A recent piece of correspondence.

Dear Prime Minister,

I am looking for some advice on establishing a small business. I contacted the Small Business Council, and Mr Powell suggested I write to you as you have particular expertise in this field.

I want to get into selling lawnmowers. I’ve heard there’s great money in this line, and that I could meet some really influential people.

So my questions are:

1. What sort of customers should I target? Should I be happy with regular New Zealanders, or is there merit in specifically targeting those lawn-loving politicians, media folks, and Labour youth?

2. I understand that my customer list will be a really important asset. Could you suggest ways to protect this, and to maximise its value? Should I keep a copy with my lawyer?

3. What type of insurance should I take out for my business?

4. Do you have any friends, or family members who might need a lawnmower or two? With your endorsement I’m certain of some regular customers

5. And finally, I’m not a New Zealand resident. I really, really want to become one. What’s the best way for me to be guaranteed residency?

As a token of my gratitude I will set aside a complimentary, high-end lawnmower for you and your family. I could deliver this to your home, or even drop it off at the next Labour Youth camp. Let me know what works best for you.

  Found this interesting from a story on stuff by Kim Knight 29/1/17 The house she shares with partner and television fishing show presenter Clarke Gayford is a work in progress. Most of the internal doors have been sent away for painting and her dad (New Zealand’s high commissioner to Niue) has not-so-subtly given them a lawnmower for Christmas. A spindly white tinsel tree boasts a single, homemade decoration; the armchairs are turned away from the television.

  Dear K.K….Thankyou for your kind letter. I am surprised that the Small Business Council referred your enquiry to Comrade Powell our $million a year president of the Doctors Union. Mr Luxon or the new boss of Fonterra have greater expertise in the small business area.I am not sure that there is a future in mowing lawns and why work at all My Government will provide. The Governments long term plans are that I should anounce the banning of lawn mowing at a future United Nations Forum. Grass absorbs Greenhouse Gases and it is our intention to redistribute resource from people who cut grass to those who don’t as longer grass absorbs more gas.
  Customer lists are outdated. I suggest you keep a Donation to the Labour Party list, a copy should not be sent to a lawyer for secrecy. Labour have lawyers who will keep it secret, after all who could you trust more than Comrades Winston, Andrew, and David.
  Don’t worry about Insurance .My new kind Government will payout on any claims whether you are ensured or not. The rich pricks who do pay can have their premiums increasedto subsidise those who don’t.
  All Comrades are my friends but we reside in Ivory Towers without laws and ‘Families are a dated concept not conducive to diversity.They are on the banning list.
  To qualify for residency it would be best if you belonged to an international drug distribution gang. arrived in the country with a false identity.Hold up a bank with some patched members of your NZ Chapter,and donated a percentage to our party. It could cost a bit more though if you give the Missis the biff. Don’t worry if you get locked up. For a party koha Andrew will have you out in a jiff.

    It took Chavez 15 years to sink this country into the mire, it’s take one year here to give New Zealanders a hint of what socialism is capable of. Luckily the COL is so incompetent, it couldn’t supervise a pissup in a brewery, let alone a Youth Camp. (they couldn’t do that either!)

Kids who are expelled or suspended from school are 100 times more likely to suicide or kill themselves in car crashes.

Therefore expelling kids or suspending kids less will dramatically reduce suicide rates.

Therefore we should divert even more school resources into disruptive kids.

Right!

Sure being expelled is a red flag that the kid is likely to take the loser offramp on the highway of life, but that does not mean it causes the problems.

How about other “factors”:
* Eating KFC.
* Listening to rap music.
* Parents on drugs/benefit.
* Single mother households.

We need better data driven decision making. This PC crap just prevents people from addressing the real problems.

  Sad cmm as we witness another conditioning process of yet another worthless addition to the Education budget. First sign was gifting 600 special teacher helpers who in earlier times were simply teacher aides. Ironic really as it common knowledge that these at risk children were the very ones the Charter schools were providing not just a safety net but what we might term “education+”. Bringing back, hope, self-esteem and pride as they got to grips with a teaching process that was tailored for their greater needs.
  The conditioning process is standard MP for Labour as they use this approach to appease the unionized teachers whining about being over worked. The irony being this has the potential to far exceed the total cost of having Charter schools to provide for such disadvantaged children much more effectively and economically. Not to mention the massive gains of so many children who might otherwise slip through the system become a
  an asset to their communities and NZ as a whole.
  Funner still as Davis is claiming success in reducing prison numbers through the lack of literacy skills of criminals who got through the state system without gaining much at all. Likewise he too is doing some conditioning to push another burden on taxpayers with a special native program to fix such problems. However it raises the question. If these criminals failed with the first attempt to educate them should the cost of re-education be costed against Corrections or Education budgets? Not missing the “punch line”. His dream is no natives in prison. A Tui board classic surely?

