This article is promoting EVs. It looks like a nice vehicle. But does it make sense to buy?

The list price of the Hyundai EV Kona that is featured in the article is $80,000. After the subsidy generously offered by the Government this would come down to $72,000.

Let’s compare the Kona EV to a Hyundai Ioniq hybrid for $46,000.

The difference in price is $26,000.

Let’s assume a petrol price of $2.50 per litre. That is about 25 percent above current petrol prices. Even at that petrol price, your $26,000 that you saved buys you 10,400 litres of petrol. The hybrid gets about 5 litres per 100 km. So that petrol you buy with your savings compared to the EV would allow you to drive 208,000 kilometres. For most New Zealanders that would cover 10 years of driving. 10 years is way longer than most people would keep the car.

This comparison understates the price advantage of the hybrid. I have assumed that the EV can be charged for free which of course is not the case. I have also assumed that the hybrid has no maintenence costs which is only true for the first three years.

Even with petrol at $2.50 per litre the hybrid looks like a better buy. And it has a range of close to 1,000 km rather than 400 km for the EV. Plus no anxiety looking for charging stations.

This may explain why hybrids are selling so well compared to EVs. Even if you assume that petrol will increase to $2.50 per litre and you add in the Government subsidy, for most people a hybrid is much better value than an EV. This is exactly the point made last week by the head of Toyota New Zealand.

My prediction is that the sales of EVs will increase over the next three years but hybrid sales will grow much faster. This outcome will frustrate both Jacinda and James Shaw. They may introduce higher car taxes to coerce people to buy EVs. That will work to an extent. But its principal effect will be to force people to hang on to their existing vehicles for longer, so increasing emissions.

It is even plausible that the already announced car tax will have the effect of making people hang on to their existing vehicles, so increasing emissions compared to the counter factual.

All subsidies have unintended consequences. The ones that are certain:

An increase in poverdy for low income families who need a car.

Increased costs for farmers and trades people. The latter will pass on the costs. That will increase inflation

Less certain:

An INCREASE in transport emissions compared to what they otherwise would have been as people hang on to their existing vehicles instead of replacing them with more fuel efficient models.

  BY, a mechanic told me that in many cases the hybrid petrol motor doesn’t reach a proper operating temperature, hence sludge problems.
  ‘Every new Hyundai is covered by our 3 year / 100,000 km (whichever comes first)’. Why such a short period unless you buy extra years? Honda is 5 year unlimited warranty, and transferable which seems to be the norm now.

    Good point. That is why cars with relatively more “highway” mileage are generally in better shape than those with the same absolute mileage but instead comprised mostly of “town” miles (i.e. the former being consistent driving in higher gears for longer periods at a time, the latter being inconsistent, stop-start driving going up and down the gears in shirt bursts). Cold starts are one of the worst conditions for internal combustion engines. It offends my sense of mechanical sympathy to see someone starting their car and be moving within about half a second.

    A few years ago whilst travelling from Shanghai to Nanchang I saw a few electric scooter graveyards – fields of around 10 hectares (approx 25 acres) with the scooter piled high. Couldn’t get a picture because at 320kph didn’t have time to sort my phone. I can only imagine how much land will be needed for the dead leaf’s.

  Another reason people may hang onto their cars longer: most people trade in their cars when they buy another one. Will dealers still want to take an older ICE car as a trade in?

