I watched the valedictory speech by James Shaw yesterday. There was much goodwill and singing across the House. So why was I left so unimpressed?

He started off by thanking more than 50 staffers and officials for their dedicated work. 😳 It was a buzzing noise of names. Were all these people legendary or were they just doing their jobs?

The speech was internally focused on politics. Like Julie Ann Genter he comes across as someone who, literally, lives in a Wellington bubble. Not once in the speech did he refer to “New Zealand” or to “New Zealanders”, or to living standards or to prosperity or to economic growth.

The tipping point for me was when he seemed to turn to Metiria Turei in the gallery and say “You deserved far better than you got.”😳 😳

He then thanked Jacinda….

“She is a woman of humility, service, intelligence and integrity. And, she also deserves far better treatment than she has been receiving.””😳😳😳🙄🙄

Not finished yet, he iced the metaphorical cake by telling us that Grant Robertson was one of the greatest politicians of all time.

“In my experience he is one of the most decent, principled and thoughtful people I have ever met and the most talented politician of my generation..” 😭

He made much of the Zero Carbon Act and applauded Chris Luxon and his commitment to the Act. As I have commented repeatedly, it is way too soon to judge the Zero Carbon Act as a success. Nothing has happened yet. 😂My view is that it will collapse in disarray by 2030.

I was struck by this extract from his speech..

“The Greens now look more like contemporary New Zealand than we ever have before.”

He is referring to the ethnic diversity in the Green caucus. In that sense he is correct. However, ethnicity is secondary to competence and intent. When I observe the Greens in action, they offer no ideas that would lift the prosperity of “contemporary New Zealand”. To most people of Chinese ethnicity, a growing demographic group, the Greens will be irrelevant and incomprehensible.

Anyway, I see that James has landed on his feet with a lucrative job in “climate finance”, based in, of course, Wellington. He will fly the world in business class brokering climate finance deals. 🙄

  I’ve never understood why people have liked Shaw he has always struck me as the most dangerous type of politician there is the type that would unthinkingly sacrifice people for the ideology.

      His loyalty to Turei is understandable, sucking up to Luxon makes sense, but sucking up to JA and Grant, WTF … therefore I agree with YuBenYu, the speech was self-aggrandising.
      
      And Mr Yu, you are correct, Net Zero is a con and will be gone. Thanks for listening to his speech for us all, that was kind. I admire your determination.

  I thought be might have set up a gig with his billionaire brother in law Rob Hersov.
  But it seems there’s a new investment firm called Morrison that appreciates his talents.
  Of course, it could be possible that Rob Hersov is behind Morrison but I have no evidence of that.

        He clearly has talents at fulfilling a self-serving agenda (eg. making climate deals and hypocrisy).
        
        But where does he have any competence in doing what he is being paid to do: improve the lives of every New Zealander?

        He set out to achieve agreement to a Zero Carbon Act. He succeeded. He is competent. Whether the Zero Carbon Act is a good idea is a separate matter.

        That failure applied to the entire last Government.
        
        I am not going to debate this forever 🙂 Folk here know what I think of the Zero Carbon Act, so in a sense we are talking semantics.
        
        I see a distinction between James Shaw and other Ministers of the previous Government.
        
        James Shaw – did exactly what he set out to do – competent.
        
        Phil Twyford – enough said.

        I know exactly what you mean, and see that there is a clear difference between Shaw and eg Twyford.
        
        However doing what you set out to do is not the (only) definition of competence.
        
        I could drive at 160kph from Wellington to Auckland, and achieve it. Achieved what i set out to do. Tick. But is that competence? Got there. Real fast.
        
        Or is it sheer stupidity, arrogance, and complete disregard for the safety and health of everyone else?
        
        Shaw was singularly focussed on his one issue. Getting to Auckland as fast as possible. And bugger everyone else. You can call that competence if you like.

    It seems morrison was formed in 1988 , guess we know where all the cash went that was missing when global share markets crashed now. Lots of these type firms rose from the ashes and started to dominate global investment.

      Morrison and co is, IIRC, an investment firm that was part of infraril but for spun off with a broader scope. They are bright people and hard workers – or used to be – so not clear why they would want someone like Shaw.

    Morrison (formerly H.R.L Morrison & Co) is an investment manager. One of its key clients is Infratil. Infratil is publicly listed and is likely to be part of any KiwiSaver funds that include equities (e.g. your Balanced or Growth fund).
    