1 – Phil Twyford has now made so many varying statements and announced some many schemes, demolitions v renewals, development links, and price ranges, can anyone still have any idea of what he or Kiwibuild are actually doing?

2 – And media seem to out of laziness, ignorance or even seeming collusion, never go back to an overall summary or check original information, to give a real indication of progress or the target being missed, or even the validity of the information in the first place.
Almost inevitably any news item will leave out vital information, to render it an absolute waste of time reading anything related to Twyford.
For either housing or transport – cars, rail and fuel taxes

So, with the latest, “The Government’s flagship KiwiBuild policy is on ‘life support’ National’s Judith Collins claims” –
In an answer to a written question last week, Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford said as of November 5, there had been 388 pre-qualified KiwiBuild applicants.

Ministry for Housing and Urban Development (HUD) figures show of the 3,375 contracts signed between KiwiBuild and a developer, the location of 2,858 – or 85% – of the homes has yet to be announced.

So far, 18 KiwiBuild homes have been completed, with 73 under construction, according to HUD’s figures. More than 45,000 people have registered an interest in buying a KiwiBuild home.

45,000 people have registered an interest in buying a KiwiBuild home.
Are the remaining 26,194 (71,194 minus 45,000) not young academics, but rather people in actual poverty who may be too illiterate to be on any list of applicants, or even follow that they could be?

  It’s for the middle-class, six-figure salary earners, graduate doctors, the marketing executives – and once Treasury did the numbers the scam was exposed.
  
  Only a third of people could ever possibly afford the $650,000 price tag for a three or four-bedroom home.
  
  Of course lots of people wanted a house, but you need well in excess of $100,000 of income to pay for it, and there are not many of those people out there.

When I got home from a mate’s 50th birthday last night, I realized something that is just so true………if *Bohemian Rhapsody* starts playing, and the person you’re with doesn’t start singing AND at least attempt the different voices, you really need to leave them alone.   Went to the Bohemian Rhapsody movie last week and thought it was great.
  Then read a review in which the writer complained that not enough was made of Freddy Mercury being bisexual/gay and developing AIDS.
  Not enough “realism” so film was compromised for the gay community. Whaaah.

    It was a good movie, it reinforced just how good they were and him obviously.
    His album Barcelona was excellent, sad he died as we have missed some incredibleness methinks…
    
    Pity about his lifestyle, Homo, America, tons of dosh and NO friends, but taking it up the arse with a different person each night was just a perfect storm for the times.
    
    Yeah the Movie was soft on him not like Prime’s “Freddie Mercury program”.
    But it made a better movie, we all know the above, it was about the story.
    Good on May and Deakin for husbanding the movie as they did.
    It’s worth the money.

    Freddy might have been gay, but he was a damn site more than a just gay man. Furthermore, he kept his private life extremely private, especially his relationships and his illness. He was camp, he was outrageous, and we all knew he was gay, but his homosexuality never defined him. Why should that change now just because a bunch of bleating homosexuals and their libtard friends want to hijack him as a mascot?       Yes, I always thought that was an interesting dichotomy for young kiwi blokes in the 70’s and 80’s given we were, well, at least in my group of friends, very much the kiwi blokes laughing at the homo brigade and accusing one another of being a homo for various acts of stupidity all the while not even noticing Freddy Mercury while we enjoyed the rock music for what it was. Then on the other end of the music scene were people like Bronski Beat and The Smiths (Morrissey more obviously) being openly gay and almost never played because of that and that only. At least things were a little more black and white back then. Men were men and sheep were worried 🙂

  Take him anywhere in the car and he brings along his CD of his fave songs.
  
  He’s slowly growing out of his ‘ABBA’ phase but more than 50 times, ha, you could have overtaken me and heard us both animatedly singing along to ‘I Have A Dream’, ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Waterloo’…
  
  Singing along to ‘BR” would be a must for everyone I know, secondcumming. And how could you not be singing on a day, like today, sun streaming down, Liverpool freshly winning, Man Yoo freshly losing, the All Blacks….

