      While I agree with your sentiment, I have to point out that the correct spelling is ‘loathe’ and it’s not an adjective. It’s a noun.

        igm is, in general fact, correct in saying that ‘loath’ is an adjective, as in this construction, I am loath to buy shares at this time, but Paulus was obviously using a verb and the adjectival meaning is inappropriate in the specific context. /pedant

My sympathy lies with this poor bugger. We had one particular road paddock with a nicely trimmed macrocarpa hedge and a decent size ditch in front. Not only did we get all types of takeaway rubbish dumped there, along with filthy napkins, but some dirty mongrels also climbed the 7-wire fence and shit behind the hedge. Got pissed off so ran a fine wire off a high powered electric unit just below the top wire. We were sitting outside one afternoon when our huntaway took off into the paddock . . . some dirty bastard had climbed the fence, and could not get out for fear of further shocks. Obviously a towny, he shit himself when he saw our dog (just a friendly old working boy) taking more shocks, screaming obscenities at me whilst clearing out as I approached on my quad. Took his registration number and intend to follow up further.

  Our local swimming hole in Featherston has similar issues.
  
  It’s at the end of a public road so access rights aren’t the issue, but the location has been added to one of the main freedom camping websites as it is HEAVING with gypsies all summer long and there is frequently rubbish everywhere.
  
  There’s a modern long drop, but why wait your turn for that when you can just shit on the grass, right? And you drove to town for beers, but why would you drive the empties back to town when you could just throw them in the trees, right?

It seems The Project is getting more viewers while Seven Sharp is losing them. Ditto The AM Show v. Breakfast.

I’d say viewers aren’t leaving TVNZ’s offerings for TV3’s; rather they are switching off altogether as Breakfast and Seven Sharp are unbelievably shit. You don’t learn anything and to make it worse they are trying to be funny.

    What is the justification for Government still having any involvement in commercial broadcasting? How can New Zealanders ever free themselves of the suspicion / belief that state-owned-and-controlled broadcasting services are or can be politically-biased, or at least significantly influenced?

  Both channels are shit right across the board – content, ad frequency, presenters, news standard and political bias. Sky, for all its faults provides excellent news services, good doco channels, sport, movies and entertainment. The advent of Netflix, Prime Video et al just sweetens the pill. The only chink in the armour is domestic news but I think that we tend to accumulate local news as it happens these days either online or via our phones and the need for a daily ‘6pm news’ has long gone particularly when laced with an unhealthy political bias.

        Onyer Stamper. The computer-illiteracy underbelly these days sits fair and square in the 80s+ age bracket and with those that just can’t be bothered. All of my peers in their 70s are totally savvy and comfortable with IT’s role in their daily lives. Gaming would be the exception where there is just zero interest. They have the dosh too to acquire the latest gear when they need it and the time to apply it.
        
        My mother started using the Hollerith punch card system in the 1940s in the UK. Hollerith I believe merged with IBM in the early days.

  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – we must be the only country in the world who doesn’t have breakfast and midday news over the new year period owing to the fact that all the reporters are on holiday. I just can’t believe this. I am sure there’d be up-and-coming reporters who would kill to read the midday news.   I was a member of the NZDF delegation that brought the Unknown Warrior back to NZ in the early 2000s. David Dobbyn was brought along at Helen Clark’s behest, to sing that God-awful song a couple of times. He even screeched it into the RNZAF 757’s PA system while we were preparing for landing.
  
  He earned the absolute contempt and loathing of every NZDF per on the deployment. I hated him then, and still do.

      I recall that Dobbyn’s universal unpopularity was such that it came to the attention of some of a friend of mine who had taken part in the ceremonies to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Monte Cassino in 1994. Dave Armstrong, the leftie who now writes a weekly rant for the DimPost, was on that trip.       Dobyn was born & raised Catholic, and went to Sacred Heart College in Glen Innes, Auckland. As with most young people, their faith does not mean much to them and they drop it – but later often return to it when they mature. Similar to the Finn Bros. who also attended SHC.

  Few would object to NZ hosting a small number (calculated say on a per capita host country population basis) providing 1) they are genuine refugees and 2) they undertake to respect NZ’s Judeo-Christian heritage, our liberal, democratic political system, and the rule of law (before all these things disappear.)

    We have a number of Iraqi Christian families in our area who moved here during the days of Saddam. They are really good people who have fitted in well and their kids and in some cases grandkids have grown up as Kiwis. Those that I have spoken with are more than happy to sponsor more Iraqi Christians and act as guarantors but it cuts no ice with ‘the powers that be’.

