DILBERT (aka (?) Scott Adams) on TRUMP

Flipper was not an ab initio Trump supporter in the sense that I wanted him to win the POTUS race, or thought he would. After Benghazi, and the wicked web of Clinton-Obama lies woven over that debacle, I became an “anyone but Clinton (and Sanders)” person. My personal inclination was to favour Rubio, with Cruz as the next choice. Jeb Bush? No more Bush folk; two, I believed, were enough.

And then slowly, out of the pack emerged Donald J Trump. Why did I like him? Well put aside what he was saying, and why, it was mainly because all the bullshit merchants in the media (in NZ and elsewhere, but especially USA), the Wellington Beltway (including the effete snobs in MFAT), the NZ political class and their flunkies, all described Trump as a fool, and unelectable. Even my good friend Bob Jones described DJT as a buffoon. Most NZ’ers formed their view of Trump from the skewed NZ TV and electronic media coverage. But that was NOT the message I was receiving from friends in the USA – especially those NOT in California and the “Halls of Ivy” States on the east coast.

Gradually I was won over as a total Trump booster. That included wearing, over the objections of the Memsahib, my red MAGA cap donated by good friend and Kiwiblog contributor, Ngaio Les. I came to hope, nay believe (sotto voce), that Trump would beat the smart-arse Clinton. Apart from Benghazi, my main objection to her was to the attempted codification of yet another political dynasty, and the fact that most US MSM and pollsters (even the much vaunted/quoted Nate Silver) predicted her winning easily based on 2016 being “a woman’s turn (3rd time lucky)” and the bullshit glass ceiling.

Anyway, enough of Flipper.

The real point of this post is to share with Kiwiblog the brilliant interview of DILBERT creator, Scott Adams, by Ben Shapiro.

Ngaio Les sent me this link, so Iast night I watched/listened to Scott explain Trump, and why he became Trump supporter, and believed that he would win the POTUS race, as far back as 2015.

The interview runs about 45 minutes so put the link aside for weekend listening. If you favour Trump, you will find so much of what “Dilbert” has to say agreeing with and explaining your position. If you are a never Trumper, listen/watch, consider and learn. “Dilbert” explains all.

Scott Adams details why Trump won, is succeeding, and the rationale behind his approach. It (his message) is not effete academic ( a la Harvard/Princeton) bullshit, but down to earth analysis. Adams deals with so much it is hard to cover all matters here, but just a few examples like hyperbole, lies (everyone – Governments, MPs, the MSM – operating in the political arena). Trump on North Korea? Predicable, but only Trump could have made that much “progress”. Adams says, the “lies” touted by the MSM’s “standard” for Trump, are really technical (on some detail) rather than the fundamental thrust of what is said. And then there is Trump’s visual portrayal, and his use of simple “standard four” language. “Use language for your audience”, says “Dilbert”. ?

All in all, it is highly instructive and a must read for S Bridges, T McLay et al (Ardern and Peters are beyond help), PF ? , and every MFAT policy wonk.

Closed and opaque.

In terms of persuasion the slogan used by the Hillary campaign “Love Trumps Hate” was a disaster for them. People remember the first part of any message, even a very short one. The message might as well have been simply “Love Trump”. The exact opposite of their intended message.

People also remember what they hear often.

In NZ we hear the phrase “open and transparent” repeated frequently. If I were in part of the government I would be very very happy about this. It doesn’t matter that it is generally being said in a negative or derisive context. All most people will here is “open and transparent”. It’s a winner for Labour.

Please stop using this phase and replace with “closed and opaque”.

If this alternative phase takes hold, it will stop being a winner for the government.

“Closed and dark” might also be worth trialing as “opaque” may not be commonly understood (as per trivial).

Just a quick cheers to all who joined me at Kiwiblog’s Annual Christmas Party the other night!

Sorry I was a bit late- I hitched a ride with Nasska (He doesn’t drink you see) but for some reason he seemed a bit dazed and kept getting us lost! Between stopping to change the Pink Floyd tapes on the Hilux stereo and picking up Johnboy it took us bloody hours to get there…(Why did you bring that Livestock Johnboy? Turns out there wasn’t even a nativity scene..)
And after all that someone had parked a bloody Glider in the Carpark!
Anyway…We finally got inside the venue and it turned out that (Rather embarrassingly) the Whale Oil crowd were having their Christmas drinks at the same location- Thankfully neither of them minded so we just carried on.