  Hyundai makes the Venue which is comparable to the Ioniq. It costs $30,000 -$50k less than the Kona and $16k less than the Ioniq
  
  It takes 7.2l to drive 100km in a Venue
  
  Now let’s make some reasonable assumptions; new cars are kept by the original purchaser (on average) 3-5 years, so let’s say 4 years. NB: If you buy a battery-powered vehicle you want to be moving it well before the battery warranty expires (7-8 years). Petrol is $2.50 a litre. Average usage by NZers is 15,000km pa. Depreciation after 4 years is c50%
  
  Now we’ll do the 4 years TCO figures:
  
  Kona
  Purchase price – $80,000
  Fuel price – $0 (as near as damn it)
  Residual value – $40,000
  TCO after 4 years = $40,000
  Cost per year = $10,000
  
  Ionic
  Purchase price – $46,000
  Fuel price – $7,500
  Residual value – $23,000
  TCO after 4 years = $30,500
  Cost per year = $7,625
  
  Venue
  Purchase price – $30,000
  Fuel price – $10,800
  Residual value – $15,000
  TCO after 4 years = $25,800
  Cost per year = $6,450
  
  So with the Ioniq you’re paying an extra $16k to save $3.3k

      A lot of people, especially in Devonport and Takapuna, around where I live, are obviously more than happy to pay an extra $2,800 over a 4 year period. In fact many pay a lot more than that, given the rapidly increasing number of Teslas that are around, plus a few Audis and Taycans.
      
      The purchasers point out three things; 1) they love the quietness and smoothness of the vehicles, 2) they do the majority of their charging at home, 3) provided they have a vehicle with good range (which is plus 400 km) there is no big hassle in finding charge points for their longer journeys, especially as more charge points are being installed.

        None of those 3 reasons have anything to do with the costs though.
        
        EVs are simply more expensive than their ICE equivalents.
        
        But you are correct, they are much less convenient than a petrol vehicle.
        
        BTW each $1,000 is the equivalent of one and a half week’s take home pay for the average NZ worker.
        
        Your North Shore apocrypha are the same people who would normally buy Porsches etc and had little relevance to ordinary people
        
        As I’ve always said, if you’re in the market for an $80k car you’d be mad not to go electric and be subsidised by the poor

      Which is simply not true. Certainly not of cars built in the last 5 years or so. Tesla has done a huge amount of testing on this issue. Batteries last at least 200,000 km with very little range deterioration.
      
      It is true of early model Nissan Leafs, the first of which came on the market in 2010, with a range that was barely 100 km.
      
      Battery technology has hugely improved in the last 10 years.

        In fact the Tesla battery warranty is 8 years and 100,000 miles (160,000 km) for the base Model 3. It is 150,000 miles for the Model S.
        
        The battery won’t fail as soon as the 8 years is up, no more than cars fail at 3 years when the factory warranty runs out.
        
        Manufacturers warranties are always conservative for rather obvious reasons.

        Wayne – the life of batteries is very dependent on the rate at which they are charged. If you do rapid charges, they will very quickly die. The number is small (<50). What the manufacturers do is put a limit on the number of fast charges a car can do. Do a few rapid charges early on and you will be reduced to doing trickle charging within the year. Makes Auckland to Wellington drive a multi-day trip.

  Don’t forget THIS Govt has the numbers, intent and power to ban all Non-EVs from its roads. All it will take is for Cindy, James and Julie Anne to throw a hissy-fit.
  That said Benedict, I’m of the opinion that no Govt should be legislating to screw the market availability of private or commercial vehicles.

Just for fun I looked at some media articles celebrating Jacinda’s 2017 election win. This is a short feature interview about her views on the “failure of capitalism”.

It is disturbing, but not surprising, that her interventions have failed horribly. Housing and poverty were her priorities but they have got much worse. I was amused by this…

“Ms Ardern said Kiwis are not “feeling the benefits of any form of posterity” and big changes were needed.”

I guess she meant “prosperity” but who knows? I can’t see much “posterity” in store for New Zealand.

The entire article is an evidence free word soup of slogans. Her efforts to “plug the holes of capitalism” have failed. Unequivocally.

Of course all this failure is now drowned out by the buzzing noise of Covid…

So thanks for nothing Jacinda. I’m not feeling much prosperity or posterity.

