At 11am today (the 11th of November) let’s pause to remember the approx 6 million allied troops who lost their lives in WWI, the ‘war to end all wars’. This in addition to the millions wounded and missing.

The total casualties of that horrific conflict were about 40 million in combatant troops as well as civilians who were either killed, wounded, missing or died from disease.

The armistice was a truce which came into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh month of 1918. The actual end of hostilities (although it took months before the final treaty was signed at Versailles).

Let us remember.

    Holy: Well said…On this somber day of remembrance that is a particularly apt reminder…
    
    Whenever I read of some snowflake complaining that he or she “doesn’t feel safe”, I think about a member of a bomber crew in WW II telling his captain that he couldn’t fly tonight “because I feel particularly unsafe going to X”… One quick way to get you off ops and into a pysch hospital I guess…except it would never have occurred to any of those brave men to do such a thing.

        Yes and it’s gutless. My Grandfather fought in WW 1, he arrived in France in June 1917, as a gunner in 11 Battery, 3rd Brigade. This was immediately before the last big battle at Paschendale, he was 17 years old. 2700 Kiwis died in those engagements at Messines and Paschendale so for the absolute wankers who would down tick these comments, crawl away to the hole you should be in you do not deserve to have benefited from the sacrifices those young men made.

I wonder if like Muttonbird it’s borne out of dissatisfaction with your life and unhappiness with the way things have worked out and the knowledge you have no way of getting where you imagined yourself being when you were young?

        Neither Clark nor Goff did that. Anyway, as you would know if you had ever bothered to read the classic New Zealand book We Will Not Cease by Archibald Baxter, ordinary soldiers had no problem with “conchies.” Baxter writes of how the soldiers and policemen who had him in their custody nearly always were kind and supportive of his stance and his actions; they recognized that he, not they, had shown real courage in resisting the bullying compulsion of the state.
        
        The problem in the Great War, just as it is the problem now, was the vengeance of the state—i.e., the politicians and their sycophants in the press.

  The 1918 armistice marked a temporary pause. The conflict resumed in earnest in September 1939 with even greater destruction. The end however may be in sight as Teresa May prepares to capitulate to German hegemony later this week. Britain’s time as a nation State governed by the consent of its people is rapidly drawing to a close.

    I agree with you that there weren’t really two world wars, but one. But I think the world war of the 2oth century actually ended in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet empire. Most of the major conflicts were part of a broader ideological battle, including the Korean and Vietnamese wars.

    The problem with the UK and the United States of Europe is that the enemy is within. It is all the wimpy politicians (like Cameron, May, Hague, Blair and Major) who believe/listen/follow duplicitous politicians/bureaucrats and businessmen like Heath/Heseltine/Clarke in the line that Britain will be prosperous if it signs up to the European project.
    
    The duplicitous line that Britain will be prosperous and needs the EU couldn’t be further from the truth. What has always been the case is that a few businessmen, their shareholders and their own businesses have been prosperous while the rest of the UK pays for it.

KiwiBuild at threat of going ‘KiwiBust’ over ‘plummeting popularity’

Mr Twyford is scrambling to justify his flagship policy by saying odds are better than Lotto. Unfortunately that scrambling undermines his claim of plenty of demand.

I see Ms Collins has been asking a lot of written questions about the location of Kiwibuild homes contracted (3375 as of today). Mr Twyford’s response – sod off, commercially sensitive. Huh? What could be commercially sensitive about locations of homes already under contract? Enquiring minds ….

Number pre-qualified – 338 in the below article but the official number is 214. That doesn’t mean much in practice, just that they can enter a ballot. Even if they win, the applicants might not complete that purchase for any number of reasons. Interested to know how many ballot winners drop out of the sale.

73 under construction so those pre-qualified could get 3 each? Against the rules, but as we have seen, the rules can change. Desperation is the new mother of invention.

  That’s a very inaccurate description of the post.
  
  There’s been a lot of discussion by journalists and media commentators about why one MP remains unnamed (which is ridiculous because everyone knows who she is).
  
  Ross has proven himself to be an untrustworthy MP, so badly that only Winston Peters will do him a proxy favour, and there’s good evidence he has abused his poaer as an MP in local body politics (he has apologised for his behaviour there).
  
  But there are important questions answered only in a round about way excluding names but knowing who is being talked about, that raise important issues for politics and for journalism.
  
  If journalists decide what information to not to divulge because it suits their own interests, who holds power to account?

We need some good, honest, real, unbiased journalism from people who will do some investigating and not pander to this COL by sweeping things under the carpet. Heather du Plessis Allan will be on the persona non grata list for the Ninth Floor today. She’s put the boot into ILG and the PM. She closes off thus:

There are three reasons the PM needs to sack Lees-Galloway. First, few are going to have much faith in future immigration decisions he makes. Second, he’s made Jacinda Ardern and Deputy PM Winston Peters look bad. The PM stuck her neck out for him with her “read between the lines” defence of his decision. She’s wasted political capital on him. Third, he’s making this Government look inept. Again.