A few hazy memories of the night-
Upon arrival the place was decorated beautifully- And DPF was dressed as Santa with a drunken blonde helper on his knee. I heard her swearing something like ‘Do I look like a fucking good girl? and realised it was Monique..
Anyway- I felt a bit sorry for a lonely looking bloke standing by himself at a table so after I grabbed my beer I went over. He said “Hello- I’m Hugh, would you like to discuss latest developments in the Auckland Housing Market?”
After escaping I saw an old friend at the bar “Mikenmild! Haven’t seen you all year mate!”
“Oh I’ve just been at The Standard’s do” he smugly replied “They have Vegan Craft Beer, a Transgender Santa Claus and a Clarke and Jacinda Nativity Scene you know…”
Desperately looking for someone with any semblance of normality to drink with I saw Keeping Stock and CMM at a leaner- Unfortunately Notsofast arrived and started banging on something about Ted Bundy being innocent and that he had fresh evidence etc etc..

There was something of a commotion over by the ladies toilets as Maggy was pouring a drink over some creepy looking guy’s head- I’m not sure what it was all about but I heard him yelling something about the ‘Alt Right’ and ‘Honeypots’ as he was bustled out the door..
L,R and C popped in briefly in his ultramarathon running gear, called us all ‘Fat Fucks’ before running off again.
Big Bruv and Flipper started talking Rugby again and ended up in a fistfight…
Hmmokrightitis popped in briefly to show off his trophy blonde, Dime showed up later with several…
I finally found my niche talking Law and Order at the Bar with DG and RF- The rest of the night is a bit of a blur but Nostradamus reckons it was the best Christmas Party yet! (And he remembers ALL of them!)
Apologies to anyone who I have forgotten!

The night ended with some Carols, a telegram from Starboard and a toast to the departed Penny!

This country is really going downhill at a million miles an hour. That pathetic interview with Bush on Larry Williams last night shows why NZ Police are losing respect — Bush was evasive, arrogant, and condescending . . . just another Labour lackey, not dissimilar to Ardern.
What pisses me off is he is Commissioner of Police, and a convicted drunk driver, protecting the Labour appointment of Peters’ unsuitable and vile mate to a senior position.

  Michael Woodhouse was Police Minister when Mike Bush was initially appointed. His second term was approved while Judith Collins was Police Minister.
  In light of the Bruce Hutton fiasco it’s doubtful if he should have been appointed in the first place.
  His current term ends in 2020.

      We had a cheap drone that was only to be used inside as it had a sensor keeping it below the ceiling.
      
      Great fun until a drunken mate took it outside. Went straight up for about 25 yards and then took off heading south towards Wellington. Never to be seen again.

    Sooty: I bought a .22 high powered slug gun for my grandson when he was about 10 to shoot rabbits. It was bloody good, would even knock a possum over at about 50 metres.
    Reckon one would drop a drone no problem, as they will put a hell of a dent in an old water tank and go through roofing iron easily.

DPF: I think you sometimes need better questions

A few days back I got called by a Curia pollster and asked a bunch of one – to – ten rating questions.

One was to ask about how I valued immigration. A very poorly phrased question IMHO.

I think high value immigrants should be encouraged – those that bring skills, build the economy, create businesses, jobs etc: 9.

I think low value immigrants (Manus Islanders and those from much of the third world) that are just a drain on society and destructive to our culture should be discouraged, however I do recognise the need for sanctuary for some genuine refugees (which I suppose should not really be classified as immigration): 2.

The pollster wanted a number, so eventually we split the odds and said 5. ie. An ambivalent response.

I suspect the phrasing of questions like this will often lead to the wrong feedback being gathered.

  As a drone pilot I find this disappointing. These clown are going to spoil it for the rest of us who obey the rules. I have taken mine to Hawaii and Alaska without incident, but I can see drones being banned soon.

    Heavily regulated, certainly. Unfortunate and will somewhat spoil things for responsible drone operators, but we don’t really have much other option. People being able to easily shut down major airports is just unacceptable (and a drone being deliberately flown into an aircraft engine to bring it down is even more unacceptable).
    
