Brett Hudson (National List MP for Ohariu) has posted an item on Facebook about a light rail system developed in China, but without the rails! It is a passenger road train using technology to steer the train so it stays on the designated right of way. While works would be required to create and build the right of way this would be at a fraction of the cost of laying rails etc. It could probably even run ‘off piste’ if need be. This sort of development makes traditional light rail dead.
Anyone wanting to persevere with the Auckland or Wellington light rail schemes in the light of the Sydney light rail scheme debacle must be crazy. Take the estimated cost and then triple it, then allow for a third of the businesses along the route to be wrecked or nearly wrecked. It is not worth it when there are better alternatives.

  Much of the problem is with the so called expert engineers, who really get things so wrong.
  
  They just can’t estimate with any degree of reliability.
  
  My general rule of thumb, is that if an expert puts a cost on a large public infrastructure development, then increase the cost by 3-5 times, and see whether the economics hold up.
  
  Experts suck. Especially engineers!

    Do not blame the engineers and estimators. For such projects they come under enormous pressure to get their estimates skinned to the bone so the project passes muster and gets approved. This is why Fletcher Building ran into trouble – their estimators were put under extreme pressure so their bids were competitive.
    Same with Maniatoto Irrigation Scheme in 1980’s. Some poor engineer would have been put under pressure from on high to screw estimates right down and just accept cost over-runs. When things hit the fan and Warren Cooper (MP for the area at the time) called for ‘heads to roll’, Ministry of Works and Development threw him and a few others under a bus to save their bacon. IMO the Chuief Executive’s head should have rolled – he condoned the under-estimating.

  I’m picking Crusaders to beat Lions in Super Rugby final. NZ will squeak past England but lose to Ireland in Northern tour. JL Ross will go rogue and media will lap it up. Cullen will return as de facto Finance minister. NZ will be second in ICC test rankings in one years time. Scandal will encompass Aussie cricketers soon. New Phoenix coach will inspire the team.

Just a note to those that think Winston will stop the CGT or water it down,he is looking for utu over who leaked his Pension over payments and has targeted several National MP’s past and present without success for over a year now, so he won’t stop until he achieves that. Now I believe that he will use spite on National voters and support a Labour CGT if the polls continue to slide downwards as it will be his last chance to get some sort of revenge.

  Peters himself was responsible for the leak.
  
  He was getting very little traction before the last election, so he engineered a story.
  
  He is so hostile to National because it is led by Simon Bridges, who humiliated Peters in the Tauranga electorate in 2008.
  
  Peters is a bitter old man who is (thankfully) coming to the end of a long career in which he has contributed almost nothing of value.