    Biscuit do you know my son? He is an ABBA & Queen fanatic and he is still 3 months away from his 10th birthday. Problem of hearing the Breeze on his mother’s car radio.
    
    He insisted we all had to go & see Mama Mia 2, and of course he saw that BR was coming to movies. With this he was insisting that we would all be going to that. Needless to say his mum and I had to think quick & explain that it it would not be a movie for him. When I was his age it would have been a R16 & that would have been the end of the matter, but thanks to modern technology that is another story.

      I don’t think so, hullkiwi. ‘Our’ wee fella is 9, too, and has a Christian name starting with a ‘D’ (if that helps you ‘eliminate’ him) and everyone here is very protective of him.
      
      He’s had a hell of a start to life – courtesy of a happily-now-locked-up ‘dad’ – and about the only nice thing I can say about him, the ‘dad’, is that the abuse he dealt out was physical rather than sexual.
      
      That said, it is truly alarming just how worldly-wise a modern 9-year-old can be in sexual knowledge. ‘D’ knows exactly what is involved in all possible permutations of the act, ha.
      
      I often jest that, once I get elected as Master of the Universe, I will be having a string of Daily Executions. To rid the planet of, oh, Red Greens voters, Man Yoo fans, Bono, Justin Bieber, Quade Cooper and various other folk who have annoyed me in some small way. But I will be authorising my executioners to come up with some painful, medieval-type life endings for those who have abused wee kids…

        It is sad to read of situations as experienced by your young friend. As a husband and father, I do not understand what drives some men that they can bring harm to children or women.

  Heard an item on Red Radio about it. Despite all the words about open & transparent, Jones is not interested in the truth. Not only that we got waffle about how many questions govt ministers get, well excuse me, they have a whole office of staff dedicated to serving the minister & ensuring they are briefed & can answer the most basic of questions- like who did you meet with?

    Actually hullkiwi it has been the earliest sign of incompetence in the COL by failing to answer both written and oral questions since day one. It is even enumerated in Hansards that after posing the same question 9 times Dr Nick Smith was still waiting for an answer. The volume of questions is multiplied every time they duck a question while in the House Mallards lets them make party political promotional/policy responses instead of instructing them to answer the question. Remember that many questions and even OIA’s have had a first response of being declined as the wording did not suit them. They bring it on themselves and it is no grounds for negligence but failure to answer the first time. At school we were encouraged to puzzle on the awful notions behind man’s inhumanity to man.

Never would I imagine this could happen as an ingrained principal in our judiciary.

Recently Jim Lovering of Seattle would declare on Sun Jul 29, 2018, a few weeks before the judgement

“They will uphold the conviction. They are trying to figure out how to word their ruling”,

A frightening prospect.

And his very early appraisal in 2015

“I flatly reject the prosecution’s claim that Lundy did this himself. It is impossible, from the facts we have to work with.”

from which he has never wavered and continues to assist the correction of the wrong.

This might be deemed anecdotal were it not for his stringent work in gaining the release from an Italian penitentiary of Amanda Knox. No one any longer believes she was anything but a victim of a rogue prosecutor, who would manage to salvage a flagging career by engineering a seven year persecution of this fine young woman from Seattle, ably assisted by judges Matteini Massei and Nencini one after the other.

Jim was applying the common principal that appeal courts cannot be relied on to show an interest in the truth, but rather in the upholding of a jury verdict to placate the plebescite. By forecasting this judgement penned by Mark Cooper j on behalf of himself, Raynor Asher and Helen Winkelmann, he has affirmed the bleak future of innocents caged.

Fortunately Mark Cooper has shown their work, and it is being shredded by an international team. I know this post will be voted out of sight, but a few readers will know I am not wrong.

Everyone should read the appeal court judgments in Arthur Thomas, Teina Pora and Mark Lundy. 6 times there have been inventions of acts that never happened by “learned” judges, in these 3 cases alone we have the judicial equivalent of 3 Erebus incidents. Aviation learned, the judiciary have not.

    Lack of dissent is a puzzle, but they have nailed their colours to the mast. The universities will get to study the law and science in the case now, and history will log the work of these three.