    Thinking through possible technical solutions, the best idea I can come up with is require by law that the software of all drones must obey override codes so that authorities can redirect it or ground it if need be. Locations where drones are permanently banned (airports, military bases, etc.) could set up a string of relatively cheap transmitters to constantly broadcast “go away” commands. This wouldn’t stop somebody with sufficient technical skill obviously, but it would make such attacks a lot harder to implement. And would also stop accidental incursions by people who don’t realise the airspace is restricted.

  Manolo – I hope he doesn’t sign the bill. He basically needs to force both parties to confront their stance on immigration. The American people voted for Trump because they believed he would build a wall, constructing a physical barrier between the United States and Mexico, so that America would be able to control immigration and not be inundated by millions of illegal immigrants including many criminals and drug traffickers.
  
  Since then he has been continually stymied by a Republican Congress who has not supported his agenda and while in the majority never voted for border funding.
  
  The bigger picture is that every country needs a secure border and needs to be able to decide who comes in and who doesn’t. As in America so in New Zealand. That’s why people are so upset about the government signing this United Nations global compact on immigration. The danger is we will lose control over who comes in to our country. The people of New Zealand do not think this is at all acceptable.

        Rockape: it all depends on distances to be covered and geography. The physical stone ‘wall’ only existed between parts of East and West where it was feasible. Other methods were used elsewhere, and with more modern technology Trump has many options for his ‘wall’.

    I think a wall makes really good sense. The problem from the Democrats point of view is not that the wall is impractical but they are concerned that the wall would actually work! The Democrats want lots of immigration, both legal and illegal, because they know that 90% of immigrants will vote for them. The Republicans don’t want the wall because their wealthy donors want the cheap labour.
    
    Only Trump is standing up for the real concerns of the American people who do not want illegal immigration.

In 1986 for example the High Court accepted the work of New Zealand academic Paul McHugh on the doctrine of aboriginal title in a decision that eventually led to the 2003 Foreshore and Seabed ruling. This has now morphed through National’s deals with the Maori Party into the disastrous Marine and Coastal Areas Act which is only now beginning to play out as the claims for our entire coastline are processed.

    Bill Shorten, the next Aussie PM. has made serious uncomplimentary comments about our Signing of this UN Agreement with regards to saying they will implement action from Manus and other places to let them into New Zealand.
    In addition he will review the open entry we now have. I know from within Canberra draft legislation is awaiting this relationship.

When will white people realise that they need to harden up, get over feeling guilty about what happened in the 19th century, and demand that we go forward as one nation with one set of laws for everybody?

    Not just ‘white people’. The people paying are: all other immigrants, all part Maori who aren’t affiliated to a tribe, all part Maori who are in a tribe but won’t get much out of any settlements because their tribe never owned much (probably after being colonised and enslaved by other tribes), all part Maori who are in a tribe but don’t have much say or status to decide how investments are made.
    
    Can there really be fairness in treaty settlements when there was so much tribal warfare? How is that fair to the tribes conquered by others?
    
    I used to be reasonably happy that we had the Treaty and could work through claims to try and be fairer to Maori. But it’s getting pretty extreme when the claims never seem to end and are going for entire coastlines.
    
    I’d like to see some decent alternatives suggested by sensible politicians.

  “Yesterday evening, on the last day of Parliament, Winston Peters announced that he had decided to support the United Nations Compact for Migration. National has pledged to overturn this decision.
  
  It has taken weeks of questioning from National for the Government to reveal its position on this agreement, even though Mr Peters was signing off on briefings on it in February and the final text was confirmed in July.
  
  The Government has been extremely secretive about its position and despite having months to decide on it, commissioned legal advice on the compact on the day it was meant to be adopted in Morocco.
  
  Mr Peters has also released a statement claiming that the Government’s legal advice says that the Compact will have no effect on New Zealand law. This is not true.
  
  In spite of the spin from Mr Peters the legal advice clearly bears out the concerns raised by National. It accepts that New Zealand courts have an obligation to interpret our laws with the Compact consistently and by supporting it the Government has also indicated their intention to act consistently with it.
  
  This already happens, for example the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, another non-binding declaration, is already being used to interpret New Zealand law. Mr Peters was right when he said to the media two weeks ago ‘non-binding sometimes means binding’.
  