      We went to my wife’s former church on Christmas Eve, and during the service the pastor interviewed a refugee who the church had sponsored; one of three such families. They were Christians, living not so far from Mosul, an ISIS stronghold. They were given an ultimatum to convert to Islam or be killed, so they fled to a refugee camp in Lebanon from which they were eventually placed in New Zealand.
      
      The wife is a doctor, her husband is a builder, and they have three teenage boys. Their focus since arriving in New Zealand midway through 2018 has been to learn English, then to find jobs. They will in time become a great asset for New Zealand.
      
      One of the other families sponsored by the church is not a Christian family, but the members of the church have accepted them unconditionally nonetheless.

Stuff has published an opinion piece written by Rob Campbell (who is a company director): I was a late convert to being a climate change leader for business, and I’m not alone. Rob’s entitled to his opinion, but the purpose of my comment is to highlight the Stuff note at the end:

Stuff accepts the overwhelming scientific consensus that climate change is real and caused by human activity. We welcome robust debate about the appropriate response to climate change, but do not intend to provide a venue for denialism or hoax advocacy. That applies equally to the stories we will publish in Quick! Save the Planet and to our moderation standards for reader comments.

At one level, I don’t have an issue with this. It’s Stuff’s forum, and Stuff’s house rules. But at another level, I wonder if this is an appropriate stance for a media organisation to take. The words “denialism” and “hoax advocacy” have a calculated sting.

I’ve never bothered to comment on any Stuff article. For those who have, I was wondering if: (1) all comments go into moderation and are published if deemed acceptable; or (2) whether all comments are published immediately, but may subsequently be removed by a moderator. I assume it’s (1). Can anyone enlighten me?

      Here is one example of an error that was repeated several times (it was the poster boy comment used by Obama and several others).
      The gist of the statement was that there were several instances of the “highest yearly temperature ever” in the last 10 years and that this proves the world is warming.
      This is an example of a technique used in the Prince 2 exam where you get a statement of fact with supporting reason, and you have to assess whether the statement is true or false, and if the contention supports the statement (giving 4 possible answers, best being true,true).
      Applying that to the example, the best that it could achieve is a true+false. The reason for this is that, even if the statement about record highs is true, it does not prove that the temperatures are currently rising.
      The IPCC’s own figures show the “hiatus” in warming for 17 years. When water boils, the temperature rises up to the point that 100 degrees (at 1 atmosphere pressure) is reached. After that all readings will be in the highest ever category, even though there is no further warming.
      The argument that the 17 years is too short a period to be significant and that it needs to be regarded in context of the previous warming is also false, because the anthropogenic portion is supposedly post industrial revolution, meaning that 17 years is highly significant.
      For the sratement to be true, the rise in the yearly temperatures would have had to be statistically significant, which it is not.
      Another point to consider, if you will, is that the highest ever figures are within 1degree (possibly within 1/2 degree even) when compared to highs in the first half of last centuary, which is within measurement error levels (If not now, then certainly then).

    Yes, the idea of the world getting warmer is a scientific question. Whether we should do anything about it – that is a moral, and also a political and (if you like) religious question. What we should do about it is a different question again, bringing science and also economics back into the debate.
    
    The latter two areas are where we should be debating and engaging, not the initial question. So much ground has been lost, and so much damage has been done, by the socio-greens while the Right left the latter fields wide open and made themselves look like conspiracy theory nutjobs by trying instead to argue that it wasn’t happening at all.

    Can’t blame Paine for the massive workload his bowlers have had to carry. The Indian top order have been impressive on tour and done to Australia what Australia have done to many touring sides; ground them down. The Aussie selectors should have been bolder and rested some of their quicks for this test. They looked wrecked after the first day in Sydney.       They can only play what’s put in front of them, which included Pakistan in the UAE, where they’re almost unbeatable, England, Sri Lanka and someone else.
      Aussie had a poor record last year & India only 50/50. South Africa are clear numero uno, but their win/loss was not as good as NZ.
      Talking about tests.
      Apart from Williamson & Boult I don’t think our players are flash champions, but they are persistent bastards.

        NZ has played consistently as a team since the appointment of McCullum as captain whilst building a new depth of players. A great team culture too with a big degree of respect for their opposition.         Quite so MCos. We have depth in our playing stocks such I as can seldom remember. We now have five spin bowlers with test cricket experience in the last eighteen months. Our fast bowling stocks are terrific, and if James Neesham can get his act together he will become the test all-rounder, batting at #6 and bowling as either third or fourth seamer, depending on whether we play one or two spinners.
        