        I mean all those who had read the full case files, the police notebooks and how what got to court bore no resemblance to what was initially written, the false associations between dna and unidentifiable material, the idea that being in a far city used to be called an alibi and much more.
        The case is straightforward and has been made into a pig’s ear. It is making New Zealand an international laughing stock amongst the common sense practitioners.

        I have read all the material submitted by prosecution and defence before going to court.
        Philip Morgan has trotted out all the old glaring falsehoods and Jonathan Eaton has furnished complete documentation proving innocence.
        The hearing is deemed to have gone very well for the defence, indeed the questioning was targeting Morgan’s bullshit astutely.
        I can’t account for a finding that is diametrically opposed to all the tabled ewvidence and evidence in court except by restating Jim Lovering, who is an old hand at watching these diabollical cases unfold

        Well they figured how to word it, they drew a false association between dna totally separate from a couple of stains and the stains themselves. It overcomes the forensic purity of the man and his car and his glasses and hair roots.
        Bullshit KS and if you don’t know it now I guess you will soon.

  Knox was guilty along with the boyfriend and the acquaintance/friend who turned evidence. The trouble was they were all too smashed to know who did what & the prosecution couldn’t prove who applied the fatal stab wounds.

      Not Afghanistan, try Libya. The Knox/Kercher case was unsafe, as there was no evidence to prove who committed the murder. Knox’s alibi never stacked up – even if you read Wikipeadia it doesn’t add up. Like AATCrewe the police/prosecution identified the parties, but got the facts wrong.

  With realistic possible motives like money.
  
  Someone mocked the serial killer scenarios. IE Harvey Wilson. If it was a random burglar that doesn’t eliminate the possibility they later suicided due to guilt for what happened. Never becoming a serial killer.
  
  When the key evidence, the brain matter, is not 100% reliable due to the testing issues, plus a tiny chance its transpher evidence, or the conspiracy theory it was planted. You need other evidence proving how it got their etc. Or other evidence he was their at the time.
  The evidence doesn’t prove he is not guilty but the evidence of guilt is very borderline as trustworthy.
  
  The not identified DNA of two males puts a shadow over this case that needs to be resolved.

The paint evidence is false, the bangle in the car belonged to Amber’s girlfriend, Robertson got the petrol spot on, ther was 30 liters not enough to do three trips, Temple Camp and Rod Miller are frauds, James Pang lied twice about time of death while being stood over by DC Grantham both times. It is an utter disgrace the whole thing, and these 3 judges should not get away with this nonsense but they will waltz onto the supreme court no doubt.

      Right Paulus sure the Czech Republic have nor lodged an extradition request but they were convinced expressing an interest in having him deported seemed sufficient prior to ILG/s actions on the hoof. Deportation is the only sure solution and while it might be a serious embarrassment for ILG and the COL it might be the only way to shut the whole thing down. Short term pain for a long term gain letting them move on from greater problems if and when higher level interference might be exposed. The gamble is guessing how much the opposition knows as well as wondering what he shouldn’t know about but is giving them the softer option of prompt closure.

      Rolex owners invariably never remove the watch from their person. Pack it in baggage? NEVER!
      
      The $5000 (would depend on whether it was/is gold or stainless steel) quoted by the UK person probably also includes an exchange differential, and the cost of the inscription on the back of the casing. But that inscription, if one is there. would simply prove that the claimed loss is a fraud. Rolex does NOT, ever, inscribe its watches.
      
      The insurance company will be sure to ask and then interview the named retailer (a Rolex requirement since every sale is recorded) or supplier.

      Further thought – a server change went haywire. My guess is – if the raw IP address was changed then it takes a while for the new IP address to wash through the various name servers on the internet. Hence the site at the old IP address continued to be visible as long as the name server used for the lookup continued to point to the old site.

Seems the bully boy Hipkins knows fugh all about teachers and their conditions,and their requests for some more favourable working conditions.
To make things more questionable on another matter. The report on the another alleged bully called Wally Haumaha the next deputy Police Commissioner has been in the hands of Peters Coalition of Corruption and Chaos for almost twelve days now. The release of the report is said to be out today.
Normally the PM should be addressing the report. Not this time. Bully boy Hipkins will be doing it this afternoon . Seems slippy tit Ardern has slunk off to Asia ,making sure she will be out of the country ,when Hipkins the wee bully who put the boot into the teachers this morning ,will be reporting on another alleged Police bully.

Thing that stuck out to me about this article was the admission from the writer that her daughter learnt to read after her first year at school.

