway. Without the needed abilities the uni cafe society will be disbanded.
  Can we get our money back–an accounting is needed. The right to govern requires enforceable responsibility.

  Serious question – who do you think “missed out” that deserved more? Who is languishing out of Cabinet but should be there?
  
  I don’t know enough about the Labour Caucus to give a very informed opinion, but, on the face of it, Ardern put her stronger performers in the right sort of places (DPF seemed to think so as well).

When did we get away from Dr Martin Luther King’s dream that one day, his children would be judged not by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character? Diversity is all very nice, but to me, the only percentage that matters is that a Cabinet, whichever party it is selected from, is 100% competent.

  In my opinion it is the crocodile being used to “eat” the fabric of our society starting with “altered” education to fit a “narrative”, university places based on skin tone and ethnic back ground or selection to stand as a member of our Parliament to fill a quota.

    Diversity is window-dressing Tall Man. That’s why I said the only thing that matters is competence.
    
    Take Christopher Finlayson for example. Respected right across politics for his intellect and ability, and oh yes, he happened to be gay. But his ability defined him, not his sexuality. Take Dr Peter Tapsell, Speaker of the House between 1993 and 1996, and Maori. Did he achieve respect across the House because he was an outstanding, fair Speaker, or because he was Maori?
    
    As I said, diversity is all very nice, but never, EVER should it be a substitute for ability and competence.

        Yes, he is, but he never let it define him during his time in politics. Compare that to some in Parliament, who are LGBTQI first and foremost, and never let you forget it.
        
        I exclude Grant Robertson from that. Pretty much everyone realises he is gay, but he doesn’t make a song and dance about it. I think he is generally a very competent politician, who doesn’t need to use his sexuality as a crutch, unlike some.

      NIMBY hypocrisy. If you buy near Eden Park you accept the inevitable noise issues. Maybe that took $50k off the purchase price, but in any case there’s no grounds for complaint. Equally, it’s just miserable. A concert to give pleasure to tens of thousands versus a few hours of inconvenience.

        I’ve lived near to EP for over 20 years and mostly within 350 meters of the ground.
        I go to the rugby and sometimes the cricket. the noise from those events is quite tolerable.
        Concert noise on the other hand is another matter. People who live on the slopes of Mangawhau or Owairaka will hear any concert whether they want to or not. So will a large retirement village, and the Salvation Higher Ground centre.
        Also crowd safety for those on the playing surface. Very inadequate acess to and from the playing surface. In the case of emergency getting 17k+ people out of three small access ways would create a Hillsborough like situation.
        I fail to see why EP needs to canalbalise other Auckland venues that run concerts successfully.
        I fail to see why ratepayers who benefit from Mt Smart or Western Springs need to give EP a subsidy.

I remember when

Another interesting feature of the Cabinet re-shuffle was giving David Parker Fisheries.
This gives him a control in two Ministries involving both export and conservation.
Is it to counter to over greening or is it a step towards as much ‘continue with changes slowly’ as possible. A minister that is prepared to take the hard line.
I think some in Fisheries will be a little apprehensive.

Serious question. What did Phil Twyford do (or not do) in the weeks between the announcement of Labour’s list, and the appointment of the new Cabinet? In the former, he went UP one place, from #5 to #4, despite his litany of failure with Kiwibuild and light rail.

Now he’s down to the high 20’s, after three months when nothing of significance has happened in any of his portfolios. I mean he wasn’t responsible for border failures, or for the economy going into recession, was he?

Phil Twyford has been treated most unfairly. Is it because he’s white, straight, middle class and male?

Another serious question. Jenny Salesa was Building and Construction Minister, Customs Minister and Minister for Ethnic Communities (plus a couple of Associate Minister roles) and ranked #13 on Labour’s 2020 list.

Yesterday she was dumped from Cabinet completely, according to the Prime Minister because she wanted to go in a different direction. Salesa will be nominated as an Assistant Speaker, surely a role that no Minister in their right mind would ever actively seek in preference to a ministerial role.

Something seems a little strange here. Salesa may have been relatively anonymopus as a Minister, but as far as I know she never went mountain-biking while New Zealand was in lockdown, and she certainly has never faced accusations of assaulting staff members. When she was appointed to Cabinet she was hailed as New Zealand’s first Minister of Tongan descent, but now seem to have become a victim of Labour’s quest for diversity, rather than a poster-child.

