Meka Whaitiri is getting counselling, mentoring, coaching and doing a number of courses, including mindfulness. I certainly hope that all this taxpayer funded support is leaving her a wee bit of time to do the actual job she is being well paid for.

I hope she can also find a course that helps her to survive being a very highly paid victim. Actual victims, including hers, should be so lucky.

“In this country, we have a hierarchy; white men, white women, brown men, brown women….” the MP said.

  Surely, for $300k a year or so, you should be fully competent for the job and not need on the job training.
  
  If I turned up at a programming gig and said they’d first need to teach me programming and being vaguely civil to other employees I doubt I’d get the job – let alone a top level “leadership” gig.
  
  But, hey, it’s only taxpayers’ money so who cares…

    Theres one way to stop this sort of shit getting to Parliament.
    
    Every candidate list or seat to:
    
    1. Complete an IQ test.
    2. Undertake the standard psyc testing most employers use for a job including people management skills.
    
    The results to be published along with the candidates usual CV.
    So the voters have the necessary information in order to make an informed decision on who to elect to represent them in the House.
    
    Don’t want to take the tests. Tough shit noddy.

        No, I don’t believe that you can predict the outcome of a FPP election from the results of an MMP election. People behave differently, especially toward minor parties (Greens, ACT, TOP, NZF). I’m not saying that National would not have won an FPP version, just that it you can’t extrapolate easily from the MMP results.

    Why the hatred of Meka? She is one of the most able in Parliament. How many other COLL members have a Masters in Education, been Deputy Secretary of Labour, Treaty Negotiator and 4 years as Chief Exec. of an Iwi Incorporation? She is definitely one of the better ones.
    
    In her cultural context it is not unreasonable for her to feel aggrieved. Her status in her iwi would be very high. Would the PM rate that high among them ? She may not: the perceptions are cultural and very real. If Meka also has mana through tribal ties that adds to her status. A women who was Chief Executive of Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is not and can never be a no-body.
    
    For race harmony going forward in this country we need to learn that the tribal leaders have their own ranking system of who’s who and learn to respect that. It’s costless to recognise someone else is of higher status in another major group but sure lubricates doing business with them as they reciprocate.
    I suspect status issues were the cause of the employment problems. Meka may have been a little touchy about not being responded to “properly” with the cultural deference expected.

      If your analysis is correct – and I tend to think it is – then what we have here is a classic case of hubris: overweening pride before a fall.
      Meka Whaitiri was accustomed to being treated deferentially in the Maori context, because of her status: that is how tribal culture operates, as you have pointed out. I suspect that she allowed, in time, that treatment to kindle her vanity, so that she came to assume a right to similar deference in any context, not just a Maori one. And when someone failed to afford her what she thought she was entitled to, she (literally) threw her considerable weight about.
      Your point about recognising rank is fair enough if, but only if, it relates to what happens on the marae. You may say that it’s costless to acknowledge that status in a broader context, but I say that it would constitute yet another wedge in this society already separated into Maori and ‘the rest’. No thanks.

        My perspective is driven from being a minority working in a Polynesian society. It took a while to get to know that some badly dressed fellow on the street was in line to be future Head of State.
        
        The tribes I fear are getting restless and they have no cohesion so interesting times could be ahead.

  Unfortunately this seems to be where we are at. Our government and our public servants and our leading academics all feel this way. They feel very deeply identity politics and they are convinced that white men are the source of all evil.
  
  And so people who are Maori and particularly Maori woman can claim victim status. This means that they can never be called to account for their actions because they immediately claim that they are victim of the evil racist patriarchal hierarchy.
  
  I would like us to rid our mind of identity politics. Particularly the Christians who have fallen for this idea and incorporated it into their religion. Identity politics is a far left neo-Marxist concept that has no place in Christian thinking.
  
  People should be treated on merit. Justice is supposed to be blind. So whether we are white, brown or any other colour we should be judged as Martin Luther King Jr. once said, by the content of our character, not by the colour of our skin.

      Fair comment SGA. Two points I would make.
      First of all we are all equal in the sight of God and are of equal dignity being made in the image of God. This means that people will go out and serve people in far-off countries. For example one lady from our church left many years ago to go to Vietnam and serve there. It must’ve been hard at first being the only foreigner in a poor country that is often very hot.
      