        Our batting has been impressive too. We just need Jeet Raval to get past the mental hurdle of his first test century, and things will look pretty solid. He’ll get that chance against Bangladesh in March.

    Biscuit – I’ve also enjoyed seeing Aussie get hammered but you’ll never hear a captain berate a player over the stump mic. Paine, like Williamson is a positive leader. As I mention above, the Aussie bowlers have been ground down by batsmen in good form, who can bat for sessions and who score in the zones that Aussie wickets always encourage.

    From what I understand they are pretty much all on the bones of their bums. But they struggle by with the help of grants from pub pokie trusts and the like (maybe Lotto too for all I know). They qualify as ‘charities’ and this sort of donation is presumably seen as supporting a social good! Go figure – gambling profits to support a gambling industry… Without these handouts, which I fail to see are of any community benefit at all, most of these clubs would have gone the way of the dodo years ago.

  The John Messara report requisitioned by Winston has some very important points. It follows on from Reports and Royal Commissions into racing like the 1924 effort, 1946 and 1970 one. All of the suggestions made in earlier reports were ignored. The Messara report must be followed. Too many administrators in racing have been tremendously enthusiastic unpaid volunteers who have done admirable work for their Clubs, but they cannot see the wood for the trees. Change must come about. The racing industry is in an awful state, and so few of the clubs’ administrators can recognise that.
  To put south Taranaki racing at Waverley seems silly, but think very carefully about all that. It is actually very sensible. The criticism is coming from people as bright as “IGM”. There is no way that the sale proceeds, nett of re-location costs for professional trainers, would go to the government; it will go to the NZ Racing Board.
  I accept that there is something unusual about NZ racing. When the very very best of the country’s gallopers turn up at Ellerslie the crowd is just so so. When slow horses turn up at Taupo there is a huge crowd. Those horses at Taupo; their time would be better spent featuring in a French dish called hamburger cheval.

Apparently, Stuff parliamentary gallery journalists believe, as a 2019 prediction that “National will trigger the waka jumping bill to remove Jami-Lee Ross from Parliament after he becomes a thorn in their side following his return to Parliament”.

But Speaker Mallard has already dealt with the Parliamentary Membership of Jami-Lee Ross under Standing Orders, declaring Ross an Independent, as recorded in Hansard :

Mrs Humble caught up with an old work friend. Her husband has been sacked so they are on the bene. WINZ helping them to keep pay the mortgage and they are off on a weeks holiday to Oz. My wife asked if she would like to help her with a bit of work in her business. She said no thanks – she has no interest in getting back to work at all.
What a great example theyre setting for their young kids

High Court bailiffs in England collecting debts with an hour’s notice to pay at least 50%, or removal of goods to the value of the debt. And, also they are employed to evict tenants within an hour. Out on the street and down the Council for emergency housing. Fascinating the financial mess people get themselves into. The statistics are horrendous, and the system is broken with the numbers skyrocketing. I posted about some over the top comments and a ban at Kiwiblog on Thursday. There was no General debate at Kiwiblog that day, so I posted a comment and link on it yesterday. There was some reaction to it for a while, but then it disappeared into moderation – not just the comment but the whole thread.

What is of interest though is that a small number of people (depending on how the moderation trigger is set) can effectively censor a comment and thread if they want to. DPF may eventually release reported comments from moderation, but by then the audience has moved on.

Maybe he should join a friendship circle with Morrissey and Notsofast.

Our teacher neighbour finished school 19 December and effectively starts again 15 January to do her 2019 prep work followed by a full week of professional development courses, management and syndicate meetings. There are no doubt some slack-arse schools, principals and teachers but don’t judge the many by the few.

Nostradamus suggested yesterday that there was a meat pie involved on Lundy’s shirt and asked for the evidence.
Here it is from the recent judgement