The Melborne Cup is the one time of year my partner really lashes out on the gee-gees. He’s just spent about 14k taking a ‘Field Trifecta’, so he’ll be praying for 3 roughies first second & third.
All the boys are making an afternoon of it down at the Viaduct. They have a sweepstake and put a grand in each then pick a horse from the hat. Winner takes all. So 1 chance in 24 of scooping the lot.
Hopefully things go well, or it could be a bit of a shitty week around here 🙁

    (d) Using a room after other people have been there is safe.

re: The Hunter Biden laptop. Daily Caller points out that the FBI have had Hunter Biden’s laptop since December of 2019 and have done nothing about it. Still part of the swamp, it seems. Especially since the information would have been useful in Trump’s defense during the impeachment in January/February this year.

If that shop owner had not come forward, doubtless they would have totally ignored it. They could have notified Congress if it was deemed top secret, but they didn’t even do that, even though it directly impacted on the impeachment case.

On December 9, 2019, Mac Isaac received a federal subpoena – photographs of which are included in the Post’s article – showing that the FBI was taking possession of the materials. Since the Post’s story ran, Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe confirmed that the FBI does have the laptop and hard drive.

The FBI clearly has the laptop and hard drive – and has had them for nearly a year. Fortunately for us, Mac Isaac made copies (as he had the right to do) that were eventually shared with the New York Post. If not for this, it seems doubtful the American people would have learned the extent of the Biden family’s corruption.

Most concerning in the article was the allegation that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was in possession of this computer and hard drive back in December 2019. This action took place right at the end of the U.S. House of Representative’s impeachment sham against President Donald J. Trump, and right before the U.S. Senate tried the case. A large portion of the President’s legal defense case revolved around strong evidence that former Vice President Biden’s son, Hunter, was peddling his influence to his father to land lucrative jobs overseas that he might not have otherwise been qualified for.

If the FBI was, in fact, in possession of this evidence and failed to alert the White House to its existence that would have given even more weight to the President’s legal defense, this was a gross error in judgement and a severe violation of trust.

I am going to make a bold prediction
Trump wins the popular vote and then some.
I completely discount the polls favouring Biden by double digits or near, they are massively over sampling Democrats.
The poll at the end favouring Trump are probably not too far off but not picking up enough of the hidden Trump voters, add another 2-4% and I get a popular vote win to Trump by up to 3%.

  Does seem very bold.In 2016 Trump as the great outsider had narrow victories over an equally unpopular politician in Florida and the 3 midwest states and still lost the popular vote. The Democrats were divided and lots of Bernie’s supporters stayed home.Undecideds broke for Trump and the Comey announcement tipped the scales.
  
  This year Trump is a known and unpopular figure, while Biden is a known figure with a modest positive net favourable. Trump has a real problem with women voters as demonstrated in the mid terms and seems to have lost older voters who resent the way the virus has been handled. Independants who went for him last time seem to be more in Biden’s camp this time. Pollsters have found very few undecideds.
  
  Over 95 million votes have already been received which seems to indicate a high turn out with a lot of low propensity voters already voted.
  
  This does all seem to point to a Biden win in the popular vote of over 5% even allowing for the same polling error as last time ( which was really just the margin of error in a few states ). The only conta indicator seems to be the high turnouts at Trump rallies but these are presumably all Trump voters already. There is an indication the rallies might actually work against Trump as they are seen as very irresponsible.

Does the Nanaia Mahuta Maori hierarchical position highlight on of the two of the difficulties that arise when settling Maori issues.
The first is the hierarchical positions, granted because of birth.
The second is the tribal membership power, granted because of the tribe you belong to relative to the area or institution involved.
Would Maori be better served if the actual ability of each person dictated their position in Maori affairs.
The Maori hui approach has much to recommend it. It is representative of the members collective view. Even the length of time taken to reach decisions has the benefit of allowing the time to fully digest the relevant information.

Oh dear Hipkins at the Cv 19 update today (paraphrased):

Hmmmmmmmm. Only the other 4,999,999 ( +- margin of error) that figured that touching a EFTPOS machine directly during lockdown wasn’t a good idea when we didn’t know the real extent of the spread and who else touched those buttons.
And then at the end when asked about tracer app ( I think given context of statements being made): (again paraphrased)
“no, we are not going to make it mandatory at the moment ,but everything is always under review”.
Very interesting comments from our new Covid Minister ( come Friday).