      But she persisted and now her organisation helps poor villagers with community development, microloans and other initiatives. She also runs 3 orphanages for children who have lost their parents.
      
      On the other hand people are not of equal ability. So for example I went to school with a fellow called Steven Jennings. In the 7th form we were both in the same economics class together. Mister Lusby was our economics teacher. I just passed economics, he probably got an A. He went on to Auckland University and did an economics degree and then went on to postgraduate studies overseas. He then went to Russia and became a billionaire.
      
      As for myself I went to Massey University to do social work degree and then was a social worker with the Department of social welfare earning the princely sum of $12,149 per annum. Steven Jennings was probably making $12,149 per hour!
      
      The moral of the story? Some people are just way brighter than others. And I often ask myself – why the hell didn’t I listen more to Mister Lusby?

        The explanation was neatly put by Immanuel Kant, who said this: in virtue of being human, we are all of equal intrinsic worth, and therefore merit equal consideration; but he also advocated the moral rule of just deserts, whereby we are punished or rewarded according to our behaviour. That’s how we get to justify recognition on the basis of merit.
        So Maori do not deserve any special favours, unless they have first earned them: this is something that many of them, and their political sympathisers, fail to grasp.

        being made in the image of God comes from Genesis 1:27. God made man in his image. The thinking coming out of this would be that we have worth because our creator made us in his image. This provides a foundation for ideas such as human rights for example.
        
        Interestingly enough if you argue that God doesn’t exist and all we are is highly evolved apes and all they are is highly evolved amoeba then the idea of man possessing a certain dignity and worth becomes very problematic?
        
        Our Western civilisation presupposes that mankind has a certain worth and dignity. Which comes from its Christian base I would suggest.

        But the question I would ask you is this. If God is vile and the Bible is evil then where does good come from? Your words presuppose that there is good and there is evil and that some things are vile and presumably some things are good beautiful and true?
        
        How can you determine what is good and what is evil? Because the definition of evil is “taking away from the good”.
        
        If God is good then your words take away from the goodness of God and are therefore evil.
        
        It’s an interesting philosophical problem because you indicate you believe that there is good and there is evil. But your definition of good and evil is completely the reverse of what people would have said over the ages. Generally people would say that God is good and that mankind has a propensity to sin.
        
        You appear to be claiming something different?

        Well, realityczech, here’s one way of looking at it, which may resolve the apparent impasse between you and Scott.
        Let us suppose, firstly, that good and evil equate, respectively, to morally desirable and morally repugnant actions; and that what constitutes morally desirable action is anything that promotes the well-being of other people, or tries to prevent harm coming to them (and moral repugnancy is obviously the opposite). We thus have a simple, secular definition of good and evil.
        Let us next suppose that ‘God’ is not a supreme being (less still an anthropomorphised one), or even any sort of entity that one cares to think of, but is instead a concept – namely, of ideal or infinite goodness. In other words, God is a human creation, necessary to give us some sort of moral compass, and something to aspire to. Then we can see that whether one subscribes to a formal religion, as Scott does, or rejects that, as you do, the difference is perhaps not all that great.
        I take the view that it doesn’t matter a jot what goes on in our heads, as long as we act in the right way, as explained above.

Excellent article by Damien Grant.

Climate change is real and human-caused. We should be taking urgent action to reduce emissions and keep warming to the minimum possible.

But unfortunately these facts are not mutually exclusive with people using climate change as an excuse to promote other agendas. Social justice and environmental responsibility are two entirely independent and unrelated goals. It is very possible that advancing one may have to come at the expense of the other.

Reducing emissions has to be the sole objective. Full stop.

This may be an uncomfortable reality for left-wing political parties, but if there are any ways to reduce emissions that as side-effects increase social inequality, we need to at least consider them. And trying to use climate change as an excuse to advance social justice objectives by stealth is only going to increase resistance to what are already going to be unpopular measures.

  Stop the world, i want to get off. Of course the solar flares have absolutely no effect on our weather. Burn all our rubbish in super heated furnaces like in developed countries, which produce less emissions than than a motorway. I am tired of the Greens stunting development in this country.

