The most disturbing aspect of the huge crowd that marched on Washington last week was the reaction of the left and the big tech companies that are using it to now silence conservative voices. Sen Josh Hawley has a book out about the tyranny of big tech. Because of his support for the protesters Simon & Schuster have decided not to publish his book. Interestingly enough at the same time Twitter has stopped the account of the President of the United States. So has Facebook. So has Instagram.

Don’t worry you say, they can go on other platforms. Well one of those other platforms is Parler, but big tech has destroyed that too! They have been deplatformed by Apple and others.

Don’t worry you say, they are a private business, they can decide who they will provide services to. Well, what if the New Zealand Herald decided that they were no longer going to cover Judith Collins and any of her press statements? What if Spark said, “we are no longer going to provide telecommunication services to Act supporters because David Seymour does not support the government’s stance on Covid and he is putting all New Zealanders at risk”??

Interestingly enough in North Korea you have only one choice of provider. You have a radio in every household that is permanently on and cannot be turned off. That radio will broadcast a wake-up call when the government determines you should wake-up and then a constant stream of government propaganda.
In America you have a parallel development of a few small elitist businessmen in charge of tech companies who will decide what you can see and what you can hear. So for example if you wanted to hear about Hunter Biden’s laptop, you were going to have difficulty because that story was squelched by all of the big tech companies and all of the mainstream media who simply refused to cover it.
Right now today if you tweet anything about “stop the steal”, referring to the 2020 presidential election, your tweet will be deleted.

Google is no better. They are a provider of a search engine that is meant to learn your preferences and provide access to information based on those preferences. I find whenever I Google anything about American politics all I get on my search results are stories from the Washington post, the New York Times, CNN and the Guardian of all places!. I never ever click on any of those sites as sources of news. Fortunately thanks to my bookmarks I can review my favourite sites for information. But Google will not take me there. Why is that? Because Google wants to minimise conservative voices and to amplify the views of the globalist elite.

North Korea has no choice about its government. But free citizens in the West do have a choice. It would be a shame if we use that choice to move more and more towards a Socialist state where there is no free speech and only views approved by our globalist big tech overlords will be allowed.

  Being a private organisation means the first amendment doesn’t apply. But they are discriminating based on political opinion in the provision of goods and services. That’s illegal in NZ and some states of the U.S. but not prohibited by federal law. They are not legally in the clear.

    We must understand that Big Tech, while listed on the stock exchange, operate as proxies for a government department. The State cannot breach the 1st Amendment, but an ostensibly private company can. Make no mistake, it is effectively the established State apparatus that has banned Trump and is silencing and purging right wing opinion from social media.

  Don’t like a newspaper of web site because it won’t publish nutty stuff you want to read? Well, don’t buy that newspaper or use that website.
  These companies a free to make commercial decisions, and can succeed or fail based on those decisions. None of them have a monopoly on publishing ideas, and there is no monopoly of tech platforms that the lesser-hinged have access to.
  
  It would be much different if a government (like Trump’s buddy Kim) was suppressing speech, but there is nothing preventing Scott from accessing the batty ideas he is receptive to, like young-earth creationism.

    It’s nowhere near that simple. Apple and Google do effectively control access to content. If Chorus decided to disable the phone and internet of all Green party supporters I doubt you would still be talking about the freedom of companies to make commercial decisions.

    Unfortunately, Merkel and Macron don’t agree with you. Maybe the Allies saved Europe from expansionist authoritarianism in the past, but it seems to be Europe who are taking the strongest stand for the fundamental principles of democracy on behalf of the world now.

The EU is currently in the process of setting up regulation that could give the bloc power to split up platforms if they don’t comply with rules.”
    Even the NZ Privacy Commissioner has said that the twitter bans are “arbitrary and cynical.”
    
    They have removed the ability for public communications from a sitting elected president as they try to impeach him and permanently remove his voice and that of his supporters. Nice work democrats way to bring the country together.

  Five people are dead, many more injured. The big-tech companies are taking responsible steps to try and prevent speech that would encourage a repeat of this event.

    Just think for a moment about the logic of what you’re suggesting here:
    
    A expresses an opinion. B agrees with A and commits a violent criminal act based in part on their agreement with what A said. Therefore opinions such as the one expressed by A should be blocked.
    