    Infratil often invests jointly with the NZ Super Fund, with a significant chunk of its (our) assets invested into the worldwide climate scam – the redistribution of capital away from cheap and reliable energy and into expensive and untested energy sources. They call it “energy transition” but its purpose is to make a new class of billionaires who have the right opinions. The edifice will collapse with catastrophic consequences for the world. The test for investors like Infratil and NZSF is whether they can pull some or all of the money while the market value of the scam remains high.
    
    Infratil and NZSF are the poster boys for ESG in New Zealand. So they need a climate bully like Shaw to corral productive capital into the scam.

    While there are more centre-right politicians that go into (or back into) business after parliament, for every Shaw or Robertson on the left getting a nice sinecure after parliament, there is a Tolley or Bennett on the centre-right. There is clearly no incentive to change this, for either of the main parties.

        Thanks for pointing out my lack of specificity JKT. He was highly placed (a deputy director? I heard this on a podcast recently, like to be RCR or perhaps a Leighton Smith episode) within the Gender Identity Service of the Tavistock.

        I have now read the article that you referenced.
        
        I did not pick up a specific bend on gender affirmation on the part of Doocey. I will keep an eye on this one though. I consider this an important issue.
        
        I did not criticise our politicians when they swopped one sort of intervention for a more dangerous approach. At the time I thought they knew best and act on good advice. I accepted the mainstream media rhetoric at the time.
        
        Now that I have delved into the matter I feel betrayed.

      Actually, the BB&H article references a Newstalk ZB interview from April 12 where Doocey himself discusses the issue, together with Megan Woods, and of course, his views are as far left as it is possible to be. He states he is a fan of “gender affirming” healthcare. He says he worked there from 2008-12. I will correct myself – Doocey stated he did NOT work in / with the gender clinic and claims others have lied about his involvement with the gender clinic. He also stated that he had NOT, at the time of the interview, read the Cass report.

In the general debate we get below crap from the radical racist party.

Then in the evening JAG goes out of control and goes over to Nats side and yells and shoves her face in Mat Dooceys.

    At the time of their creation, the Maori seats were not expected to be permanently embedded in our electoral system. They were intended to be temporary and give parliamentary representation to Maori until they met the necessary property qualifications to vote on the common roll. Once universal suffrage was introduced in 1893, the seats had achieved their purpose.
    Yet, the Maori seats survived, as Joseph writes “through indifference and neglect”. When the Royal Commission on the Electoral System was created in 1985, the issue of Maori representation in Parliament came directly under the microscope.
    
    The Royal Commission was specifically directed to consider “the nature and basis of Maori representation in Parliament”. The Commission believed there would be no need for separate Maori representation and the seats should be abolished.

A couple of days ago I commented that Julie Anne Genter was seemingly becoming angry at the transport policies of the new government. Looks like I was correct. 😅

The reality is that her views on transport and lifestyle choices are alien to the vast majority of people. Yesterday she showed by her actions in Parliament that she is enraged that her world views have been rejected.

Disturbingly, it is quite plausible that she could be Minister of Transport in a future government and so inflict much damage.

Incidentally, I have casually followed the transport projects in Australia over the last 20 years. In the case of Sydney these have been transformative. The transport plans seem to be enduring and receive bipartisan support. They are not upended by madness if a State Government changes.

        When cycling there is only one traffic law that I break. If I am at a red light and I am 100 percent sure that it is safe to go I do so. This is because I can get ahead of the cars stacked up behind me. This also benefits the drivers because they don’t need to navigate around me as I take off. In Christchurch, this will typically be at low traffic cross streets.
        
        I can see the contrary argument. If you are teaching children to cycle in the city the message should be don’t go through red lights.

        BY, yes there are many that do generally obey the law. I am somewhat like you in that I too will go through reds when there is no traffic.
        
        But far too many:
        * blow through stop signs even when there’s traffic around,
        * ride abreast

        If there is a cyclist coming towards me ON the footpath , I move into the centre of said path and then they need to go around me. I am b..ggered if I will give way to drongos expecting right of way.

        That is what Jethrod is talking about – not dual use paths.
        
        There are some dual use paths that I occasionally walk on. Cyclists coming through often harrass walkers and zoom past very close and dangerously.
        
        Dual use paths are there for shared use. They are not high speed trails for cyclists.
        