Lazy mother and father,all my children could read well before they even saw the inside of a classroom.

Teachers are well paid,try earning the same in other industries and you will be working longer with far less holiday pay.

I have reviewed the stats on employment released last week. I can not see any reason that the unemployment rate should drop. There are swings and roundabouts within some sectors which highlight statistical inconsistencies more than job creation, but those do not point to a big drop in unemployment. There are regional inconsistencies that again point to problems in gathering the data rather than job creation. And to top it off there are seasonal adjustments that mask everything, making it difficult to find the real cause.

My conclusions are that we are likely to see a big correction in the unemployment numbers next time back to, or slightly higher, than those from the previous qtr (June 18).

I see that Brian Priestley, a media guru of decades past, died in Christchurch on Saturday aged 92.

Brian was a driver in the change to having reporters trained in tertiary institutions rather than by apprenticeships, and was quite prominent as a commentator on the talk shows on State television and radio, as well as in the print media.

I think I remember him saying that as a youngster in World War 2 he trained as a paratrooper, but his unit remained on standby for air drop into the Arnhem disaster. He would have been only about 18 years old then.

    That needs to be topped up with a whole lot more credits to make it into a degree.
    
    I suppose you could, in theory, take a few papers in chemistry or statistics so they’d be able to make sense of the world around them.

  Last year happened to be waiting at the bus stop opposite a Sallies store on a Sunday. Guy on a bike with a big box tied on the back worked his way through the bags and boxes. Just tipped stuff out, took what he wanted, left a right mess. Then a station wagon pulled up, 3 PIs hopped out and also went through stuff. Also left a mess behind. And were efficient, fast, no conversation happening, looked like they knew exactly what they were doing.
  
  The stuff was in the parking bay, not on the street.
  
  I called the cops, didn’t see what happened though as the bus turned up.

If you use the figures for using a charging station, and add in RUC that an EV should be paying, it costs more to run a BMW i3 than a BMW i2 18i.

  You presented a false argument. Cost to run is not the same as cost to be on the road.
  
  The physics is pretty simple. Petrol motors can never exceed 40% efficiency and most ‘high performers’ are in the 20% range. EV has very little loss at any stage. Batteries at 99% plus and motors in the 90% to 95% range.
  Petrol burnt at a multi stage generator plant can drive an EV 3 time further than if used in a petrol car. As figures in the range of 60% to 80% can be reached.
  There you go. 3 times more efficient.
  
  As pointed out at some point, to pay for roads, a per Km tax has to be applied.
  
  But it remains up to 3 times more energy efficient and therefore cost efficient to drive an EV. Tax doesn’t effect physics.

    That’s not correct. Newer batteries loose 20% of their max charge then stabilise for the life of the car.
    They are not lead acids that die.
    Yet to see the lifespan on Ali ion yet but should inherently be cheaper than Lithuim. Can’t catch fire and near instant full charging.
    
    In 10 years batteries will be cheaper than now as mass manufacturing drops prices towards commodity prices.
    
    Your argument doesn’t include engine oils, oil filters, air filters, cam belts, etc etc. They also don’t survive the life of the car. So some offsetting vs maintenance on EV.

      Nope. They don’t stabilise at all. Quite the opposite. The older lithium-based batteries get, the more susceptible they are to charge-cycle deterioration based on discharge and recharge rates. Did you know, for example, that heavy acceleration in hot weather no only reduces the range of the current charge, but it also reduces that total number of charge cycles remaining the battery?
      
      My ‘argument’ was that the article didn’t take into account depreciation of a substantial and volatile capital component.

      Battery swapping is by far the best technical and economic solution, eliminates range issues, increases efficiency, lowers costs and reduces need for extensive charging infrastructure. But it doesn’t necessarily suit the manufacturers who want to sell more expensive cars.

  Now I’m a Catholic – will be til’ the end. I for one am very happy that the scope now includes Churches et al. It may have slipped by a lot of people, but there is a massive “civil war” going on the RCC right now. The problem is child and seminarian abuse, ~80% of which has been homosexual in nature as calculated in other jurisdictions. Many homosexualist Bishops and Cardinals, as well as their straight, limp wristed careerist friends either perpetrated these crimes, or covered them up. These same corrupt clerics are the ones demanding the Church get “with the times” and be “down with the kids”. If you want to see how unfettered coalition with the progressive homosexualist crowd works out, just look at the RCC.
  