    For just about any controversial issue, some nutcase somewhere has engaged in violence. Abortion doctors and anti-abortion protestors have both been shot and killed. Unionists have killed and been killed. Nobody could say anything ever again.

    The deaths are a tragedy but you are trying to make the issue bigger than it was.

Have people sufficiently noticed the change in initial Waikeria reports that mentioned “rubber bullets”, to the usage now of “sponge rounds”?

A second whānau member was in contact with her relative last Friday evening and was concerned when she heard ‘two big bangs’ in the background of the conversation.
She said her relative told her the men were being shot at before hanging up the phone.
“He just said, ‘I’ve got to go, I’ve got to go, they’re shooting at us’. I just said be safe, be careful.
“He let me know that he had been hit by rubber bullets, he couldn’t breathe properly and he sounded really scared, he said he was sore,” said the whānau member.
In the statement, police said the rounds were for use in high-risk situations where people are likely to harm themselves or others.
Sponge rounds are cylinder pellets with a plastic casing and a blunt, dense rubber tip, that are designed not to enter the skin. – RNZ

In terms of “hate speech”, rubber bullets speak better for themselves.

    The projectiles used were demonstrated on TV. They seemed to be large diameter and spongy. Don’t know about the tip.
    
    Nor do I know how they are “fired”.
    
    Nor do I know if the complaints about conditions in the prison are in any way justified.
    
    I just have a sneaking suspicion some baddies have found a way of running rings around the goodies.

      First of all Corrections make no comment, when the story breaks they amend rubber to sponge rounds. Without checking it out, sponge implies air pockets and therefore an element of ‘give’ or softness. Firing something soft is like using a cushion compared to a hammer.

Yesterday, within 10 hours of the libertarian ACT Party demanding it be made compulsory for all New Zealanders to scan in with their smart phones wherever we go, the party announced they had rescinded on their previous support for Chris Liddell’s nomination as Secretary-General of the OECD.

  The problem for ACT is that traditional libertarian views have become manifestly indefensible. The succession of bubbles and financial crises, the need for coherent responses to the pandemic, the growth of intolerance, violence and terrorism under the guise of ‘freedom’ – all these make it essential for ACT to evolve.
  
  But the evolution still has some way to go. At present many of their policy positions are deeply contradictory, so they need to find some way to deal with that … or maybe not? They could just become the Mike Hosking of minor parties, I suppose, barking at every passing car.

    The Hauraki Gulf is Auckland’s toilet. A brief 5 minute shower and half the beaches are closed. Stormwater runoff (without correct filtration) and an overflowing sewer system mean you come out dirtier than you went in.
    
    Imagine the uproar if Bondi was closed due to fecal overflow. In little Aotearoa though no issue – because you can’t blame it on farmers the left don’t want to know.
    
    It’s a shame although quite clearly NZ’s nuclear moment was simply a marketing gimic.

Clever move to jump on the bandwagon of public unease about the Capitol riots which Biden/Harris are already deploying as their own Reichstag moment.

So it has a “history”, but the un-named writer of the TVNZ item apparently couldn’t be fucked in finding out what the hell that may have been. So we remain shocked, hurt and heart broken as Mildred Armah and Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon, in uninformed ignorance rather than understanding a small part of New Zealand history.

What a lot of fucking rewriting is going to be needed when New Zealand history is tough [? taught] in schools as Labour intends. The only hope may be that Labour will fail to deliver on this, as much as anything else they promise

    mikenmildagain, one set of bullock horns among many other sets of bullock horns, in amidst hundreds of items adorning virtually every surface of the pub, hardly constitutes a “display”.
    
    And people should care about the history. Puhoi was settled in the late 1800s by Bohemian settlers, who were lured here by the promise of free Crown land for small farms but had no idea what they were letting themselves in for.
    
    They worked with the local Maori who showed them how to live off the land. They built a church and a school, and kept their traditions alive.
    
    There is a huge amount of unique history in that little village – more people would do well to learn about it.

        The point is not that they are displaying a “racist epithet”; the point is that – like it or not – that was the name of this particular bullock, as far as I can gather. That’s quite simply a FACT. The same as the name of the black labrador retriever belonging to Wing Commander Guy Gibson of the Royal Air Force, and the mascot of No. 617 Squadron.
        
        This is what makes up history. And some things that are now seen as offensive, weren’t necessarily seen as offensive 70 years ago or more. In this particular context, the word is not being used as a racist term or to deliberately cause offence; it was quite simply the name given to a bullock at a time when doing so wasn’t seen as offensive.
        