[341] However, Mr Eaton has referred to evidence called by the Crown from
Ms Elizabeth Wictum, a scientist attached to the Forensic Unit of the School of
Veterinary Medicine at UCLA, Davis. He claimed her evidence supported a possible
narrative that the CNS tissue found on Mr Lundy’s shirt was from the food chain.
Ms Wictum had conducted tests on elutions prepared by ESR from the pocket and
sleeve on Mr Lundy’s shirt and forwarded to her in California. She referred to the tests
as the “meat ID”, the “quantitative PCR” and the “amplified mitochondrial DNA”
tests. The elutions were subjected to each test.
[342] The first test was “weakly positive” for both pork and beef in both samples,
and in one case weakly positive for sheep. The results were very low, indicating there
was very little mitochondrial DNA in both samples. It was “very weak” and “barely
detectable”. The quantity of DNA present was “very low”. The quantitative PCR test
was used to test the presence of “cattle nuclear DNA”. It gave negative results. The
third test was inconclusive. In relation to the results achieved in the first test,
Ms Wictum later explained:
… because it’s very low-level obviously it’s not meat itself … So this is more
consistent with, for example, food spatter, if you were frying say a sausage or
something … that had those species in it, it’s again very low-level background
type of mitochondrial DNA. “

He took away her face in 17 blows, in order to expunge her from the memory of his and the human race. Tindalls Bay is an absolute millpond this morning as I get ready to pull out within the next hour or so.

Yesterday afternoon the missus and me went around the neighbors and said our goodbyes. The thing I really love about being here, (beside the obvious), is the people. It’s a place where we all think alike, act alike, and to some extent even look alike. There’s always an air of positivity and good humor among everyone.

Thinking back on it, in the entire 10 days we’ve been here, there was just one ‘slightly awkward moment’. I was having a beer and a few laughs with some mates at the Surf Club when this Midget came over and asked if he could have a go with my Yo-yo.

Today I read a review of Jordan Peterson’s book ‘12 Rules of Life’, which was was basically the reviewers informed opinion on the book and the author in general.
I don’t know enough about the subject he pontificates on to form an opinion myself either way. I think it would take years to study every angle rather than take what he or his critics say as gospel.
However there is something that seems to be one of the basis of his beliefs.
Men are order & women are chaos.
My question.
Is this universal or does he allow for chaotic men & orderly women?
Is he flexible in his philosophy or, being a man, must every conform to view of the world.

  Professor Peterson is not saying women are chaos per se. If you read the book it is the equivalent of ying and yang, a philosophy of balance. He states it is important for less chaos in your life to have a secure footing. Too much chaos in your life is unbalancing to a safe and happy existence.
  
  I suggest you go directly to the “horses mouth” and read Professor Jordan Peterson’s book, written after nearly 40 years experience, rather than reading reviews from the point of view of reviewers.

The problem with Jacinda isn’t that she’s nice or not nice. Her problem is she is just not up to the rigours of the job she was so keen to get, despite her protestations. Remember, no-one takes over the leadership of a political party unless they are driven by ambition.
So we have an ambitious woman, approaching middle age, who has achieved virtually nothing of note in her life. She failed to win a seat in two elections, until she was gifted a safe seat, one suspects all part of the long-term plan.
She sat in parliament for 9 years and did nothing, attracting no attention to herself except for complimentary puff pieces.
She has been almost invisible as a PM except for the big moments like posing with royalty or emoting on TV.
She has a glib plausibility but no policy or action to back it.
I was dismayed when Winston chose her over the experienced and sound Bill English but understand why as he can run rings round her, as can second-raters like Grant Robertson who have risen to status undreamed of and undeserved.
The problem with John Key is that he worked like a Trojan and made it look easy.
The problem with Jacinda is that she is all surface and no depth. She has never needed to exert herself and is still asleep on the job.

  There’s two types of PM’s.
  
  The John Key/Helen Clark type where they’re all over everything, run a tight ship and lead from the front.
  
  Or the Jacinda Ardern type which is a figurehead role where all the work is done behind the scenes by others and she merely presents it.
  This is why she accepted the position of leader, this sort of role is perfect for her, she would also mentally struggle with anything more than that.
  
  Thing is through both are equally effective but Ardern does rely on a compliant and supportive MSM.

  Good comment, BeaB. But you’re much kinder to Ardern than I believe she justifies. In my view she has two characteristics which ultimately explain her inadequacies for the role of Prime Minister.
  
  Mentally Ardern lacks the required levels of inherent intelligence and formal education (Politics and Communications at Waikato, anyone?) necessary to lead a modern western Government and to manage its economic pressures and priorities.
  
  Ardern is 38 years of age, and it’s now too late (in practical terms) for her to overcome those personal shortcomings. She can survive in her current role, but she will prove to be little more than a figurehead leader of a disjointed coalition Government.

Just read Jacinda Ardern’s speech made in Berlin last year. Interesting to review that in light of what has happened since (Migration Compact). I note her comment about “Open Borders”.

      It seems that it is binding, “when the switch is turned on” and NZ has not made any caveats, or special arrangements to maintain sovereignty, when the it becomes binding.