  The same is true here – I know of at least one teen abuse case and one priest attack for a fact. The teen case guy went to jail. Despite many attempts to set things right, that priest case got dropped, and the victim left the diocese rather worse for wear. So, time to get rid of the corruption.
  
  I for one hope the Commission here does what their USA Federal counterparts have done, and immediately issue notes to ALL the Catholic dioceses demanding no shredding, altering or hiding of documents and that they expect PDFs of ALL the hidden Chancery files (that’s right there are hidden Chancery files on all diocesan staff, clergy and lay) to be delivered soon.
  
  I can think of at least 3 rather nervous prelates right now, north of the Hundalees.

Statistics New Zealand figures show 5500 or 6.2 per cent of Northland’s working age population were unemployed in the September quarter which was higher than the national rate of 3.9 per cent.

Of the unemployed, 3000 were Maori and 2500 non-Maori, while 3600 were male and 1900 female.

  There’s bugger all in the way of “anchor” industries in Northland. Before someone can afford to engage a painter they need to be employed themselves. Off the top of my head the Far North has the JNL mill at Kaitaia, a freezing works at Moerewa, there’s a Fonterra dairy factory at Kauri & Marsden Point provides work. Obviously a few infrastructure jobs, logging truck drivers & some work associated with tourism.
  
  That’s simply not sufficient for a region with a young & growing population.

      Won’t make any difference to the marginalised masses within Maoridom Captain. The Iwi is incredibly fractionated & the Treaty cake is going to be sliced amongst hapu on a micromanaged, no love lost level. Expect assets to be fought over in Court for the next 50 years.
      
      Then, as we’ve all witnessed, the “trickle down theory” is a load of shit everywhere & Maori society is no exception. BMWs for the Kaumatua are more important by orders of magnitude than housing those currently living fifteen to a rotten, falling down hovel on tribal land.

How PC-ism is twisting the language.

Stuff reports:

An Australian woman charged with placing needles in strawberries, triggering a nationwide food tampering crisis, has been refused bail.

My Ut Trinh, 50, of Caboolture, north of Brisbane, Queensland, appeared calm in the dock after spending the night in custody.

Names of most Australians appearing in an Australian court wouldn’t be qualified in a media report with the adjective “Australian”. You take it they are Australian.

So the PC use a code. Using the adjective “Australian” implies the person is of different ethnicity to the Anglo-Irish majority of the Australian population.

It’s not really needed. Even without the accompanying photograph, it’s clear from the name the accused person is South-east Asian ethnicity, probably Vietnamese.

A Vietmamese Australian might be the description in a saner time, or an “ethnic Vietnamese Australian”.

So the word “Australian” hints this person is not really fully “Australian”.

Orwell we need you here again.

Have to say I’m with the teachers on the strike action, although i have never been on strike myself. In 1968 i was paid $2492 a year as a first year teacher. In 1972 teachers received a massive salary increase, for me it was to $5208 a year as a fourth year teacher. It enabled us to have kids ,think about a house. More to the point teachers of science and math flooded to the job as it was attractive. That is the last time teachers received a decent upgrade inconsideration from government. I also felt valued and didn’t mind how many hours i put into the job, along within rugby and cricket on saturdays and supervising and endless number of enthusiastic trainees on section for six week S, enthusiastic for they too could see a future for themselves.
Faced with a three million slush fund and free fees for middle class students and being told there’s no more money is patent BS. Hipkins is a boy in a mans world and Jacinda is ….well, you know what? She is a millennial!

An interesting article on NZ’s banks by Brian Gaynor is still available on the Hooerald web site (link below).

It includes the fact that the former savings bank, ASB, was sold to Australians for a fraction of its present asset value.

The selling of NZ’s savings banks deserves a closer look. In their place were set up community trusts, most of which look to have become troughs for directors appointed by politicians.

They concentrate on doling out returns from investments. It will be interesting to see how the trusts weather inevitable economic downturns.

One of the criticisms of savings banks was that the State guarantee of savers’ accounts was regarded as unfair and anti-capitalistic. It’s interesting that there is early talk of a need for all bank investment accounts to be guaranteed.

Savings banks were unprofitable compared with big commercial banks because of scale, and because they tended to keep more branches in regional areas. They did provide jobs in the regions, including technology and management jobs.