BTW I am Wellington for the weekend. Shame about the weather. I was having lunch in a cafe with my partner in Lyall Bay. Good food but it was packed and the three staff were run off their feet. The service was slow. I was served by the owner when I paid. I remarked how busy they were. She told me that she used to have four staff on per shift. But she let three employees go after the most recent minimum wage increase.

Those sacked staff won’t be feeling much posterity. They may be in poverdy.

  About the housing crisis. From the 2017 election to the start of covid the social housing waiting list almost tripled. Those on the waiting list are deemed to be in serious housing need, and it is reasonable to see the numbers as a wider housing indicator. For better or worse. Even an indicator of a housing crisis. Can’t blame covid for that.

So cops have had guns pointed at them 18 times since Constable Hunt was shot. It seems almost all the offenders were gang members – I wonder how many were released from prison early or on remand at large. Overall, it doesn’t say much for the government’s plan about removing dangerous guns and making society friendlier. But then we know they have no ability to do anything positive.

  Two events almost back to back provide a very concerning contrast to what’s happening in New Zealand .
  
  The first was the huge turnout ,disruption , attention and indignity of the mobsters funeral , the other was the quiet , poorly attended but sad and dignified memorial for Constable Hunt .

  someone intelligent. motivated and with enough of a back bone and morales compass to do what is right for ALL New Zealanders.
  
  The First thing to do is to stop negotiating
  and communicating with these organisations
  on Anything at all.

I read Mohamed Moustafa’s article in Stuff with some interest (and concern).

He stated that he is unhappy that the Government has not moved on any ‘hate’speech’ law.

He stated that being around white males makes him nervous.

He stated that he feels that he has experienced racism as a Muslim.

I’m as disturbed by these statements as Mohamed is in writing them.

A law about hate speech is not a law which controls the hate, but a law which censors opinion and thought. Welcome to Democracy (warts and all).

Being around Islamic men makes a lot of Westerners nervous. Think back to the radical actions of a few and he’ll be able to see why this is the case.

Islam is also a religion not a race. Or, are only non-white worshippers truly Islamic?

In a Democracy Mohamed is welcome to voice his concerns and opinions. But it also pays to tell the truth and to focus on the real issues rather than ‘porky’s’.

    Statistically, they are right to be nervous around Maori, particularly young Maori males. Anecdotally, there appears to be a weekly night out at the local swimming pool for the Home D crew. A van pulls up with a dozen or so invariably young Maori males who are invariably plastered with bad tatoos. They all have monitoring bracelets around their ankles (apparently waterproof), and there is a palpable sense of suspicion and unease from the presumably law abiding honkies who share the area with them.

      Only 30 or 40 years late, again. You would probably be terrified walking into a phone box if you could find one. Pubs in South Auckland have been closing down at a great rate of knots for a long time, a few small bars that have replaced them. The original in Ellerslie, 2 in Mount Wellington, 1 in Pakuranga at least 1 in Onehunga, a couple Otahuhu, Papatoetoe. gone up to 20 years ago. RSAs, Workingmen’s clubs much the same.

  “Nau mai ki ngā hākinakina o te wā” is something sports reporter Saville usually says every evening on 1 News, and is understood by few, but seems to cause irritation to outright racist anger at the interruption it is to majority English viewing. And Maori fluent in the language probably also think, “Get on with it, and tell us about the Blues.”
  
  It is actually unbelievable that those supporting te reo Maori do not see this causes more opposition to learning the language than it is in any way helpful. But for those who object, the phrases now seem to be getting faster, so waste less time – however become more incomprehensible.
  
  And of course if you do pick up the pronunciation and understand its meaning, how often a day really do you want to say to anyone “Nau mai ki ngā hākinakina o te wā” – “welcome to the sports of the day”?

  I don’t get it. Why can’t we have a Maori TV channel and radio channel with Maori language bulletins? I am unaware of anywhere in the world with this mixed language thing. I find it very disruptive to the point where I hit the off button.
  
  Canada of course has English and French languages. The French in Quebec would go mental if English was sprinkled through their news bulletins.
  