        I’m genuinely sorry if Mildred Armah is upset by the bullock horns with the name displayed, but I also feel that she is taking it completely out of context. I feel she would do well to take a deep breath and reflect that not EVERY SINGLE THING IN THE ENTIRE WORLD is put there for the sole and deliberate intention of setting out to offend her.

        Fashion applies to history in New Zealand, as much as it does to frocks.
        We can look at bustles, and mini-skirts, and either admire them or scorn them – and then forget about them. We have a passing interest, while acknowledging that they have a place in the history of our society.
        Similarly, a pair of bullock horns which reminds us of the early state of agriculture, much like the old horse drawn ploughs that we used to see rusting away outside public buildings. Likewise the use of Nigger – it was a common name for black dogs & horses, in fat any black animal with no white markings. We had a a couple of generations of sheepdogs so named, as did other farmers in our district. No-one ever commented about it.
        The young woman who wrote this piece needs to study a bit of New Zealand social history -and until then, keep her mouth shut.

  The excuse that’s it passes muster because it’s historical doesn’t cut the mustard.

  In the news item, the lady also said something like, “What sort of people are they attracting?”
  
  Firstly, I very much doubt that ANYBODY visits the Puhoi Pub (or any other pub) purely because of one single, relatively insignificant item on display in the middle of hundreds of other items.
  
  Secondly, I’ve been to the Puhoi Pub numerous times. To answer her question, they attract a complete cross-section of people, from families with little kids and little old white-haired genteel ladies, to farmers and tradies, to large groups of bikies. Again, I very much doubt that any of these people are coming along because of one set of bullock horns, and thereby displaying their racist tendencies – which is what she seems to be implying.
  
  And Yvette, you are right to say it would be great if the TVNZ “reporter” had put just a little more effort in finding out the history. Did the bullock horns come from the early Bohemian settlers, who used teams of bullocks to clear kauri in the late 1800s? Why was this not looked into? Surely history like this is important.

    If there was a toilet seat mounted on the wall of the Puhoi Pub with the words FOR OLD SENILE WHITE MEN ONLY, I’m sure the MSM would be conducting guided tours of the place.
    I’ve been to the Puhoi Pub many times in previous years and enjoyed every moment. Seymore (one of the previous owners) was a legend in his own lifetime. I used to have a book about that pub. F knows where it is now.

  A good friend of mine was suspended by Twitter overnight. He’s a business leader in the town, writes business columns for the local paper, and although he holds firm views, always expresses them in an appropriate manner.
  
  He believes his breaching of Twitter’s rules stems from retweeting a story last week where Canadian researchers had determined that the harm from lockdowns outweighed the benefits by ten to one.
  
  Interestingly, I checked my follower numbers yesterday and today, and this morning there was a difference of around -220, or around 15%.

It’s interesting how he says he has absolutely no support from just about any company. They had to set up their own servers and even email! And he has been blacklisted by every online company that does financial transactions in order to try and shut him down. No Paypal, no Stripe, no credit card services. The only thing he can use is Bitcoin. They’ve also set up Gab video and have their own browser based on Brave that allows users to practically comment on any site on the internet.

An interesting watch.

I remember when

An item on the news perhaps explains why Australia is more experimental with their borders.
Firstly, they have more borders so have more experience.
Secondly, they have something we don’t which is land based borders. This allows them to learn about the pitfalls that they present.
Thirdly, and most importantly, they have States. They do not have a single Government voice in the sense that we do. This leads to constant debate on State actions as well as National direction.
Last night it was a vigourous stating of differing approaches to the covid cases in New South Wales.
Where we have a single approach to covid, the State system means they have much more vigourous debate.

  Hmm, interesting, but what would have happened to the other 85% of those mothers and children if the institutions had not existed at all? It’s easy to be critical with hindsight. Yes, they should have been better taken care of, but when you’re talking about historical orphanages and other homes, they have always had a bad name going back to Dickens, etc.
  
  I remember a report a few years ago by the Irish Govt about the infamous “Magdalene Laundries” (which I know is a different subject) which shows most of those stories were untrue and it makes me wonder about biases and whether people have an axe to grind.
  