        Cyclists wanting to go fast etc should bugger off to velodromes.

      It is a great transport option to go to hospital when in labour (twice) and you want to use your baby’s birth to virtue signal on social media and get international media coverage.
      Remarkably cycling is not so good an option to then return home whilst ‘saddle sore’ with bubs stuffed in the front basket.
      So no doubt the father (God help him, should someone raise a welfare check?) drove to and from hospital, thus negating any environmental benefit of the original saintly cycle ride. In fact he probably had to drive there again to pick up the cycle (after hosing it down), but JAG got her coverage so all good.

        Whilst no concrete evidence (as hanging outside Wellington hospital to get a picture of post-birth MPs getting in a car would be weird), I think it’s very very safe to say she didn’t cycle home.
        There’s two reasons for this. 1) If she was happy to get hubby to take a picture of her going to hospital, there’s no way she would have spurned the opportunity of the second picture. And 2) logic. Saddle sore would not be an adequate description of how it would make her feel.

  Many cities do have excellent public transport systems, but that requires two things that NZ does not have:
  * high populations
  * high population densities
  
  Even “huge” Auckland is a paltry million people and would only rank as the 6th largest city in Australia.

      A lot of that is due to the definition of a “city” being different.
      
      For example Los Angeles City only has 3.8M people, but the Los Angeles county has 88 cities in it and the total LA metro area has over 12 million.

    What matters when you’re dealing with issues like public transport is the size of the metro – not the individual cities within it.
    
    For the purposes of figuring out transport needs etc, LA is a metro of over 12 million, not a city of 3.8 million.

    The video of the incident is rather revealing. Not only did Genter lose her cool in front of Matt Doocey, she then went around to the side of where he was seated to continue her tirade. Further invading his personal space and in essence, crossing the boundary.
    
    Genter’s behavior was disgraceful and an affront to Parliament.
    
    I would go as far as saying she needs to resign.
    
    After all that is what the Left would demand if it were a male National MP acting like that in front of a Green female MP.

      Mentally unstable people can be unpredictable.
      This MP could have had more than a pamphlet in her hand eg pepper spray or worse.
      Might sound far fetched – but that is the kind of thing that could happen these days.
      If I had been Mr Doocey I would have been alarmed to see an agitated person push around to my seating area shouting and clutching something in their hand.
      Again, unlikely to be any real consequences for a Green Party MP.

        Very good points and IIRC Matt Doocey admitted he suffered from mental health trauma from when he was younger (hence his dedication in becoming NZ’s first Minster responsible for mental health).
        
        So I hope Ms Genter didn’t trigger anything again for Mr Doocey? Considering she would have known about his past (after all it is in the public domain)?
        
        Anyway talking of Ms Genter she has form when it comes to anger management issues. Remember when she flipped out angrily in 2017?

      This needs to go in front of the privileges committee and the government needs to use their majority to punish this woman.
      
      When Labour and Greens were in power we had a couple of complaints where Labour used their majority to ignore obvious breaches of the code of conduct (the education minister actively lying to parliament). Now National has the majority on the committee, they need to follow Labours lead.
      
      Before anyone says, the privileges committee is politically neutral, it may have been but Labour broke that and changed the rules. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

      Meanwhile NZ mental hospitals are jam-packed full of patients and hurting from shortages of nurses and psychiatrists. They don’t have beds for addicts directed there by Doocey’s team.
      
      Surely Shane Reti, as Minister of Health, is keeping an eye on Doocey. Especially since the storm brewing up over Tavistock in England where Doocey had the role of “Assistant Director of Education and Training”.

      There was an NZCPR article this week listing a whole lot of things that we are paying iwi for. Billions of dollars for “using their river” or “using their lake to store water for hydro energy”. No wonder we have a cost of living crisis with the money added on to pretty much every part of our lives, indirectly.     It’s not the universities per se, it’s the protests by the students that could completely undermine Israel’s ethnic cleansing and land grab. Without American backing, Israel cannot wage (and certainly can’t expand) its war. That’s why American public opinion is so crucial, because without it, Israel is on its own. Part of this is having an American conservative media dominated by Jews telling an American audience why Zionism is so important and advancing these interests.
    
    You may think these protests are insignificant, but the Jews obviously don’t think so. Netanyahu is out there publicly telling America they must stop the protests, which speaks volumes on its own. Why should the PM of Israel care about US students protesting Israel? He cares because America is the instrument Israel uses to achieve its aims.
    