  We know the benefits migration brings at home and as kiwis travel around the world, however we believe individual countries, not the UN, should set their own immigration policy to meet their own needs. This document seeks to restrict that and that’s why National does not support it and will overturn it.

The question today on where do we begin. Are there coverups or just back scratching on at least three questionable decisions by our Police Commissioner and Peters Party and his selected PM Ardern.
Maybe we should revisit the unusual statement by our Police Commissioner Mike Bush when he set out to shut down some rumours and allegations against Arderns’boy friend.
Next was the highly questionable free pass given to the Gangster and Drug runner Karel Sroubek by Lees-Galloway and a hint that perhaps Ardern knows alot more about the free pass and possible ramifications and who was he supplying drugs to.
Again the free pass given to a future Police Commissioner Wally Haumaha a proven bully boy . Haumahaa buddy boy of Peters and the Peters Party has been exonerated by Ardern. Haumaha against all odds has gotten away with his stand over tactics against some innocent females.In the strange result on the case against Wally Haumaha.
Overall makes one wonder ,what is going on and who is in bed with who. Connecting the dots with who is pulling the strings. A blind man would see in the Haumaha miscarriage of justice that there are more fingerprints from Peters Party on the decision by Ardern than there are in Scotland Yard.

        IKEA’s policy is to match prices to the local market, hence products in Australia are more expensive than in Thailand.
        
        The NZ market is generally higher than Australia so expect their prices to follow suit.

The Furniture will be from many Countries including China. Inter IKEA Systems in turn is owned by a Tax haven charitable Trust, which in turned is controlled by the IKEA founders. In 2017 it gave 40 million Eros to the Dadaab (245,000 pop. 97% muslims) refugee camp in Kenya which is described by the Kenyan Government as a recruiting base for Al-Shabaab. It seem that getting punished (or corrected) is a choice these days.

Here in Christchurch we have a bloke called Benjamin Richard Henderson. 31 years old, kids etc.

He was recently booted of Australia and seems to have fallen on his feet in crim-hugging NZ.

A few months he waved a gun around demanding a car in an armed confrontation. He was arrested two days later and Judge Raoul Neave seems to have set him up with home detention in November.

This week a raid on his place netted drugs worth $345k , $50k in cash and a bunch of firearms.

The authorities seem to have FINALLY put two and two together and figured out he does not fit into society. He’d currently in remand.

How the HELL can someone like that have been given home detention for stand over tactics and threatening with a firearm?

What the fuck are our dud judges playing with here?

There was some woe-is-me yesterday about crime levels increasing in NZ.

Has NZ crime gone up? Definitely.

Crime is not just top-end murder and mayhem. It starts with the low-level offending that erodes the very fabric of society.

When I arrived in NZ in 1992, there was a bit of graffiti in South Auckland and pretty much none elsewhere.

There was also very little littering. People in parks put the rubbish in bins. If the bins got full they took the rubbish home.

Now there’s graffiti everywhere and people don’t even bother to carry their rubbish to the bins.

Delinquent behaviour is not controlled and police cannot, or at least do not, act against low level criminality.

Those low-level offenders feel invincible and above the law and keep ratcheting up the offending. Still no consequences until, finally, some very serious crime and they score a while in prison.

The only way to stop this cycle is to provide much stronger feedback earlier on and that starts with respecting authority from an early age (teachers, cops,…).

    Normal working class Auckland suburb now labelled dangerous and plagued with violence. Woman dropping off charitable gift attacked in broad daylight, gang fights at the local shops, kids attacked walking home at night and now in hospital with a head injury, dairy owner attacked with hammer.. All in the last couple of weeks. And the new 3x 10 story towers of one bedroom social housing yet to be completed which will import more people with problems.
    The problem is the jobs that were stripped from the outer areas by the super city. The problem is that social services and social housing isn’t shared between suburbs but dumped in one suburb. Sentencing varies over time with both govt and public attitudes. Judges try well to get consistency in any given period. The present aim appears to be to keep people out of jail because that certainly creates further hazards.
This fellow is not likely to escape imprisonment and to be a continuing drain on society in future.