  I suspect this whole thing is unpopular but many people scared to say anything. For example if a public servant objected to the Maori names and the Maori language it would be career ending.

    Māori media has gone backwards. Iwi radio has battled away on the smell of an oily rag. No one wants to say it publicly, but many Māori broadcasters and journalists privately describe Māori TV as a “basket case”. The viewing numbers can be down to a few thousand a night.
    
    And there’s not enough English being spoken on Maori Radio and TV
    
    According to Minister for Māori Development, Willie Jackson, Māori TV’s ratings have fallen away because it lacks good programming – in English.

  – so why not translate those in English as such – “kinship, guardianship and mutual respect, because in fact not to translate them surely breaches manaakitanga, to show a little mutual respect … FFS

Tindall underwrote the purchase of 50 New Zealand-made ventilators at $60,000 each. “I said to the agent, place the order, and you have got my word I will pay for them, if the Government doesn’t,” Tindall said. [1]

Ardern is often not an actual leader, but just a bloody passenger.

Saw photos of a truck with its cab crushed by a container in the POA inland port yesterday morning around 10, but none later in the media. Thought that may have been the fatality but it must have been unmanned as the man killed was a tradie doing forklift maintenance and the 2 injured were not described as drivers. Another assumption I made was that all the fallen containers had been empty but news reports indicated one at least was 30 tonnes gross.
At the time of seeing the photos, the news had not broken that it was actually a tornado and not high winds.

The former Physician to the POTUS from 2013 to 2018, treating and testing both Obama and Trump, and now a Congressman (R) has urged President Biden to take a cognitive test and share the results with the American people.

As he promised to do while campaigning in 2020, albeit in a way that gave very little confidence he’d pass the mental tests at least. He offered to let his faculties be tested and shared with the public in a statement that began by saying “I am going to say something I’m probably not supposed to say.” and struggled to even get out what he meant, but in a rambling, shambolic way he eventually got there.

This first one, by Henry Cooke, was notable for the fact the he never mentioned Shane Jones at all, as a possible reason for NZ First losing a lot of traditional support.
I pointed this out to Stuff in a comment, and described Jones as “pompous , verbose, sneering and entitled” and that that may have been enough to lose voters.
Needless to say they never printed my comment.

It is time for the CAKEFACE Sunday sermon.

Every time I watch TV or open a newspaper, I‘m assaulted by pictures of the Prime Minister gurning. Indeed, as a consequence of over exposure to the gurn, I started to develop a twitch, and thought a rash might be developing.

Consequently, I took the time out to do some research about gurning.

Gurning competitions actually have a proud history, as follows:

“They are held regularly in some villages, with contestants traditionally framing their faces through a horse collar — known as “gurnin’ through a braffin”. The World Gurning Championship takes place annually at the Egremont Crab Fair. The fair dates back to 1267, when King Henry III granted it a Royal Charter.”

Furthermore, and this is where it gets interesting, the Prime Minister has competition:

“Anne Woods (5 December 1947 – 29 March 2015), of Egremont, Cumbria was a British gurner, 28 times the women’s world champion. Her world record was finally ratified by the Guinness Book of Records in November 2010,”

Our Prime Minister might not have any official gurning competitions under her belt like Anne, who was 28 times world champion, but I think she has a good shout as her heir apparent.

The curious thing about our Prime Minister’s gurning is it is regarded as being hugely empathetic. How did this come to pass? What does it all mean? Answers on a postcard…

The next election should be decided on the basis of a cage fight between Judith and Jacinda. It would be like robot wars, only better.

The Crusher has got solid arms and legs, so I imagine that she would try to squeeze the life out of Jacinda, in a suffocating bear hug.

Before you think the contest is unfair, let me remind you of the Prime Minister’s major weapon. When the Crusher gets up close and personal to apply her crushing move, Jacinda could bring her impressive jaws to bear, locking onto the Crusher like a great white shark.

