Imagine being so down on the world that you spend the first part of it cacking evilly as you downtick some perfectly-innocuous posts, eh?

This one likely included!

A great, safe and peaceful day to you all – it has dawned overcast and unwarm here in Wellington but, hey, I really think I prefer it that way.

BBQ lunch (mucho seafood, huge slab of steak that won’t see much grill time at all, heh heh, salads, pav, fresh fruit salad) with no need to hide under beach umbrellas, backyard Cricket with the littlies with little risk of sunburn (I am gonna beat the little basta oops wee treasures this year, I tells thee!), a few good wines, the annual family Trivial Pursuit battle, a Thanksgiving-style recitation from everyone (toddler to Great Gran) of their Highlight of the Year and What They Were Most Thankful For In That Year, a slow twilight walk along the beach, a watching of Mrs Queen’s Christmas address…

Heaven…

Sweet pic, David! Pray plant one sloppy kiss on DPF Jnr on moi’s behalf. Hey, its Christmas, plant one on the baby’s Mum , too. Just the one, mind…

Merry Xmas from Viking Land.
Had a wee chat to Father before he left on his new Rocket Lab propelled sleigh. (Goes like Hell I must say).
Father reckons that he will have something for most of you BUT. if you have been naughty on KB you might get a dummies prize.

He was reloading up again at the Warehouse at midnight, just because they are open on line so he will keep the parcels flowing unless of course they have to go to NZ Post in which case his deliveries will be late.
Unfortunately now that the NZ Police have tightened the booze laws he won’t be able to drink all the beer you leave out for him.
Even though he does very little driving for the rest of the year he doesn’t want to have his license taken off him.

He is sorry that he won’t be able to chat with JK this year, finds AA hard to bother with and has just crossed McCully of his to visit list.
Must go now the Elves need feeding.

Classic Kiwi Xmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas; there wasn’t a sound.
Not a possum was stirring; no-one was around.
We’d left on the table some whitebait and beer,
Hoping that Santa Claus soon would be here;
We children were snuggled up safe in our beds,
While dreams of pavlova danced ’round in our heads;
And Mum in her nightie, and Dad in his made of corduroy
Had just settled down to watch TV the movie boy
When outside the house a mad ruckus arose;
Loud squeaking and banging woke us from our doze.
We ran to the screen door, peeked cautiously out,
Snuck onto the deck, then let out a shout.
Guess what had woken us up from our snooze,
But a rusty old Ute pulled by eight mighty stags
The cheerful man driving was giggling with glee,
And we both knew at once who this plump fella must be.
Now, I’m telling the truth it’s legit not a lie!
Those eight Stags fairly soared through the sky.
Santa leaned out the window to pull at the reins,
And encouraged the stags, by calling their names.
‘Now Ropata! Now, Holmesy! Now, Richie and Shane!
On Edmund! On, Winston! On, Paddles and Wayne!
Park up on that water tank. Grab a quick drink,
I’ll scoot down the kowhai tree. Be back in a wink!’
So up to the tank those eight Stags flew,
With the Ute full of toys, and Santa Claus too.
He slid down the Kowhai tree and jumped to the ground,
Then in through the window he sprang with a bound.
He had bright sunburned cheeks and a West Coasters beard.
A jolly old fella was how he appeared.
He wore red stubby shorts and old jandals on his feet,
And a dark brown possum skin hat to battle the heat
His eyes – bright as Kaiteriteri waters – Oh! How they twinkled!
And, like a Tuatara, his skin was quite wrinkled!
His shirt was stretched over a round bulging puku
When he moved his tummy rolled like jelly too
A fat stack of prezzies he flung from his back,
And he looked like a Tramper unfastening his pack.
He spoke not a word, but bent down on one knee,
To position our goodies beneath the yule tree.
Fishing rod and Rugby ball shapes for us two.
And for Dad, tongs to use on the new barbeque.
A mysterious package he left for our Mum,
Then he turned and he winked and he held up his thumb;
He strolled out on deck and his ‘stags came on cue;
Flung his sack in the back and prepared to shoot through.
He bellowed out loud as they swooped past the gates-
Have a sweet as kiwi Christmas to you and your mates!

Our grandson, Magnus, born 15.9.16 is with us for Christmas together with his two parents. Magnus is better looking than Benjamin.
But any doting grandfather would tell you that.
My wife is such a hoarder that she kept some our childrens’ baby clothes. I was presented with two photos, suitably mounted. One was our daughter and the other Magnus; both wearing the same outfit that had been purchased from Mothercraft, an English babywear place, 35 years ago!!
The old photo looks like the clothes have faded, but that is the difference between photographic technology in the past 35 years.