      I don’t believe that 46% figure.
      Not because of any political bias on my part, but because all the percentages for the various parties add up to 100% in that poll.
      Everyone knows there’s always a certain percentage of ‘undecided’.
      So either the undecided were ignored or the respondants were forced/tricked into making a spur of the moment decision.
      Furthermore at the actual election about 25% don’t vote.
      Maybe there’s an explanation of the methodology that I need to read.
      
      As an aside someone on twitter the other day repeated some poll questions they’d been asked by Curia that were composed such that the answer was what the client wanted.

So Sroubek has had another whinge from prison that Mark Mitchell is telling porkies about him.

Mitchell however went on Newstalk ZB this morning, and rebutted the claims completely. He said that the full tape was played to Press Gallery journalists, and they were given a transcript. However Sroubek’s ex-wife had asked that only portions of the tape be released, and that is what happened.

Sroubek needs to STFU, do his time, then pack his bags and head back to the Czech Republic to serve his sentence there. In the meantime, the leader of the Most Open and Transparent Government Ever needs to walk her talk, and release the Hardcore text, because this isn’t going to go away.

    Talk about PR – they want to be bigger than NY’s eve itself – as though a supermarket has relevancy with that public holiday! – In just 7 more years they will have conflated Christmas with Easter. Anyway It’ll make the news all day. They’ve just been relisted so I’d assume the decision is based upon trading in a very competitive environment.
    
    I don’t know about supermarkets but Christmas sales figures in retail stores are far harder to predict now than they were just 5yrs ago, and hence everyone is using every technique to move stock than to be stuck with it. There is a fair bit of ‘get this free with this purchase’ or “50% off when you buy…” stickers going out on stuff that’s not moving attached to products that are – revenue then generally increases with crap stock encouraging it.

    That’s a share of just 17.5%, which is easily a new low since these figures were first released by the RBNZ in August 2014.

I see today that former NZRU boss David Moffat has come out and called Ardern a traitor and that she can expect plenty of attacks from his “new conservatives” party. Is this the coalition partner that National needs. I personally would rather see a centre “new green” party that takes votes off Labour and the Greens but would work with National. Is this not simply splitting up the rights vote?. Love to see National go to the right, but understand most of the votes in NZ belong around the middle. I fear this new party may just cannibalize Nationals vote and the right will not actually gain anything?, I could be wrong, hopefully you more learned commentators can explain it better.

    We need the centrist ‘New Green’ party far more, and I know quite a few people who would vote for it with the right messages: pro small local business, anti CGT (think of the people on lifestyle blocks and in home businesses threatened by Cullen). I know middle-aged Greenies who have managed to build up something in their life and don’t want it grabbed by the government to give to inconsiderate breeders.

No. 61: Michael Harris

Michael Harris was jailed for eight years in 2017 after preying on young men staying at a backpackers hostel he managed, but that sentence has now been reduced to five years and four months.

Over a two years period, he drugged, indecently assaulted and filmed hostel guests, most of whom were international travellers.

He pleaded guilty to 42 charges relating to 18 victims, including indecent assault, disabling by stupefaction and making an intimate visual recording.

Some of Harris’ offending occurred when he ran Main Street Lodge between 2012 and 2014.

Young men were given a drink that made them tired and woke up during the night to find Harris pressed up behind them in a “spooning” fashion.

Some recalled Harris telling them he loved them and possible camera lights flashing, while others couldn’t recall any offending.

Harris indecently assaulted a number of other young men, the youngest 15-years-old, in different settings dating back to 2005.

The court considered the most serious offending was that against a young teenager that had required premeditation and misuse of prescription medication. ….

Another slimeball: AFP feared MP was vulnerable to blackmail after trips to ‘seedy neighbourhoods’

The Federal Government is facing its second scandal of the week amid revelations of an MP’s trips to “dangerous” neighbourhoods in South East Asia known for drugs and prostitution. The Herald Sun reports the Australian Federal Police investigated the situation after an intelligence agency noticed the MP was “sending money to multiple accounts overseas”. The investigation found no evidence of criminal conduct, but the AFP reportedly feared the unnamed MP could become a target of blackmail, and Commissioner Andrew Colvin briefed Martin Parkinson, the secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

That reminds me. There was a rumour doing the rounds a few years ago about a (former) Labour MP who allegedly visited certain countries to spend quality time with boys. No name, and all hush-hush, of course!