    Jewish power in the US has now gone mask-off, because it has had to. Its existence has become unavoidable. That is how important it is to not allow the sentiments to spread and American public opinion go against the Jews who rely on American treasure (and often blood) to advance Israel’s interests. They’ve got to crush these protests as quickly as possible, but in so doing, people with a brain can perceive that Jewish interests always come first in America, or at the least, nothing is done to harm those interests.
    
    The most obvious case is comparison with BLM in 2020, where the country burned for 3 months and riots occurred every night. Hardly anything was done. Contrast this to 2024, and they’re sending in the cops and even talking about sending in the National Guard after only a week or so, because Jewish interests are being harmed.

        In my youth the original definition of Indigenous was ;’Originating, growing, or produced in a certain place or region. synonym: native’ as per my post above.
        
        We were taught at School that only Australian Aborigines fitted that description being ‘of and sprung from the land’ and that Maori were immigrants here- granted they were here first.
        
        The definition got changed and your link shows that change. So in modern usage you are right.
        Personally I suspect the change was made because it became useful for political purposes. But then, I’m a cynic….

        He talks about “gaining residency”. He was born in Mexico. He would only be a New Zealand citizen if his mother had applied for him to be so. IIRC the window of becoming a New Zealand citizen by virtue of a parent being a New Zealand citizen closes when you turn 18 years old. He would not automatically have gained citizenship at birth. And if he was not yet a citizen at 18, it is too late – he needs to apply for citizenship like any other migrant.

  That is what their support base expects of them, so every time they misbehave their support goes up.

        Last week, former publisher David Pecker, who testified as the first witness in the trial, told the court that he would communicate with Trump through his office phone and “infrequently” on his cell phone. But mostly, Pecker said he was told to communicate with Trump through Cohen.
        Upon meeting Cohen in 2007, Pecker was informed that “all of the contacts that I had with Mr. Trump, now my contact should go through Michael Cohen.”
        “If anything ever came up to tell Mr. Trump about, if there were any rumors in the marketplace about Mr. Trump or his family…I would call Michael Cohen directly,” Pecker recalled for the jury.’
        
        So its feasible Trump has plausible deniability
        The whole thing is a stretch. The DOJ had already declined to Prosecute.
        Say, isn’t keeping Trump in Court so he cant Campaign, Election interference?

8 Months ago, Tim van de Molen was stood down from all his portfolios after ‘threatening behaviour’ towards Labour MP Shannen Halbert during a Select Committee hearing.

In the report in to this occurrence, which took place behind closed doors, the Privileges Committee stated:

“Mr van de Molen’s conduct in this case cannot be condoned as normal or acceptable. We accept that he considers he did not intend to threaten or intimidate Mr Halbert. But the combination of factors in this incident – Mr van de Molen’s physical positioning, his words, tone, and failure to move aside when asked – justify a finding that his conduct was objectively threatening.”

Now the circumstances of this incident were disputed, and were heavily skewed by individual perceptions of who was doing what, but that was the final report.

Given that Ms Genter’s transgressions occurred within the debating chamber, in full view of all members of the house, and was televised no less, I would expect nothing less than an identical sanction to be applied in this case. There is ample precedent.

No wonder James Shaw left. The Greens are a basket case!

Double-glazed windows mean the classrooms are ‘deadly silent’ when the door is closed.

Mr Hipkins would do well to focus on the quality of his own party politicians and those in the other outfits he would support at any cost to regain political power.
Further, I am sure he would have accepted Peters into a Labour coalition (if he had to and it was offered) with open arms.

A very funny front page picture in the Waikato Times this morning headlined “Passengers want Te Huia to stay”.
Unfortunately all the passengers shown are old age pensioners enjoying free trips to Auckland and back, thanks to their Gold Cards. Of course our fearless reporter doesn’t mention this.
The reasons given for wanting Te Huia are ‘the chance to snack at a cafe or crochet en route’. Nothing to do with it being free.
Sounds like a lovely outing for the oldies but should the taxpayer be forking out hundreds of thousands of dollars for their free junket?

  * Bus riders want bus ticket subsidies to continue.
  
  Of course nobody that rides the train on a regular basis is going to want it shut down or pay the full unsubsidised price.
  
  It would be cheaper and better for the environment (on the basis of generating less CO2) to fly them to Auckland by helicopter. Ask them if they would prefer that.
  