I say again because it’s a recurring theme. From the start, ministers have looked either out of their depth, run off their feet or like student politicians who haven’t clocked that they’re in real-life government. Policies weren’t ready to go. Clare Curran didn’t understand the boundaries of public office. The PM didn’t know what GDP stood for.

It’s nice to look like a bunch of hipsters. Love the beards. Love the designer clothing. Love the recycling vibe. Love the Instagrammable photos in New York. Would love it even more if they could look like they knew what they were doing. It’s been more than a year.

Sacking Lees-Galloway is a tough one for the PM. It’s not a good look having to sack a third minister in three months. But it’s surely better than letting him stay, and telling the public that this kind of sloppiness is just fine in her Government.

Surely she’ll want to signal that she expects more than this.

      Dear Phil,
      
      This Prime Minister job is really good fun, so many parties and everybody says such nice things. I don’t want the fun to end. But right now there are a few things that are getting me a little worried and I might have to appear nasty and horrid, which I don’t like because it makes me look like a nasty school girl.
      The first worrying thing was there weren’t any nice stories about me and baby Neve, don’t the papers know how important it is that New Zealanders get to see photos of and hear all about Neve?
      
      The second horrible thing is that mean stories keep on being printed about Iain, and now they have started writing horrible stories about KiwiBuild. Last week at our conference and with the help of our friends in the media we were meant to change the headlines away from the nasty news about the government to news stories about what we are promising to do and have yet to do, like helping the Maori people and doing more to encourage TeReo.
      
      Instead when I read the papers, I read Barry’s wifey (I thought Uncle Winnie said Barry would make sure Heather stayed in line?) being horrid in her column and writing that I should sack Iain.
      
      Why?
      
      Iain did nothing wrong, he made the decision he was asked to make. His only mistake was he did not bury the decision until it was too late for any other course of action once the Czech was out of jail.
      
      Now we’ve got a review being done by INZ, about what information they gave Iain in the file to support the deportation. As we now know Iain didn’t read the ghastly big file, so it is irrelevant what information was or wasn’t in the file, if Iain didn’t read the file how was he to know what questions to ask?
      
      So, when the review findings come back, they’ll point to Iain not doing his “job”, but he did, he made the decision we wanted, it was just not the decision they expected.
      
      It’s so unfair on Iain because I’ll then have to tell him off for doing what we told him to do, which was not to do what he was suppose to do.
      
      What do you think I should do? I so, hate putting on that pained school girl look, looking like I’ve done everything possible, that I’ve done nothing wrong and then I have to look tough and deal to Iain. That is so mean, because it makes me look ugly.
      
      The other report that they keep talking about is that Wally Haumaha promotion. I do not understand what we did wrong here? Uncle Winnie told us that Wally was a good guy and the right man for the job, so I appointed him. But then all these nasty women start saying Wally is truly horrible, Uncle Winnie says he’ll fix it, but still I hear people saying really horrid things about Wally and his connections with Winnie. Don’t they know, they are just good friends? Anyhow the report comes back this week and Stuart will have to be seen to be strong with it when he buries it, otherwise Uncle Winnie will be very angry.
      
      Finally, I read another article in the NZ Herald. It seems they wrote a story that was given to them by that nasty old battle axe Judith Collins. That women just will not rest with her attacks on you and your wonderful schemes to “fix Auckland”. Please tell me that the story I read was not correct. Who would be silly enough to go and sign a contract to build over 3,000 homes and not know where they are going to be built? There must be a mistake in that story, surely there are more than 388 people qualifying for KiwiBuild, you told me we needed 100,000 KiwiBuild homes over 10 years. Even to me, and I’m not good with numbers, but there don’t seem to be enough people wanting our 100,000 homes. I’m a little worried by your numbers.
      
      Then if I look at your other portfolio thingie, as Minister of Transport I am worried you don’t seem to know what you are doing and that you are going to waste a lot of money in Auckland when we don’t need to. You told me to say “that Auckland’s Transport is a basket case” and that by having the tram to the airport and Sky/SeaPaths we will fix Auckland’s transport problems. I know I am not that clever, but please remind me how is a tram from the city to the airport and Sky/SeaPath going to solve the peak hour traffic flows that don’t go to the airport? Or how is all the spending in Auckland going to help the people of the Kapiti Coast or Northland? Please Phil, reassure me that you are really not a Twitford and that I’ll have to sack you for being incompetent, because after I sack Iain, I wouldn’t want to have to sack you.

      I know it has been a difficult few weeks for you, because until Neve start teething or crawling, there will not be an opportunities to put happy stories in the papers about Neve. Just wait to the holidays, they are not far away and there will be plenty of opportunities for happy family stories for Kiwis to read and be very grateful for you.
      