It really could go either way…

I can hear the Labour supporter complaints already. Jacinda is too empathetic and kind to go feral…

This thought lead me to mull over the evidence for this huge empathy that the Prime Minister is supposed to have. Where does this supposition come from?

In terms of empathy, the subject is explored in one of my favourite movies, Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott. His brother had just committed suicide, by jumping off a bridge. Ridley wanted to explore the human condition.

The basic plot involved a “blade runner” (assassin) tracking down bioengineered humanoids known as replicants to terminally “retire” them.

From wiki:

“In order to discover replicants, an empathy test is used, with a number of its questions focused on the treatment of animals – seemingly an essential indicator of one’s “humanity”. The replicants appear to show compassion and concern for one another and are juxtaposed against human characters who lack empathy, while the mass of humanity on the streets is cold and impersonal.”

The empathy test measures bodily functions such as respiration, blush response, heart rate and eye movement in response to questions dealing with empathy.

I decided to watch Jacinda on television, and analyse her like a Voight-Kampff machine, and to test this empathy theory once and for all. Turning off the sound was a huge relief – there was no chanting slogans like a 12 year old to distract me.

Firstly, Jacinda unleashed her enormous leering grin. Then this disappeared, and something quite extraordinary happened. Her forehead erupted, with a spectacle that reminded me of the famous waves at that Hawaiian surfing beach. Skyscraper sized waves rolled across over her forehead, threatening to consume her, in quite remarkable fashion. Next, her mouth started to move. Her lips have a life of their own. Most peoples lips are connected, but Jacinda seems to be able to move different sections of her lips independently, both vertically and horizontally, in a surreal but interesting dance. I was just beginning to regain my composure, when more action unfolded. Her head started to rock, one way, then the other. I grabbed the armrests for support. My head started to tip the same way, so I could keep my equilibrium. Then her head moved again – now she was ducking and diving, bobbing and weaving, like a young Joe Frazier. The effect was like being in a small boat, in choppy water.

What does it all mean? Does this show that Jacinda is indeed extremely empathetic?

I would say that policies and performance and will be pretty much irrelevant to future election results here in NZ.

There are a huge percentage of women (and some wet men) who will vote for Jacinda because of her supposed empathy, irrespective of her policies or performance. It’s a cult.

Ouch.

The return of Winston Peter’s might actually help the National Party at the next Election and if you are anything like me and my dislike for Winston Peters as a Politician you will admire what he is about to attack Jacinda Ardern and Labour with.
Most people will resonate with his topic on how many time people are using Maori names and while the Government will call it racial you can be sure it will attract a percentage of voters back to NZ First.

  He is the one who put her there, gave her the power and encouraged the media to make her a star.

  If he and/or his party get back into parliament, they will be looking to Ms Ardern for some payback for previous services rendered, including the near destruction of the National Party.

      I am not a member of any political party but I do follow David Seymour/ACT on FB.
      A quick look back at the last 6 or so posts shows that one of them generated 91k views (Shaw should apologise).
      Next highest was 78k views (Seymour v Swarbrick)
      These are accompanied by hundreds and some times more than 1000 comments.
      Not all of the comments will be agreeing with the Seymour/ ACT view of things, of course, but it is an indication of ACT’s current appeal.
      Labourites dismissing the ACT supporters as “curmudgeons” is wishful, lazy thinking.

Here’s a thing. Arnold Rimmer and Darth-Ju both claim Prime Minister is increasingly divorced from reality.

But here, the Taxdodger’s Union, closely associated with the ACT Party, has put up and taken down an ad trivialising both the suffering of Christchurch massacre victims and the globally recognised response by Jacinda Ardern. They put up the ad for political purposes. They took it down on the command of Toyota New Zealand.

I ask, who is divorced from reality? These clowns are hard right wing student politicians gone bad. I’d go as far as to say Jordan Williams is severely brain damaged.