    I believe that Climate change is caused by a number of factors, including Solar Flares, Natural Phenomena and Human Activity.
    
    This does make it easy for groups with an agenda to overstate one groups effects in order to advance their own goals.
    
    Case in point, the most environmentally safe method of generating reliable energy is Nuclear Power. If used properly, and well managed, this should be safe.
    
    As to the amount of waste. If all the nuclear waste used in current nuclear reactors in the US was stacked 1 meter in height, it would cover 7 Rugby Fields.
    
    Applying technology to fix the human effects is the key.

    India
    Pakistan
    Egypt
    Nigeria
    Uganda
    All the above countries have huge population which they cannot feed. And they produce nothing the world wants

The in-laws arrived up yesterday to spend New Year here. The ol’ man brought a couple of bottles of his homemade *Egg Nog*, which to be honest I’ve never tried before. It’s so fantastic, I thought I’d share the recipe with the group…..

2ltr French Vanilla ice cream…. [softened]
12 Eggs
750ml Whiskey…. [he drinks Glenfiddich]
1tsp ground Cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground Nutmeg
Pinch of Salt

Put the ice cream, eggs, ground spices & salt into a food-processor and pulse until combined. Slowly add whiskey while continuing to pulse. Then blend on high for about 30secs.
Transfer to glass bottles and keep tightly capped in fridge. Consume at your leisure.

You can use either *Brandy or Rum* if preferred, and the recipe can be scaled-down to suit.
Give it a whirl…..you wont be disappointed 😎

      The super funds have to be seen to have “balanced” portfolios on certain dates–this keeps their actuaries content. The recent gyrations would have changed some ratios. Buying may fix that but on the sidelines are the brokers nerds trying to guess or follow the action down to a millisecond. Value is irrelevant in that “market” it’s all about trying to measure (guess) monetary movements.
      
      NZ gets its whammy too as the index here includes significant stocks traded in the USA. Hence the DOW is a good short term proxy for NZ.
      
      Be sure that economic history will not be mocked. Massive increases in money created by central banks have to be re-homed invariably in asset bubbles fueling speculation. Even worse: savers are being robbed. Two adjustments are underway: (1) savers will be rewarded so interest rates must rise; (2) those who have overindulged on leveraged cheap money need to cover their positions or be sold out. Once those at the top have gone it is only a matter of time for the great unwinding. The GFC is coming to an economy near you.

  NZ retailers might have felt that sales were soft leading up to Christmas but I wonder how Amazon and other offshore sites profited from Kiwis shopping online. Cost and selection are secondary advantages – I enjoyed totally hasslefree shopping. No parking problems, no frazzled shop staff, no queuing, no screaming kids.

      In virtually all non-western cultures the males are incapable of seeing females as equals, nasska.
      From early on, they see their mothers beaten and treated as slaves by their fathers, and they learn by example.
      The women who are tough or lucky enough to survive their brutal treatment, rarely show loyalty to younger women, and want to ensure they have it as hard as they did.
      In any case, non-western cultures do not encourage independent thought to counteract their bad habits.
      That’s not to say there aren’t a lot of kind and gentle people among them, but they rarely get any power to change things.
      It sickens me to think of how so many Maori (and Polynesian and other race) women and children suffer extreme violence and intimidation, yet their supposed leaders say NOTHING about it.

Taranaki iwi call Moriori ‘conquered and subjugated’ in modern-day land battle.

Attempts to hand land back to Moriori of the Chatham Islands are opening up old and painful wounds.

The Taranaki iwi which invaded their home in 1835 say it can’t happen, because Moriori have been conquered and are subjugated.

“I’ve often thought what it must have been like for those families. [What] it would have been to actually have your family ripped apart,” Hokotehi Moriori Trust chair Maui Solomon says.

Moriori lived on Rēkohu – the Chathams – for hundreds of years following a law of peace called Nunuku’s law, which forbade war and killing in any form.

That way of life was shattered in 1835, when a combined force of around 900 – comprising of displaced Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama invaders – arrived from Taranaki in European vessels.