  The publication last week of the Irish government’s McAleese Report on the Magdalene laundries has proved kind of awkward for Catholic-bashers. For if McAleese’s thorough, 1,000-page study is to be believed, then it would appear that those laundries were not as evil and foul as they had been depicted over the past decade. Specifically the image of the laundries promoted by the popular, much-lauded film The Magdalene Sisters – which showed them as places where women were stripped, slapped, sexually abused and more – has been called into question by McAleese. This has led even The Irish Times, which never turns down an opportunity to wring its hands over Catholic wickedness, to say: “There is no escaping the fact that the [McAleese] report jars with popular perceptions.”
  
  In the Irish mind, and in the minds of everyone else who has seen or read one of the many films, plays and books about the Magdalene laundries, these were horrific institutions brimming with violence and overseen by sadistic, pervy nuns. Yet the McAleese Report found not a single incident of sexual abuse by a nun in a Magdalene laundry. Not one. Also, the vast majority of its interviewees said they were never physically punished in the laundries. As one woman said, “It has shocked me to read in papers that we were beat and our heads shaved and that we were badly treated by the nuns… I was not touched by any nun and I never saw anyone touched.” The small number of cases of corporal punishment reported to McAleese consisted of the kind of thing that happened in many normal schools in the 1960s, 70s and 80s: being caned on the legs or rapped on the knuckles. The authors of the McAleese Report, having like the rest of us imbibed the popular image of the Magdalene laundries as nun-run concentration camps, seem to have been taken aback by “the number of women who spoke positively about the nuns”.

    Large residential institutions of any denomination ,secular or otherwise will have had similar issues, the western world over . Not justifying abuse , but times were very different and it’s too easy to point the finger. In fact it’s very much the in thing to.
    And recall much of the death , disease etc occurred during the 20’s , 30’s and 40’s which were challenging times for even the richest of countries .

The decision to make the annual celebrations exclusive was due to internal issues at the pā, according to the MP for Te Tai Hauāuru, Adrian Rurawhe.
“There’s lots of different opinions, some people are very upset that we are in this position,” Rurawhe said.

What position?

“Some are feeling embarrassed by the situation we find ourselves in unfortunately, but we are just going to have to work through all of that.”

It may be interesting, in time, to see what precludes the “normal place” of Ratana, whether “political” Ratana is necessary, or ever was.

A sobering article I saw this morning.

The other day an aged FB friend in Yorkshire developed symptoms that one normally associates with a bad cold, but could also be covid-19.
She rang somewhere and the sent a do it yourself test kit and told her where to drop off the swab. A week later and still no result.
She’s dead miserable with nothing but the Telly and the phone for company. The cold is wearing off, but she can’t be sure so nobody visits and they’re in some sort of eternal lockdown over there . . . . .
She’s not very enamored of Boris, at all, and wished she was over here & how marvelous our PM was blah blah. I told her plenty of people here don’t think so.

To November last year, the UK is reporting 85,000 more than expected (based on the previous 5 years). The analysis is quite useful: “On one hand, excess deaths are at their highest since World War Two, while on the other, death rates, once age and size of population are taken into account, are at their worst level for a little over a decade ‘only’… It shows the pandemic has undone the progress made in the last decade or so. That is significant – especially given this has happened despite lockdowns and social-distancing measures to stop the spread of the virus.”

    Probably a bit of both Tall Man. Advances in medicine can help cure ailments or prolong life; advances in obesity undermine that. The way I read the analysis (undone the progress) is that general health had improved, but the effect of the improvements has been lost.

      So that could be construed as keeping the “almost dead” alive for longer which can also have the effect of increasing those at risk to covid or any other widespread illness like a bad case of the flu or a severe stomach bug.

At least several users of the far-right social network Parler appear to be among the horde of rioters that managed to penetrate deep inside the U.S. Capitol building and into areas normally restricted to the public, according to GPS metadata linked to videos posted to the platform the day of the insurrection in Washington.

The data, obtained by a computer hacker through legal means ahead of Parler’s shutdown on Monday, offers a bird’s eye view of its users swarming the Capitol grounds after receiving encouragement from President Trump — and during a violent breach that sent lawmakers and Capitol Hill visitors scrambling amid gunshots and calls for their death. GPS coordinates taken from 618 Parler videos analyzed by Gizmodo has already been sought after by FBI as part of a sweeping nationwide search for potential suspects, at least 20 of whom are already in custody.