      Regarding those bad news stories, you really shouldn’t worry your silly little head about them. Winnie has assured us we will be okay, all we have to do is do as he says.
      
      For example with regards to Iain, the line is:
      1. Iain gave his decision full consideration;
      2. Iain evaluated all information in front of him – he just had to make sure the fill was not in front of him; and
      3. With the information he saw (note nobody is asking what information Iain saw), he would make the same decision again.
      
      Regarding the Wally Haumaha appointment, once again we use the same responses as in Iain’s situation.
      1. As per the information you received…
      2. You all evaluated all relevant information in front of you; and
      3. Based on the same information and in the same circumstances you would make the same decision.
      
      Who is to say in either Iain’s case or with you and Wally Haumaha that you evaluated all information and would have come to different decisions?
      
      As for myself, why should you doubt me? John Campbell did so much work at RNZ proving there were homeless people needing houses, why should we doubt him? The people are just shy and have put there names down, but we’ll find them and we’ll build them their houses.
      
      As for Auckland’s bad transport, why are you doubting me? Auckland is a big city (well by NZ standards), so it stands to reason that Auckland’s traffic will be a basket case especially when you compare it to Ruawai.
      
      Have faith, the holidays will be here soon and you can work on your happy smile for next year’s Waitangi celebrations. It’ll all be fine.

Police will not be taking part in Auckland’s Pride Parade in February – because they say they have been banned from wearing their uniforms. Instead, the Pride Festival board told officers they must wear T-shirts instead of their uniforms, says Inspector Tracy Phillips.

      I’m broadly a libertarian and an individualist, which puts me at odds with most of the ‘gay community’.
      
      That said, there are a decent minority within the minority, who aren’t beholden to the leftie rubbish and the Ardern love fest. A lot of gays are high earners and don’t see the upper and middle classes as our enemy. Indeed, most of the homophobic bile I have been subjected to comes from the working class and the underclass. I’ve said it here before but when gays ask me why I don’t support Labour, I respond that I don’t particularly want to give away a large proportion of my earnings to enable bogan scum who called me a faggot at school to become grandparents by 30.

All Blacks were poor at times and Aaron Smith looks a shadow of his past self but England were very impressive; that first 30 minutes of theirs was arguably the best I’ve seen from any team this year. I returned from Aussie late Friday. I had been to Flemington in the rain on Tuesday, and did ok on the punt.
But I also spent a lot of time and money drinking grog and chatting to common Aussies. I found a profound distrust of politicians amongst them. This latest Scott Morrison elevation to Prime Minister has pissed them off in a big way. Aussies have always criticised their politicians, but this time there was a real hatred brewing there.
I wonder if a Donald Trump emerged there, that he might find a huge receptive audience. No, not Pauline Hansen; she is another sick joke.
Let’s see how this plays out.

I was looking up Poppy Day, and apparently, NZ was originally slated to have Poppy Day on the 11th of November, just like the rest of the world, but the ship carrying the poppies didn’t arrive in time, so they decided to have it on ANZAC Day, where it has remained ever since…

Colonel Alfred Moffatt, suggested the poppy idea to the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association (as the Returned Services’ Association or RSA was originally known) in September 1921. The Returned Soldiers’ Association placed an order for 350,000 small and 16,000 large silk poppies, all made by Madame Guérin’s French Children’s League.

The Returned Soldiers’ Association planned to hold its first Poppy Day appeal around the time of Armistice Day 1921 as other countries were doing. The ship carrying the poppies from France arrived in New Zealand too late for the scheme to be properly publicised. The association decided to wait until the next Anzac Day, 1922.

They announced a moment’s silence at 11am at the Shopping Mall I had popped into this morning- Which I thought was a nice touch.
90% of people were courteous and respectful and either stood or went about their business in silence.
There were a couple of young ‘Millennial’ age girls sitting in the Foodcourt- To the disgust of quite a few of us one of them started yelling something about ‘We shouldn’t glorify murder!’ and ‘Fuck Soldiers’ while her friend laughed loudly and scoffed chips.

And the really sad thing is that quite a few soldiers died on that last day, even after the armistice was announced to them.
They carried on fighting, sometimes of necessity and sometimes due to some officer wanting to make a name for himself by capturing a bridge or whatever.

Thanks to our wonderful Kelvin, we now have hundreds fewer prisoners costing us $110,000 a year each.
Apparently the only thing holding them up was their illiteracy that prevented them filling out bail forms correctly.
But what the hell is wrong with this country that produces hundreds maybe thousands of illiterate people in the 21st century?
If their parents are so useless they can’t ensure their kids are educated, they should NOT be paid to breed.

I can only assume there is a big one coming which will majorly undermine Jacinda’s credibility, if the minions are at it this early.

Xenophobia – surely an election-winner for an otherwise incompetent and discredited administration, I mean it’s worked for Winston for ages.