  Alternatively ask them if they are prepared to pay what the service costs: around $500 a seat.

  The southern border situation looks/sounds like a major disaster. A number of ‘Red’ States have now banned “illegals” from their State. Various estimates of the numbers coming through each day, no one really knows, but it seems like 10’s of thousands each month. Reports of hospitals being overwhelmed by migrants that can not speak a word of English.

  Are they really “mass riots” or are they protests that have become violent because of the authorities breaking them up by force due to political pressure from the Israel Lobby?
  
  This is analagous to the Parliament Protest: they were peaceful demonstrations right up until the Police were sent in to violently disperse what was a politically embarrassing situation.
  
  I think we all learned a lot that day, and we should be taking similar lessons in this case.

    The Universities have been surprisingly slow to do anything.

I think you are wrong about the Parliament Protest (I was there).

It was very peaceful and extremely well-organised until 2-3 days before it ended. Towards the end, the make up of the protesters changed, and more and more people who looked like they were ready for a confrontation turned up. At that point, many of the peaceful protesters saw the writing on the wall and left.

This is not to say the authorities did the right thing. MPs, and Speaker Mallard in particular, were at fault for collectively agreeing not to engage with the protesters while they were main a peaceful, legitimate protest.

Watched a bit of Parliament earlier. I see they let the ‘Member-for-Tijuana’ ask a question. First and only one for the week.

Anyway, I did a quick calc on the back of my serviette. With approx 20 sitting weeks each year, and given he gets given say one oral question a week, that works out it’s costing taxpayers $10,300 every time he rises to his feet.

No wonder there’s frontline Police Officers out there thinking of chucking it in and joining the Green Party 🙁

Slavery and colonialism did not make Britain rich, and may even have made the nation poorer, a new study has found, reports the Telegraph.

Profits from the slave trade were concentrated in a few families while the nation footed the bill for extra military and administrative spending, writes Kristian Niemietz, of the Institute of Economic Affairs, in a new book.

Profits from slavery and colonialism were not large enough to seriously affect macroeconomic aggregates such as Britain’s investment rate and capital formation.

Niemietz says: “The transatlantic slave trade was no more important for the British economy than brewing or sheep farming, but we do not usually hear the claim that ‘brewing financed the Industrial Revolution’ or ‘sheep farming financed the Industrial Revolution’.”

Davidson wouldn’t answer whether Genter had displayed similar behaviour in the past or had breached the party’s expectations of behaviour. She was limiting herself to commenting on the actions that took place last night.

    “My income has been easily halved,” she said.
    
    Last week, Genter stopped by and Newcombe said the pair got into a heated exchange about Genter’s advocacy for the cycleways.
    
    “She was very intimidating. She pulled out her phone, she put the phone camera right in my face and I was like ‘Okay, you need to leave now’ and then she started yelling and screaming over me that I didn’t care about her kids cycling,” Newcombe said.

      The lack of parking severely impacts business
      Several years ago they took away the parks outside a Dairy at the top of Symonds St
      I recall wanting to stop to buy water but had to park in the car park further down
      When I went in I asked if the lack of parking had hurt his business.
      He said it had dropped by a third.
      Looking around I could see that the shelves had gaps where stock hadnt been replaced and I realised he was cashing stock in to pay to live.
      The guy was standing there with his young child alongside him
      That policy destroyed his livelihood
      And yes, he is gone now
      But zealous ***** like Genter dont care
      Its F***ing disgraceful
      They keep wanting to do it too

      There hasn’t been car parking outside that shop in Newtown since at least 2009. Anyone can check Streetview on Google Maps, which has an archive of photos going back that far.
      Also the current photo shows a sign on the shop next door claiming 50 car parks have been removed.
      The current satellite map of that street was from before the installation of the cycleway and by my count there were only 20 parks removed way down the road near Hall St which is 350m away
      I wonder who was yelling at who?

Normally, I would have though Julie Ann Gentry would be untouchable and the media would rally around her and defend her. However, it appears the Green leadership must have given the “green-light” for the media to go after her. It looks like we might have a by-election as the Greens are that delusional.

  I have to admit I do find it interesting Hipkins calling for Winston to be fired. Yet an mp who has it now appears to be an anger problem, bullied an mp, bullied a business owner, no call for her to resign or be fired. But then I have to remind myself, labour have a well established history of mp’s who are bullies.
